Pei Wang was taken aback for a moment.

Jiang Shu couldn’t wait for his immediate reaction and thought he was unwilling.

She pouted her lips, not very pleased, and was about to retract her phone: “If you don’t want to add me, fine, but it’s just that I’m worried you won’t have anyone to collaborate with when you arrange the program script next time—”

“I’ll add you.” Pei Wang pinched the corner of her phone, took out his own phone, scanned the QR Code to add her as a friend, then released his grip and said gently, “All set.”

A notification tone sounded from her phone; Jiang Shu gripped it without even looking at the friend request that popped up and stuffed it into her pocket.

She waved her hand coolly: “Then I’m off.”

Jiang Shu dragged her suitcase out of the basement and headed to the villa entrance.

The driver saw her figure and eagerly got out of the car, opening the trunk to help her place her suitcase inside.

Jiang Shu settled into the back seat, hugging a cushion, and directed, “Don’t go home just yet.”

She pulled up the map, searched the area for a bit, and then found a nearby town that was relatively large.

Jiang Shu held her phone up, pointing to it for the driver to see: “Take me here, I want to buy some things.”

The driver didn’t quite understand but followed Jiang Shu’s instructions to set the navigation and drove towards the town.

Jiang Shu took her phone out of her pocket and opened the WeChat interface.

The friend request was at the top of the page, where Pei Wang had filled in his name in the notes. Jiang Shu accepted the request then hesitated for a moment before clicking on Pei Wang’s profile picture to enter his Moments.

Pei Wang’s profile picture was a white cat with Mandarin duck eyes, its fur long and fluffy, resembling a snowball.

His Moments didn’t have much either; the latest post was from three months ago, with no text, just a picture.

Jiang Shu clicked on that picture.

In it was an elegant-looking woman wearing a dark green qipao, holding a jade green hairpin in her hair, playing with the white cat with Mandarin duck eyes.

She seemed to be Pei Wang’s adoptive mother.

Suddenly, Jiang Shu remembered that Pei Wang had mentioned she was a cellist, and her information could be found online.

She exited Pei Wang’s Moments, entered the browser, tilted her head for a moment, and then typed into the search bar—

Renowned Cellists in the Country.

Many names appeared in the search results, but there was only one with the Pei surname. She clicked on that name’s Baidu encyclopedia entry.

Pei Songyu, an internationally renowned cellist, first performed on stage at the largest opera house in Vienna and has been active in various competitions and performances since then. She studied at Jing City Music Academy and then went to Zagreb Music Academy for further studies, under the tutelage of—

“Miss Jiang,” the driver reminded her. “We’ve arrived at the town.”

Jiang Shu looked up, instinctively responded, turned off her phone screen, opened the car door, and got out, heading into the supermarket in town.

The supermarket wasn’t very large but had a good variety of goods. Jiang Shu wandered around inside, bought some nutritional supplements and fruits, and then carried them as she walked back to the car.The driver wanted to get out and help her with her things, but Jiang Shu shook her head, opened the car door herself, and sat inside. She smiled at the driver, “Uncle Wang, could you please take me to the Small Fishing Village again?”

She waved her phone around, showing the map: “It’s right next to the villa. Did you see it on your way here?”

The driver nodded. He turned the car around and drove towards the sea, but after a moment of silence, he couldn’t hold back any longer and asked curiously, “Miss Jiang, what are you buying these nutritional supplements for?”

Jiang Shu was resting her chin on the window, looking outside. Hearing the driver’s question, she turned her head and smiled at him, “I’m going to visit an old lady and bring her some gifts.”

Pei Wang was picked up by his assistant.

The assistant opened the car door for Pei Wang and conveniently reported, “Meirong Medical sent an email refusing our proposal.”

Jinghua has already become one of the top players in the gaming industry, so there isn’t much room for expansion. Six months ago, he began preparing to diversify the company, with medical technology being one of the areas of focus.

Entering the medical field is not easy; it requires both talent and equipment.

Talent cannot be expedited, and regarding equipment, the precision of domestic instruments falls far short of that abroad. However, foreign companies are often arrogant, and since top-notch equipment is always in short supply, it is rare for them to be willing to sell their instruments to the country.

Meirong is one of the few companies they have recently been in contact with that develops medical equipment.

Pei Wang responded without much surprise, “Have Lin Yuan reach out to the other remaining companies.”

Lin Yuan is his subordinate, tasked with handling the medical side, which he takes responsibility for.

Assistant Song replied affirmatively but hesitated, sneaking a glance in the rearview mirror: “Director Pei, however, there is interest from XX regarding a potential collaboration with us.”

“They even took the initiative to propose providing equipment to us without requiring a prepayment. We can split the profits once our research shows results.”

The medical field often requires a long investment cycle; developing a new drug from research to approval for market release can take several years, and if things do not go well, it can end up as a waste.

Typically, companies without a solid foundation will not venture into the medical field, and XX’s approach can be considered charitable.

Assistant Song tried to maintain a serious demeanor, but his gaze couldn’t help but drift: “Director Pei, do you—”

Pei Wang smiled, “I don’t really pay much attention to this, it’s Lin Yuan’s responsibility. Let him handle it.”

