Chapter 79: Returning to the Capital

Xie Chengjun didn’t send him back to the Prince’s Mansion.

In the capital city of Shangjing, everyone knew that Xiao Yan had been granted permission by the emperor at the age of 16 to have a mansion built in the expensive area, with specifications comparable to those of the princes’ residences. It was as if he was treated like a prince.

The extent of his favor was jaw-dropping, which was also the reason why the noble young masters in the capital dared not provoke him.

Although it was unknown why he was at odds with his biological father, his paternal grandmother was the current empress dowager, and his paternal uncle was the current emperor. Whether or not Prince An cared about him was not that important.

After all, Prince An had been obsessed with alchemy and immortality for years and had long since stopped paying attention to worldly affairs. It was likely that since the death of Princess An, the once-grand Prince An Mansion had fallen into disrepair.

The carriage stopped in front of a majestic mansion, with towering vermilion gates and a golden plaque hanging above the door, inscribed with the characters “Xiao Mansion” in a bold and powerful calligraphy, which seemed to match his personality perfectly.

Following the principle of seeing someone off to their doorstep, Xie Chengjun lightly knocked on the door. After a while, an old man in green appeared behind the door. Seeing Xie Chengjun’s unfamiliar face but sensing his extraordinary aura, the old man asked respectfully, “May I know who this Lord is?”

Xie Chengjun replied, “I am a commander of the military department. Today, your Heir was attacked in the plum forest of Yunhua Temple. Fortunately, I happened to be there. He was alone and unarmed, and now he’s severely injured. I brought him back especially.”

As soon as Xie Chengjun finished speaking, the old man’s face turned pale, and he swayed, almost unable to stand.

Xie Chengjun quickly supported him. “Old Uncle, are you alright?”

The old man held onto the doorframe, composed himself, and asked tremblingly, “Where is the Heir? Is his injury serious?”

“Don’t worry, I’ve stopped the bleeding. He’s not in danger, but he needs to see a doctor as soon as possible,” Xie Chengjun reassured him.

Hearing that Xiao Yan was not in mortal danger, Old Geng finally felt relieved and shouted, “Xiao Wu, go fetch a doctor quickly! The Heir is injured!”

Soon, a young servant around 14 or 15 years old rushed out in a panic. “The Heir is injured? I’ll go get a doctor right away!”

Xie Chengjun found it strange that this vast mansion seemed to have only these two servants.

He thought for a moment and decided to let the matter drop. After all, he wasn’t interested in Xiao Yan, and he didn’t want to take credit for saving him. Now that he had safely delivered the person to the mansion, the matter was considered closed.

“Heir Xiao is currently in the carriage, which belongs to the Prime Minister’s daughter. Now that we’ve delivered him, this matter is settled,” he said.

Old Geng’s heart was tied to Xiao Yan, and when he learned that he was in the carriage, he quickly went to check on him. At first glance, he was moved to tears, exclaiming, “Oh, my poor Heir! How could you be injured like this?”

The man’s face was pale, and he was lying in the carriage, unconscious and covered in blood, which was heartbreaking.

Old Geng didn’t dare to move him carelessly and turned to Xie Chengjun, preparing to kneel. “Lord, could you please help me carry the Heir back to the mansion? This old servant is too weak, and I have no one to rely on except for Xiao Wu, the young servant. I…I have no other choice.”

Xie Chengjun hadn’t expected his guess to be true – the Xiao Mansion was indeed only maintained by this old servant and the young boy. He raised his hand to stop Old Geng from kneeling and said softly, “What are you doing, old Uncle? Since I’ve brought Heir Xiao here, I’ll naturally help him out.”

With that, Xie Chengjun lifted Xiao Yan onto his back and entered the magnificent Xiao Mansion.

The scenery inside the mansion was as he had imagined. He had visited the third prince’s mansion before, and it was similar to this one. It seemed that the rumors were true – the emperor indeed treated his nephew like a son.

However, the mansion wasn’t as empty as Old Geng had claimed. There were indeed maidservants and servants present.

Old Geng noticed Xie Chengjun’s puzzled expression and quickly explained, “These servants are just doing miscellaneous tasks. You know, someone has to do the daily chores. But the Heir is precious, and they can’t touch him.”

This explanation only deepened Xie Chengjun’s confusion. However, he wasn’t interested in investigating the secrets of the Xiao Mansion. He didn’t know Xiao Yan well, and if it weren’t for Jiaojiao, he wouldn’t have gotten involved in the first place.

After laying the man down, Old Geng thanked him profusely. “Thank you, Lord, for your help. When the young master wakes up, I’ll make sure to tell him about what happened today.” Old Geng then prepared to kneel again.

Xie Chengjun frowned, disliking the elaborate etiquette, especially from an elderly person. He helped Old Geng up and said, “Enough, today’s events were just a natural response. You don’t need to be so formal, Old Uncle. If it weren’t for the Miss from the Prime Minister’s mansion accompanying your Heir, he might not have made it through today. You should thank her properly when he wakes up.”

“I have something to attend to, so I’ll take my leave now,” Xie Chengjun said, and with that, he quickly departed, leaving Old Geng no chance to say anything else.

Old Geng could only stare blankly at the man’s departing figure. When he turned around, he saw the handsome man lying on the bed, still unconscious.

Old Geng walked over to Xiao Yan, his cloudy eyes filled with tears. “If the late princess knew you were suffering so much, her heart would ache to death.”

“Is the Prince really so heartless?” Old Geng muttered a few more words before taking his place beside Xiao Yan.

Time flew by like a white colt passing through a gap. After a heavy snowfall, the once-majestic and luxurious capital city was now completely covered in silver, with crimson and snow white complementing each other in perfect harmony.

The usually cold and stern city gate was bustling with activity today, as many people braved the chill to join in the excitement.

“What’s going on today? Why is it so lively?” someone asked, standing by the side of the street, curious about the commotion.

“You don’t know? Today’s the day General Wei Yuan returns to the capital after completing his mission. He’s quite famous for his military achievements. A few years ago, he was sent to guard the border, and now that the border is stable, the emperor has specially allowed him to return home for the New Year,” someone explained.

“Oh, that makes sense. I knew something was up today,” the person said, gazing into the crowd.

Their eyes landed on a figure standing out in the center of the crowd, drawing the attention of many young women.
“Is that person also under General Wei Yuan’s command? He looks so young,” they wondered.

Following their gaze, they saw a man riding a white horse, its coat gleaming in the sunlight. The rider, probably in his early twenties, wore silver armor and a white robe, with a sword at his waist and a crimson cape fluttering in the wind like clouds. He exuded an aura of confidence and pride.

Many young women blushed at the sight of him, throwing various items like sachets, handkerchiefs, and perfumed pouches towards him.

The image of a young warrior on horseback, dressed in fine attire and exuding a sense of pride and power, was truly captivating.

Author’s note – OK, finally managed to write about Big Brother.
P.S.: I’m really in the mood to write something spicy (wondering who will be the lucky one).
