Chapter 90: Dreaming

In the dimly lit dungeon.

The candles were faint, and various torture devices were scattered around, some still bearing dry, dark red stains. The air was thick with the smell of blood.

In the center, a person who could no longer be called human was bound to a wooden stake.

The damp air was filled with a heavy scent of blood mixed with a musty odor, making one feel nauseous.

The person’s hands and feet had been worn to the point where flesh was no longer visible, and the wounds were deep enough to see bone. Dark red blood dripped slowly from the iron chains, forming a pool of viscous blood on the ground.

The creaking sound of the iron gate being slowly opened echoed through the dungeon.

The figure of a person, thin and frail, walked in slowly, each step heavy and unnerving.

“Tell me… where is the antidote?”

His voice was low and slow, sending shivers down one’s spine in the silent environment.

The flickering candlelight highlighted a bright red mole between his eyebrows.

The person bound to the stake let out a low, hoarse laugh upon hearing this.

“Xiao Huaice, you’ll never get the antidote. You’re delusional!”

The person finally raised their head, revealing an old face with eyes that had rolled back, and their body was covered in festering wounds.

It was clear that the culprit was the person lounging in the carved sandalwood chair.

The man’s narrow eyes narrowed slightly, seemingly amused by the sight, and a sneer formed on his lips.

His pale and slender fingers tapped lightly on the armrest, a gesture that seemed casual but was eerily out of place in this setting.

“Old Man Cheng, I advise you to give up your schemes. Do you think I don’t know the whereabouts of the Gu Poison?”

He sneered cruelly, pulling on the chain and causing the person in front of him immense pain.

The person, already tormented to the point of madness, gasped for breath and said, “Even as a ghost… I won’t spare you.”

“Good, I’ll wait for you to come for me then.”

He slowly inserted the dagger next to him into the person’s heart, ending their life. Only then did he carelessly toss the dagger aside.

Under the candlelight, his face resembled that of a demon from hell, looking eerie and terrifying.

“Take him out and dispose of him.”

His expression remained calm, not like someone who had just killed.

As soon as he finished speaking, two masked black-clothed figures appeared in the room, similar to the one who had reported earlier.

The man walked out of the dungeon, and his eyes were met with the bright moonlight.

The man, who had just been cold and ruthless, lost himself in thought when he saw the moonlight. A rare look of confusion appeared in his eyes.

“Master, the Gu poison will be found soon, and your grand plan will be realized,” his subordinate’s words brought him back to reality. He couldn’t afford to be indecisive.
Finding the Gu Poison was the priority.

Otherwise, everything would be fleeting…

——————

Pei Lingyi had another dream.

She wandered like a ghost in the world where a family had been destroyed. This time, she saw something different.

After her death, the struggle for the throne intensified. Xue Yiran became famous for her poetry, and almost everyone in the capital admired her.

She used her creative ideas to open a business, and it flourished. She seemed to navigate the relationships with men skillfully, but the struggle for the throne didn’t give her much choice.

She wasn’t from this era, and everything in her mind told her that the balance of power between the prime minister and the emperor was crucial. If the prime minister’s power grew too strong, the emperor’s would wane.

Moreover, she seemed to fear herself.

After she revealed her true nature, she fell from grace. Everyone discovered that beneath her benevolent appearance, she was manipulative and ruthless.

She was unwilling to accept this. She had plotted for years to make her family prosper and last.

But everything was ruined by a young daughter of a concubine. Without Pei Lingyi’s knowledge, the girl had grown into a powerful figure, impossible to shake.

Later, she came up with a plan. If Xue Yiran was gone, maybe she could start over. The family would still exist, and she would still be the daughter of the prime minister.

So she hired assassins to kill Xue Yiran. She thought she was lucky when Xue Yiran was saved by the fifth prince.

But unbeknownst to her, the prince had already set a trap, waiting for her to fall into it.

She didn’t know when she met the fifth prince. Over the years, he had become a mastermind, no longer the pitiful figure he once was.

His mother was a princess of the Ancient Moon kingdom, which was conquered by Emperor Jiawu. Though she became a captive, the emperor spared her life due to her beauty.

Ancient Moon was a small country with simple customs, but the royal family practiced sorcery, especially with a secret treasure—a pair of Gu insects.

Legend had it that these insects could cure any poison in the world. However, when Emperor Jiawu conquered Ancient Moon, there was no sign of these insects.

The matter was then dropped.

Xue Yiran seemed to have anticipated that she would seek her life, but before that, she had already subtly revealed her intentions to eliminate the Pei family to the princes.

The act of killing was just a trigger, a catalyst for the removal of the prime minister.

After all, Prime Minister Pei never participated in factional struggles, but he held a high position and had many subordinates in the court.

No one wanted a powerful prime minister, especially one who threatened imperial power.

So, Xue Yiran took advantage of their psychology and used their hands to achieve her goal of eliminating herself and the Pei family.

It happened exactly as she had hoped.

She eliminated herself, and the Pei family was destroyed in one fell swoop, adding an ominous atmosphere to the capital’s situation.

Xue Yiran rose to prominence overnight, and she thought those men were deeply in love with her.
But was it really so?

She was entangled in a beautiful dream, unsure of how to choose her beloved.

The crown prince was gentle and refined, like jade.

The third prince was elegant and refined, supporting all her ideas.

The fourth prince was charming and romantic, with a unique charm.

The fifth prince was fierce and cold, but all his tenderness was reserved for her alone…

Who should she choose?

But Pei Lingyi thought she was incredibly foolish.

After the fall of the prime minister’s mansion, she realized that she had never truly understood the members of the Great Ye royal family.
There was no deep love or romance; there was only utilization.

They made Xue Yiran a beloved figure in the capital, admired by all, and she became lost in their sweet words.

The fifth prince had obtained the Gu Insect from Ancient Moon and had long controlled Emperor Jiawu.

But Emperor Jiawu, a lifetime of war, would hardly be content to be a puppet.

Xiao Yan was his final move.

Author’s note – The author thought about it for a long time and decided to change it to a multiple male lead story.
