Chapter 74: The King of Hell

“They… they’re all here to kill you?” Pei Lingyi’s voice was weak, a far cry from her previous bravado.

Xiao Yan gazed at the woman in his arms. Her veil had been lost in the chaos, revealing a porcelain-like complexion and eyes that seemed to hold a misty allure. For a moment, he was captivated by her beauty.

It was said that the Eldest Miss of the Pei family had an ethereal beauty, with eyes that seemed to contain a gentle, smoky quality that was rare among the women of the capital. He realized that her ancestry from the south might have contributed to the softness in her voice.

Now, seeing her up close, he couldn’t deny that she had a face that was both lovely and expressive.

Even though the woman in his arms was someone he had once despised, he couldn’t help but notice her beauty.

However, this wasn’t the time for distractions.

He spoke in a husky voice, “These people are after me. When I engage them, you’ll make a run for it.”

“Okay,” she replied, her voice small but resolute.

Xiao Yan was taken aback by her quick agreement. “You’re quite eager to save your skin, aren’t you, Miss Pei?” he said, his tone laced with sarcasm.

“Given what you’ve said, Heir, do you expect a weak woman like me to do anything else?” she retorted, her eyes fixed on the masked killers surrounding them, each wielding a long sword.

Xiao Yan had come to the temple alone, without even a sword, let alone guards. Pei Lingyi doubted he could take on these trained assassins alone, no matter how skilled he was in martial arts.

She poked him in the waist and whispered in his ear, “You don’t have a sword. If I manage to escape, I’ll come back to collect your body.”

If the situation weren’t so dire, Xiao Yan would have liked to gag her. He couldn’t believe people in the capital praised her for being gentle and submissive. She was clearly a troublemaker who took advantage of situations.

He felt like those who sang her praises must have been blinded.

Those who praised her for being gentle should go get their eyes treated.

“Hehe… Thank you, Miss Pei,” he said, his lips twitching slightly, his teeth clenched in annoyance at the woman in his arms.

The two of them stood up, and Xiao Yan shielded Pei Lingyi behind him, his eyes cold and piercing like a hawk’s, scanning the surrounding masked assassins.

The previous arrow had clearly been an ambush, and these people had known his whereabouts all along, anticipating that he would be alone at the Yunhua Temple today.

His eyes narrowed, and a fleeting glimmer of killing intent flashed in his pupils. Despite being surrounded by so many people, he showed no fear, only a hint of bloodlust.

“Tell me, who sent you?” he demanded.

The assassins, seeing that their initial arrow had missed its mark, jumped out in unison but didn’t rush forward immediately. Instead, they observed silently, noting that Xiao Yan was unarmed.

In response to his question, the leader of the group, a black-clad figure, spoke in a hoarse voice, “Your Highness, there’s no need to know the details. You only need to know that this plum forest will be your final resting place today.”

After confirming that Xiao Yan had no backup and was unarmed, the leader gave a signal. Instantly, all the assassins drew their weapons, revealing their murderous intent as they charged towards the pair.

It would be a lie to say Pei Lingyi wasn’t afraid.

But desperate times called for desperate measures. Since Xiao Yan had survived in her dream, she was prepared to face her fears.

The assassins’ attacks were swift and deadly, each strike aimed at vital points. With many opponents and the need to protect the woman behind him, Xiao Yan could only dodge and weave to avoid their blows.

Pei Lingyi could only follow the man’s movements, dodging the incoming attacks. Fortunately, her slender figure and Xiao Yan’s protection in front of her meant she wasn’t injured.

Suddenly, an assassin launched a surprise attack from the side, aiming directly for the man’s waist.

“Be careful!” Pei Lingyi caught sight of this and exclaimed in alarm, her breathing quickening.

These people were skilled, and there were many of them, making it difficult to find an opportunity to escape.

Just in time, Pei Lingyi’s warning allowed Xiao Yan to react. His eyes flashed with cold intent, and he spun around, pulling out a dagger from his waist and thrusting it straight into the assassin’s chest.

The sound of the dagger piercing flesh was unmistakable.

Fresh blood splattered out, and the man suddenly raised his eyes, filled with a fierce and murderous intent.

A few drops of blood landed on his refined face, accentuating his handsome features and making him look like a malevolent spirit from the Underworld.

No wonder he was known as the King of Hell in the Imperial Guard. In this moment, he didn’t resemble a noble young master at all but rather a demon from the underworld.

The assassin who had been about to attack seemed to have never expected Xiao Yan to be carrying a dagger.
His exposed eyes were filled with disbelief.

Xiao Yan seemed unsatisfied, pushing the dagger deeper into the man’s body, making him endure the pain of the blade.

The surrounding assassins, clearly intimidated by him, retreated several meters back upon seeing the dagger.

The blade, now stained with blood, was pulled out, and Xiao Yan’s gaze turned cold and menacing as he looked at the assassins like they were already dead.

“This Xiao Yan is not easy to deal with,” one of the masked figures said in a hushed tone, “but he is alone and only has one dagger. We were careless earlier. If we are cautious, we can definitely kill him here.”

The masked figure’s voice was low, but his slightly trembling hands betrayed his inner anxiety.

Xiao Yan didn’t bother with them anymore. Instead, he turned to look at the woman behind him, his voice low and urgent, “Aren’t you leaving? Do you really want to die here with me?”

He was filled with an aura of death, making people shiver with fear.
This was the real him.
Pei Lingyi looked at him and finally understood why he was able to kill his enemy with his own hands at the age of ten.

Just as she thought this, she didn’t hesitate to take advantage of the situation. Since he had spoken, staying would only drag him down. It was better to run out and fetch reinforcements.

However, the assassin wasn’t foolish. Although he didn’t know Pei Lingyi’s identity, he could tell from her extraordinary clothing and demeanor that she was of high status. If she escaped and brought back guards, the situation would escalate.

“Go, intercept that woman!” the black-clad leader ordered.
Two assassins rushed towards Pei Lingyi.

Xiao Yan’s eyes flashed, and with a swift motion, he sent hidden daggers flying towards the two assassins, striking them accurately. Fresh blood stained their shoulders, and they fell to the ground.

“Who gave you the courage to dare to make a move in front of me?” he said, his eyes narrowing slightly. His black eyes were devoid of temperature, and the killing intent surrounding him was palpable, making people’s scalps numb.