He leaned back in the chair, slightly raised his chin, and looked ahead calmly: “What do you want to ask?”

Pei Wang’s tone was gentle, not indicating any displeasure. Assistant Song perked up his ears: “I just overheard some gossip about you and the Jiang family.”

He curiously asked, “Is it true?”

Pei Wang responded, “It is true.”

Assistant Song pretended to be calm as he adjusted his glasses and probed further: “Have you met the Jiang family’s young lady?”

He casually remarked, “She has appeared once; I heard she’s quite attractive.”

“I have met her,” Pei Wang recalled, then subconsciously smiled slightly, commenting, “She’s rather cute.”

Assistant Song tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

After two years of working with Pei Wang, it was the first time he heard him describe someone in such a tone.

Could it be that Director Pei also has a hidden sister complex? By the way, how old is the Jiang family’s young lady—

“Drive steadily.”

Just as Assistant Song momentarily lost focus, he heard Pei Wang’s cold reprimand, prompting him to quickly regain his attention and follow Pei Wang’s instructions to drop him off outside the hospital where Pei Songyu was staying.

Pei Wang didn’t allow Assistant Song to follow him and went alone into the hospital building.

When he reached the ward, Pei Songyu was resting in her bed. The attendant noticed him arriving, stood up, and quietly said, “She has been asleep for a while. Should I wake her up?”

Pei Wang stopped the attendant: “No need.” He sat down by the bedside, “I’ll keep her company for a bit.”

Pei Songyu had been hospitalized for some time, and he had previously often accompanied her, keeping commonly used supplies here for convenience.

Pei Wang quietly opened the cabinet, took out a laptop, and sat on the sofa by the bed to check the accumulated information from the past few days.

It was the weekend, and he didn’t have many friends in the country, so Pei Wang quickly handled all the information.

He closed the laptop, pushed it slightly forward, and his gaze swept down, catching sight of the trash bin underneath the table.Pei Wang bent down and pulled a paper box out of the trash can.

The attendant saw his action and assumed she had made a mistake in her duties, nervously walking over: “Mr. Pei, is something wrong?”

Pei Wang placed the paper box on the table, looked up at her with a slightly cold expression: “What is this?”

Seeing the paper box Pei Wang was holding, the attendant felt a bit intimidated by his gaze. She fidgeted with her hands, trying to recall, and then explained, “This is the medicine the nurse gave to Miss Pei at noon.”

Her voice lowered a bit as she frowned, saying, “I don’t know what this medicine is; should I go ask the nurse now?”

She turned, preparing to head to the nurse’s station to inquire, but Pei Wang stopped her: “You stay here.”

He picked up the paper box, turned around, and walked out of the ward towards the doctor’s office.

It was around dinner time, and aside from those in surgery, most of the doctors in the inpatient department had gone to the cafeteria, leaving only a young doctor busy in the office.

Pei Wang knocked on the door: “Hello.”

Standing at the doorway, he politely asked, “I’m a family member of the patient in room 1103; may I take a look at the patient’s medical records?”

The young doctor turned his head: “Hello.” He smiled, “Sure.”

This floor consisted entirely of VIP wards, where the patients were mostly wealthy or prominent. Unless it was an unreasonable request, they generally wouldn’t refuse anything else.

The doctor stood up, opened a cabinet beside him, and found the corresponding folder.

He pulled out the folder and was about to hand it to Pei Wang when he noticed a special mark on the cover and hesitated: “Sorry.”

He frowned, troubled: “The patient requested confidentiality regarding her condition from family members—”

Pei Wang stepped into the office: “My mother was previously diagnosed with leukemia.”

He placed the paper box he was holding on the desk: “But I just discovered that the hospital is administering OxyContin to her.”

OxyContin is a powerful painkiller with a certain potential for addiction, typically only used in late-stage cancer patients.

He looked down at the young doctor: “You may not tell the patient that I know about her condition, but I need to have the right to know.”

Pei Wang’s voice softened a bit: “I don’t want to find out about this when it comes to signing a death certificate.”

The doctor fell silent, hesitating as he looked at Pei Wang for a moment, then returned the medical records to the cabinet: “I’ve heard other doctors talk about this patient.”

Because there was only one doctor on night duty, they would inform each other about special cases to prevent any mishaps from going unaddressed.

The young doctor sighed: “It’s leukemia caused by malignant lymphoma.” He looked at Pei Wang: “Do you know about malignant lymphoma?”

It’s a disease that is extremely insidious; by the time it’s discovered, it’s usually at an intermediate to advanced stage, and the cure rate is essentially zero.

Pei Wang remained silent.

He grasped the doorknob, the veins on the back of his hand standing out, and his mind went momentarily blank. Just then, the system, which had been quiet for a long time, suddenly sprang to life.

It seemed to seize a glimmer of hope and quickly, enthusiastically introduced: “Ding! The system mall has exchangeable Universal Cure Pills! Host, please quickly deal with the vicious supporting female character to earn points!”
