Chapter 77: Departure

Xie Chengjun struggled to suppress his jealousy and walked slowly behind the woman, saying softly, “Heir Xiao is seriously injured, Jiaojiao. Don’t worry about him for now. I’ll take care of everything here.”

He leaned forward slightly, speaking in a low, magnetic voice that was almost hypnotic, his warm breath brushing against her earlobe.

Pei Lingyi’s slender white hands paused for a moment before she replied, “Okay, thank you, Brother Xie.”

As she finished speaking, she was about to put down the handkerchief. However, a large hand covered in blood suddenly grasped her slender fingers, refusing to let go.
The voice was hoarse, “Don’t go…”

Xiao Yan was severely injured, his face pale, and his eyes were half-closed, as if he might collapse at any moment. Yet, his grip on Pei Lingyi’s hands was firm, refusing to let go.

Xie Chengjun was almost amused by Xiao Yan’s behavior. How could the usually strong and capable commander of the Imperial Guard act so pitifully, just to gain sympathy from the woman in front of him?

Pei Lingyi leaned forward at this moment, and since she had just wiped him clean, the two were extremely close. He had grabbed her hands without warning, and she hadn’t reacted in time.

As she looked at his face, she could clearly observe his features. His eyelashes were black and thick, each one distinct, and they trembled slightly, like the wings of a butterfly, conveying a sense of desolation and fragility that evoked pity.

The elegant girl seemed a bit flustered, lowering her eyes and standing still, but no one knew that she felt a secret joy in her heart.

In the past, his haughty gaze, filled with disdain and arrogance, had made her feel like she was plunged into an icy cave, and every time she dreamed of that moment, she would wake up with a start, drenched in cold sweat.

But now, he was kneeling on the ground, begging for her mercy.
Soon… she would make him beg for her love.

Xie Chengjun seemed to have finally reached his limit. He stepped forward, prying open Xiao Yan’s hand, and turned to Pei Lingyi, saying, “He’s a bit delirious from the injury. Don’t think too much of it. Let Luoxu and the others take you back. I’ll take care of Heir Xiao.”

As he spoke, he supported Xiao Yan, not minding that his clothes were stained with blood. Xiao Yan seemed to realize that he was being pulled up from the ground forcefully. Without the woman’s gentleness, and since he was already struggling to stay conscious, he relaxed and leaned his head against Xie Chengjun’s shoulder.

The man didn’t say a word, but his expression showed slight disdain. Pei Lingyi saw that Xiao Yan had fainted and quickly stepped forward to check on him.
“Brother Xie, he’s seriously injured. I’m a bit worried… After all, he’s my rescuer.”

Xie Chengjun immediately composed himself and coughed lightly. “Don’t worry, Jiaojiao. He’s only suffered some flesh wounds. They look scary, but they didn’t damage his tendons or bones. With some rest, he’ll be fine. You don’t understand the resilience of those who practice martial arts, so don’t worry.”

Xie Chengjun spoke reassuringly, his face showing no strain, looking reliable and trustworthy, as if to prevent the girl from saying anything about taking care of the injured man herself.

Seeing this, Pei Lingyi couldn’t say much and could only watch as the two of them walked further away.

A guard beside her spoke up, “Miss, don’t worry. We’ve taken care of the assassins here. Lord Xie will take Heir Xiao back to the temple for treatment. Once his condition stabilizes, we’ll head back to the capital.”

“It seems there’s nothing we can do but wait…” she murmured, her beautiful eyes filled with uncontrollable worry.

Afterward, some of the guards brought by Xie Chengjun stayed behind to clean up the aftermath, while others accompanied the guards from the mansion to escort Pei Lingyi back to her carriage.

All they could do now was wait for news from Xie Chengjun’s side.

She had barely been back in the carriage for an hour when Xie Chengjun returned. He knocked on the window and said, “Jiaojiao, it’s me.”

Pei Lingyi lifted the curtain, revealing her elegant face. She bit her lip unconsciously and asked softly, “Brother Xie… how is Heir Xiao? If anything happens to him, I’ll feel guilty.”

The girl’s eyes were slightly lowered, her gaze rippling like water, and her fingers were nervously gripping the curtain. Her eyebrows were furrowed, and she looked sorrowful.

Unfortunately, her concern was misplaced. Xie Chengjun had just stopped Xiao Yan’s bleeding and had rushed over to reassure her, to prevent her from worrying and blaming herself.

He knew her well.
After such a big incident, she must have been shaken, especially since she hadn’t seen so much blood before.

“Don’t worry, the temple’s facilities are simple, but I’ve stopped the bleeding for now. He’s out of danger, but we need to hurry back to the capital to find a doctor for further treatment.”

Hearing this, the girl finally seemed to relax a bit, her brow smoothing out slightly.

The man continued, “However, his injuries are too severe, and he can’t ride a horse. I’ll have to put him in your carriage. What do you think?”

In reality, when Xie Chengjun said this, he was extremely reluctant. But sometimes it’s better to get things over with quickly. Jiaojiao was kind-hearted and would feel sorry for even a beggar on the street.

Now that she considered Xiao Yan her rescuer, if she wasn’t allowed to do something for him, she would only feel more guilty and increase her sense of obligation towards Xiao Yan.

Since Xiao Yan was unconscious and unaware of his surroundings, even if he had held the girl’s hands tightly earlier, he was now powerless to do anything.
Sharing a carriage wasn’t a big deal, and it might help alleviate some of the girl’s guilt.

If Xiao Yan tried to repay his gratitude in the future, Xie Chengjun would naturally help the girl repay her debt. But for now, the girl was taking care of him, which was also a way of fulfilling his wish. After all, they were implicated in the incident because of him, and the assassins had targeted him.

Even if the two of them would be in close contact.

But under the current circumstances, there was no other way.

The girl was taken aback for a moment before quickly nodding in agreement. “Brother Xie, since Heir Xiao is seriously injured, it’s natural that he can’t ride a horse. Fortunately, our carriage is spacious enough to accommodate him.”

“If that’s the case, I’ll go prepare everything. We’ll set off for the capital soon.”

The appearance of assassins in the temple, with their target being the noble Heir, had brought unexpected trouble to the Yunhua Temple.

So when Xie Chengjun supported the severely injured Xiao Yan for treatment, the abbot and the entire temple spared no effort in providing assistance, offering whatever they could. Unfortunately, Xiao Yan’s injuries weren’t something that could be cured with ordinary ointments.

Under the watchful eyes of the Yunhua Temple’s monks, Xiao Yan was lifted onto the carriage. The group set off with great fanfare, hoping that he would recover without any further complications.
