As Pei Wang averted his gaze, the bright red text temporarily vanished from his view.

He breathed a silent sigh of relief, momentarily putting the system out of his mind. He squatted down and asked Jiang Shu, “Is there anywhere that hurts?”

When Jiang Shu fell, the red text had already obscured his vision. He only noticed someone kicking his shoe, and then Jiang Shu collapsed right in front of him.

There was no way he would deliberately trip Jiang Shu, but what if the system was behind this?

Feeling guilty, Pei Wang said, “It’s my fault; I should have caught you.” He pressed on her ankle gently and whispered, “Did you twist it?”

His soft, warm fingers touched her ankle, causing Jiang Shu to nearly spring up from the ground.

The upbringing of the vicious supporting female character held her back, and Jiang Shu lay stiffly on the floor, uncertain of Pei Wang’s intentions.

Why was he caring for her? To make it easier to slap her in the face later?

Jiang Shu was momentarily confused and decided to go along with Pei Wang, hoping to create more flaws in her act.

As he pressed down on her ankle again, she deliberately groaned, “Ouch, ouch, ouch—”

Pei Wang hurriedly stopped, hesitated for a moment, then lifted Jiang Shu horizontally and placed her on the sofa, asking Mother Jiang, “Where’s the family doctor?”

Mother Jiang, startled by Jiang Shu’s recent cries, stood up and quickly replied, “At the medical center in the community.”

Jiang Shu was taken aback by their reactions.

She nervously thought, is this part of the plan to expose her? Take her to see a doctor, and then the lies will unravel on their own?

But that would be so socially humiliating.

Jiang Shu struggled for a moment on whether to admit she had framed him or let the doctor reveal the truth, and before she could make up her mind, Mother Jiang had already placed the call.

“Hello, is this Doctor Song? Could you please come to Building Thirteen? It seems our young lady has twisted her ankle.”

Doctor Song’s response on the other end of the line was unclear. Mother Jiang glanced at Jiang Shu and asked, “Is it especially painful?”

Jiang Shu quickly shook her head, “No, it doesn’t hurt.”

Pei Wang glanced over hastily before looking away again.

Reminded by his gaze, Jiang Shu recalled her earlier exaggerated groans and had to add, with tears in her eyes, “It hurts more when you press on it.”

Mother Jiang repeated her words to the doctor verbatim, confirmed with a couple of “uh-huhs,” then hung up the phone and turned to Jiang Shu, reassuringly saying, “Doctor Song will be here soon.”

Doctor Song arrived quite quickly. He appeared to be older, carrying a medical kit. He greeted Mother Jiang politely, “Hello.”

He looked at Jiang Shu and asked, “Did you get hurt, young lady?”

Jiang Shu nodded, steeling herself as she pointed to the ankle that Pei Wang had pressed, saying solemnly, “It’s here.”

The time for the vicious supporting female character to be slapped in the face was coming.

Doctor Song nodded, put on a pair of disposable medical gloves, crouched in front of Jiang Shu, and examined her ankle before pinching it lightly, “Is it here?”

Jiang Shu inhaled sharply.

Doctor Song smiled, took off his gloves, and said casually, “It’s nothing severe; the young lady has just twisted a ligament. Ice it for twenty minutes and rest for a few days, and it will be fine.”

He stood up, picked up his medical kit, and told Mother Jiang, “If there are no other issues, I’ll be on my way.”

Doctor Song quickly left the villa, and Mother Jiang went to find the maid for ice packs. Jiang Shu sat awkwardly on the sofa, her fingertips surreptitiously fidgeting with the fabric.

She hadn’t expected such a simple fall to result in a ligament injury. She really is injured now; what about Pei Wang’s demands from the Face-Slapping System?

Jiang Shu turned her head and looked around the room, trying to find Pei Wang, hoping to hear the system’s voice again.

It was strange; since the last time she heard the system’s voice, she hadn’t heard it again. Was there some kind of trigger mechanism?

Huh? Where is Pei Wang?

Pei Wang had gone to see Doctor Song out. He followed the doctor into the yard and took the opportunity to ask, “Is it really not serious?”

Doctor Song smiled and replied slowly, “You have just one precious little girl at home; it’s only natural to be anxious and worried. But that injury, it’s really not a big deal.”

He waved his hand, indicating that Pei Wang didn’t need to see him off, and pushed the yard gate open before leaving.

The gate automatically closed behind him. Pei Wang didn’t return right away; instead, he stayed in place, furrowing his brow.

