Chapter 60: Finding the Cat

The moon was bright, and the stars were sparse. The withered leaves crunched underfoot, emitting a crisp sound. In the distance, the mountains seemed to fade in and out of view under the moonlight, as if veiled in a thin layer of mist, serene and ethereal.

From tonight on, she would occupy a place in the heart of the noble Crown Prince, and no one could replace her.

With such an outcome, Pei Lingyi was quite satisfied.
On the way back, the air smelled sweet.

Luoxu noticed Pei Lingyi’s good mood and felt relieved. Everything had gone according to plan, surprisingly smoothly.

But thinking about the County Lord’s attitude on the way back, Luo Xu couldn’t help but feel worried, “Miss, what do you think about the County Lord’s attitude just now?”

Pei Lingyi thought about Changle’s hesitant behavior on the way and found it amusing, “Although she didn’t know my entire plan tonight, she followed my hint and spoke accordingly. She must have known that Li Miaozhu wanted to trap me but ended up being trapped herself.”

“Will the County Lord be sad about this?”

Luoxu was worried that the County Lord might feel disappointed in her if she knew that Miss Pei wasn’t as innocent and harmless as she seemed. After all, Miss Pei had been her only close friend since childhood, and the County Lord was of noble status. If today’s events made her unhappy, it would be a pity.

She looked at Luoxu and lightly tapped her head with her fingers, smiling, “You really think Changle is a naive and innocent young lady who knows nothing about the world?”

“Isn’t she?” Luoxu was puzzled.
The County Lord had always been straightforward and never hid her thoughts, making her a refreshingly candid person.

“You see, you’ve been with me since childhood, and you still can’t see through Changle. She’s much more complex than you think.” Pei Lingyi’s eyes sparkled, and she glanced at Luoxu with a playful smile, making it hard to tell whether her eyes or the stars were brighter.

“Do you think Changle looks innocent?”

Luoxu nodded, didn’t she?

But then she heard the girl’s voice, long and melodious, like a sigh, “In the imperial family, who can be truly innocent? Changle may seem simple, but there are things she doesn’t say, not because she’s unaware, but because she’s perceptive and chooses not to.”

“The Eldest Princess only has one daughter; naturally, she wouldn’t harm her. Today’s events are just a small matter compared to the intrigue in the palace. If she really taught Changle to be a naive and harmless girl, that would be harming her…”

So that’s how it was.
Luoxu had been following Pei Lingyi since childhood and thought she was good at judging people, but it turned out she was still blind to the truth.

Tonight, Pei Lingyi was in an exceptionally good mood. Everything had gone according to her plan without a single hitch. However, Xiao Yan’s actions had caught her attention.

Whether he acted out of a sense of justice or kindness, tonight was a good start.

They had disliked each other for a long time, and he had no reason to stand up for her tonight, yet he did. When a man shows mercy to a woman, the outcome is often losing control of the situation.

Xiao Changyu, I’m really looking forward to that day…

Although he was clearly angry tonight, so what? She wasn’t going to indulge him. Just because he showed kindness didn’t mean she had to accept it.

Men are all the same, especially those like him who are arrogant and haven’t experienced hardship. Pei Lingyi wouldn’t indulge him.

She wanted to break his pride with her own hands, to make him beg for mercy at her feet. The thought of such a scene was incredibly amusing.

Four years ago, he looked at her with disgust. Four years later, she wanted him to be unable to attain his desire for her.

That would satisfy her anger.

With this thought, her mind became much clearer. Perhaps it was because she had won so overwhelmingly tonight that she had such ideas.

Just as Pei Lingyi was about to return to her courtyard, she suddenly heard a faint sound around her.

“Meow…”

“Did you hear that sound, Luoxu?” Pei Lingyi wasn’t sure if she was imagining things, but she thought she heard a cat meowing.

Luoxu listened carefully, but all she heard was the rustling of the wind through the leaves.
There were no other sounds.

“Did you hear something strange, Miss? I didn’t hear anything.”

“No, I’m sure there was a sound.” Pei Lingyi was adamant.
She wouldn’t mistake it. Perhaps it was because she had raised cats for so long that she was particularly sensitive to their meows.

Now that she thought about it, she couldn’t help but think of Snow Ball.

Luoxu saw her miss’s serious expression and listened carefully again. It seemed like there really was a sound. Before she could say anything, Pei Lingyi walked towards the bushes in the distance.

They had just dealt with that scandal, and it was already late at night. They would be heading back to the capital tomorrow. Seeing that they were close to Huachun Hall, she didn’t expect her mistress to go and investigate the source of the sound.

Luoxu had no choice but to follow.

Pei Lingyi took the glass palace lantern from Luoxu and searched deeper into the flower bushes. The closer she got, the louder the sound became.

“Miss, please be careful. The grass is thick and uneven here. Don’t trip over anything.”

Luoxu was anxious behind her. Since Pei Lingyi had taken the lantern from her, and there was a row of reeds planted here with no path, it would have been better to let her go alone.

But her miss was determined, walking straight into the overgrown reeds.

Pei Lingyi carefully held the lantern, searching through the grass. She didn’t know why, but hearing that sound made her think of Snow Ball, and she felt extremely anxious. It was late at night, and she had to make sure whether it was Snow Ball or not to feel at ease.

“Kitty, please meow again. I can’t find you…” Pei Lingyi was on edge. The cat’s meow was faint and intermittent, making her worry.

It seemed like the woman’s voice had an effect, because there was a rustling sound from the grass, followed by a “meow.”

Pei Lingyi held the lantern and followed the sound. When she parted the grass, she saw a snow-white cat lying there, seemingly lifeless.

“Snow Ball! What’s wrong with you? Don’t scare me.” The usually composed woman looked frantic. She didn’t know why the cat, which should have been in the courtyard, was lying here, half-dead.

Xiao Huaice felt like he was spinning, and suddenly he was enveloped in a warm embrace, filled with the same dreamy and light fragrance from that day.

Was it her?

Just as he had a flash of consciousness, he fainted due to excessive injury.

Pei Lingyi held Snow Ball, walking through the reeds. Her white dress was stained with the cat’s blood, but she didn’t care. All she could think about was saving the cat in her arms.
