Chapter 97: Climbing the Wall

The old servant’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly turned to look at Xiao Yan’s expression. But he seemed unaffected, as if he hadn’t heard, making it hard to guess his thoughts.

“You can go first. I want to have a good chat with the Prince.” Xiao Yan sneered, not even bothering to lift his eyelids.

Prince An was known for his arrogance, and the key to dealing with him was to tear apart his hypocritical facade.

The heavy carved wooden door creaked open, and Xiao Yan walked into the room with a leisurely stride.

The air was thick with a heavy, sticky smell – the pungent sulfur and the sweet, metallic scent of cinnabar mixed together, making one’s stomach turn.

In front of the bronze alchemical furnace, a middle-aged man with a gaunt figure knelt, his black hair hanging messily over his forehead. He looked nothing like a prince.

“What brings you back now?” The man didn’t turn around, his voice hoarse and tinged with resignation.

“Ha… Was the assassination attempt at Yunhua Temple your doing?” The man didn’t approach, standing upright and looking contemptuously at the figure in the Taoist robe.

“You’re here today to lecture me, aren’t you?” Prince An’s tone was flat, his hands still grinding the cinnabar, his voice revealing no emotion.

Xiao Yan’s eyes narrowed, a sharp glint passing through them. “Ha… How dare I lecture Prince An? But you should know that if I could kill Lu Yan’er and abandon the child you had with her, you should know I’m not someone to be trifled with.”

“Xiao Changyu! Have you become this brazen? Did Sun Xiyan teach you nothing about propriety and morality?”

Mentioning Lu Yan’er seemed to have triggered something in Prince An, who finally turned around, his face filled with anger as he glared at his son.

“You have no right to mention my mother’s name. I’m telling you, since you let me live back then, you should have known I’m not a kind person!”

His brow was dark and menacing, showing none of the elegance he once had. Instead, he looked ruthless and merciless, like he did when he was in the Imperial Guard.

Prince An looked at him, and in his eyes, he could see a faint resemblance to himself when he was younger. However, the suppressed hatred in those dark eyes made him shudder.

“Yes, I regret not killing you back then, letting you live until now,” he murmured.

Xiao Yan turned around, as if about to leave the hall, his words dripping with sarcasm. “You’re only realizing this now? Unfortunately… It’s too late.”

He pushed open the door, and the fireworks in the sky exploded with a loud boom, bursting into vibrant colors that filled everyone’s heart with anticipation. His words, accompanied by the fireworks, were hard to hear. “The child you had with Lu Yan’er, guess where I threw him?”

“Ha ha ha… you’ll never guess. Look… guess… in a place you least expect, he’ll be suffering in some corner of Great Ye.”

He turned around, looking at the aging “father” with a cold, sinister smile, like a demon emerging from hell, filled with endless killing intent and madness.

The fireworks illuminated the luxurious mansion, which lacked any festive atmosphere.

It also highlighted the man’s handsome, emotionless face.

Prince An looked at him, his eyes filled with a faint sense of terror.
He… He had always known that he had been searching for Chen’er these years.

“Tell me! Tell me where Chen’er is! Give me back my Chen’er!!!”

The copper jar containing cinnabar was slammed to the ground with force.

Xiao Yan watched him with a cold gaze, his response being the heavy sound of the door slamming shut.

Prince An hadn’t left the alchemy room in a long time. Seeing Xiao Yan storm out, he didn’t care about anything else now; he desperately wanted to know Yunchen’s whereabouts.

He hastily pushed open the door but didn’t see the person’s shadow.

“Where is he?! The unfilial son! Where is that unfilial son?”

An old servant, stooping and stumbling, ran over. “Your Highness, are you looking for the Heir ? He just left.”

“Useless, all of you are useless!” He was filled with anger and kicked the old servant beside him.

Unfortunately, after years of consuming those cinnabar pills, his body had weakened. This kick sent the old servant tumbling to the ground, but he himself stumbled backward and fell onto the cold stone steps.

The old servant ignored his own pain and struggled to get up, checking on Prince An’s condition. “Someone, please! The Prince has fallen!”

This New Year’s Eve would likely be a restless night for the Prince An Mansion.

The capital city had become like a city that never sleeps, with fireworks blooming in the night sky, casting a golden glow over the city. Children stood by the streets, their innocent laughter and gazes filled with joy and wonder as they looked up at the sky.

Adults watched the fireworks, hoping for a smooth and joyful new year.

Xiao Wu drove the carriage, but the festive atmosphere around him didn’t affect him. He was startled when the Heir emerged with a dark face.

He had never seen the Heir so angry. The heir got straight onto the carriage, and Xiao Wu glanced back at the magnificent mansion, wondering what had happened inside tonight.

There was no time to investigate, so he quickly drove the carriage away from the mansion.

As they reached Zhuque Street, he realized that the Heir hadn’t specified their destination.

Should they return to the palace or go back to the mansion?

As the carriage approached the intersection, he couldn’t help but ask, “Heir, should we go to the palace or the mansion?”

There was a long silence after his question.

Xiao Wu felt anxious, unsure of where to go.

After a while, he heard the man’s soft voice, “Go to Prime Minister Pei’s mansion.”

Xiao Wu was shocked. He didn’t know what was wrong with the Heir tonight. Instead of going to the palace or the mansion, he wanted to visit someone else’s residence on New Year’s Eve.

Despite his shock, he had to change direction and head towards the Pei mansion.

Inside the carriage, Xiao Yan leaned against the window, half-closing his eyes.

He could hear the lively atmosphere outside, but it didn’t concern him.

He had no family, no parents to rely on. He didn’t want to go to the palace, which was too luxurious and full of calculations. He also didn’t want to return to the Xiao mansion, which was too quiet.

In the past, he would curl up alone in the mansion, waiting for dawn.

But tonight, he didn’t want to go back.

The plum blossom hairpin in his hand was exquisitely crafted. He would often take it out and stare at it, feeling a sense of relief.

He thought of her again.

Despite her sweet words and hidden intentions, he still wanted to see her.

Xiao Wu didn’t know what his master was up to. Instead of using the front gate, he climbed over the back wall.

He watched in amazement as the Heir jumped over the wall with ease.

Xiao Wu was stunned, unsure of what to do. “Oh my goodness, what’s gotten into the Heir? He’s sneaking around and climbing over someone’s wall in the middle of the night.”