He wanted to re-establish communication with that “Face-Slapping System” in his mind.

The bright red text he had just seen was so shocking that it made the earlier electronic synthesized voice seem bearable.

There was no option in the system panel to disable the text, so Pei Wang had to temporarily turn off the mute: “Your synthesized voice is quite lovely.”

He conceded, “But I still prefer to hear your voice.”

However, the system remained silent, as if still holding a grudge against Pei Wang for his previous actions and ignoring the olive branch he extended.

Pei Wang waited for a moment but still did not hear the system’s voice. He frowned, then quickly relaxed, turning his gaze towards the flourishing roses in the garden: “If you insist on communicating with me through text, I won’t really mind.”

“You can only make those words appear when Jiang Shu is in my sight.” He spoke softly, “And I won’t recognize the Jiang family, so I won’t see Jiang Shu often.”

“Not recognizing the Jiang family!” The electronic synthesized voice sounded shocked. “Why won’t you return to the Jiang family?”

Pei Wang replied calmly, “Why should I?”

“By recognizing the Jiang family, you will be the indisputable eldest son of the Jiang family; you can inherit Jiang Corporation rightfully.”

Pei Wang didn’t care; as he walked toward the villa entrance, he said slowly, “I have Jinghua.”

Jinghua Company, which he founded while still in school, had grown significantly and had become one of the new aristocrats in the capital.

The electronic synthesized voice lagged a moment, then asked intermittently, “Don’t you want to be with your biological parents?”

Pei Wang shook his head. “I have my own mother.”

When he was young, he got lost and spent a year in an orphanage before being adopted by his foster mother, Pei Songyu. Since then, all his memories of affection and family came from her.

The system grew anxious: “But your biological parents really want to recognize you again.”

“They have another child; it doesn’t matter if they don’t recognize me.” He shook his head, speaking calmly and gently, “But my foster mother only has me.”

The electronic synthesized voice fell silent, never having expected its campaign to encounter such a setback.

After a quiet moment, it lethargically returned to the original topic: “I can communicate with you via voice.”

It looked at Pei Wang and brought up the system panel again, tapping the volume button, growing agitated: “What are you doing?”

Pei Wang gradually lowered the volume to a very low level, then said apologetically, “I’m sorry, but you’re still too loud.”

He pushed open the door and walked into the living room.

Jiang Shu was still sitting on the sofa, while Mother Jiang held a long ice pack, trying hard to wrap it around Jiang Shu’s ankle.

Pei Wang walked over and bent down to ask, “Do you need help?”

The electronic synthesized voice at the minimal volume suddenly chimed in: “Ding! Please expose the vicious supporting female character’s ankle injury disguise immediately.”

Mother Jiang finally managed to secure the ice pack around Jiang Shu’s ankle. She breathed a sigh of relief, stood up from the ground, and waved her hand, saying, “No, no need.”

She looked at Pei Wang and immediately felt guilty: “You’ve been here so long, and I haven’t even shown you what our home looks like.”

Mother Jiang glanced at Jiang Shu and instructed, “You sit here for twenty minutes first. I’ll take Xiao Wang for a walk—”

Pei Wang raised his hand to stop Mother Jiang’s actions, looking down at Jiang Shu sitting on the sofa. He tried hard to ignore the sound of “Ding” that echoed in his mind again and spoke softly, “Thank you for your kindness, but there’s no need to go for a walk.”

He candidly admitted, “I don’t plan to live in the Jiang family in the future.”

Jiang Shu and Mother Jiang almost simultaneously raised their heads, looking at him in astonishment.

Mother Jiang froze for quite a while before nervously asking, “Did Mom do something wrong?” Her hands twisted together, “Tell me, and I can change.”

“I’m already twenty-four,” Pei Wang said with a slight smile, offering a soothing grin to Mother Jiang. “I have my own independent interests, career, and a mother who has been with me for seventeen years.”

He extended his hand toward Mother Jiang.Mother Jiang was taken aback for a moment, then placed her hand on his palm.

Pei Wang held Mother Jiang’s hand and embraced her. He spoke softly, “I know you and Dad have been looking for me for a long time. When I was young, I often wondered what my biological parents were like.”

“When I met you, I thought to myself that you were even better than I had imagined.”

“I love you both very much, and I can come to visit you often.” He released her hand and gently touched the side of Mother Jiang’s neck, saying, “But I already have a mother; I can’t abandon my other mother.”
