Chapter 46: Fleeing in Disarray

In her dream, Xue Yiran became famous after impressing everyone with her performance in the Flying Flower Order.

Later, she wrote a farewell poem that made her a renowned talented woman among the young generation in the capital.
After that, whenever there was a poetry gathering, everyone wanted her to participate and write poems.

Her reputation as the most talented woman in the Ye Dynasty spread far and wide, and everyone knew her name.
Even three-year-old children could recite her poems, and if they didn’t memorize them, they would be punished by their teachers.

Xue Yiran became a leader among the young generation, and even the great Confucian scholars praised her, saying that she was unparalleled in the past and would be hard to match in the future.

From then on, the noble ladies in the capital were divided into different levels.
Xue Yiran was in a different category from other noble ladies.
Pei Lingyi watched the girl who was pretending to observe the flowers and trees in the courtyard, and she smiled coldly to herself, but her face didn’t show any expression.

Pei Sitang walked over and whispered, “Sister, I think I’ve seen the poem that the Third Miss Xue wrote in the Flying Flower Order before.”

Pei Lingyi pretended to be surprised, “Tangyang, you can’t say that without evidence. The Third Miss Xue wrote that poem with her own ability. If you don’t have proof, you can’t spread rumors.”

The girl’s voice was soft and gentle, and her words seemed sincere, as if she was really worried about wronging a good person.
However, Pei Sitang didn’t think so.

Her sister was too kind and gentle, which is why she always got bullied by people who didn’t know better. She was sure that Xue Yiran didn’t write that poem herself.
Pei Sitang paced back and forth, trying to remember where she had seen the poem before.

Suddenly, she had an idea and quickly went to grab
Pei Lingyi’s arm, whispering something in her ear. The girl seemed to disagree, but she couldn’t resist her sister’s persistence. After being told a few things, she let Pei Sitang go.

Pei Sitang went to see the examiners and spoke sincerely, saying that she wanted to give up the competition. The examiners refused, advising her to focus and prepare for the farewell poem.

However, despite her young age, Pei Sitang’s words were well-reasoned, and she insisted that she had important business to attend to and couldn’t participate in the final competition.

The situation became awkward, and it was Mister Zhou who finally spoke up, “Pei Family’s Second Miss, are you sure you want to give up the final competition?”

The old man’s expression was serious, and his eyes seemed to see right through her. But Pei Sitang stood her ground, her voice firm, “Mister Zhou, please let me go. I voluntarily give up my qualification for the gathering.”

Originally, she was excited to participate in the gathering with her sister, but if someone was going to take the top prize unfairly, then participating would be pointless.

Looking at the girl’s determined expression, the old man sighed and said, “Alright, alright. You young people have your own minds. If you’re determined to leave, we can’t stop you. You can go.”
“Thank you, honorable examiners,” Pei Sitang said, bowing to them before hurrying out of the courtyard.

The incident didn’t attract much attention, except for Pei Lingyi, who watched Pei Sitang leave and smiled.
“Tangtang, don’t let sister down…”

The girl in pink strolled leisurely in the courtyard, seemingly observing the flowers and plants. However, upon closer inspection, it was clear that she wasn’t paying much attention. Her eyes, which were as soft as water, showed no emotion.

It was time to end this farce. Instead of wasting her energy on writing poetry, she might as well think about how Li Miaozhu would deal with her today. No matter what, her poem wouldn’t be appreciated by everyone today.

Pei Lingyi found a pavilion to sit in, looking calm and composed. However, she attracted some attention, and to her surprise, the person who approached her was Xiao Yan.
“Is Heir Xiao here to pick a fight?” The girl’s voice was gentle, and even such a question sounded like an unintentional pout.

If it were an ordinary person, they would think nothing of it. But what about Xiao Changyu? Was he an ordinary person?

The man stood under the corridor, and the bamboo shadows cast a mottled pattern on his clothes, giving him a halo of light and shadow, like a handsome gentleman stepping out of a painting.

However, as soon as he spoke, he ruined the beauty of the scene, “Hmm… who are you trying to impress with your act? I’m afraid your dream of winning the top prize is going to shatter today. That Third Miss Xue’s poem was really good, and you can’t compare to her.”

He admitted that he couldn’t match the girl’s literary talent and thought, and he only came here to remind her not to waste her time on impossible things.

Pei Lingyi looked at the man who came to “lecture” her and couldn’t help but smile. He seemed to enjoy rubbing salt in wounds.
The woman was originally sitting calmly in the pavilion, but since the man was so “concerned” about her, she decided to thank him properly.

Xiao Yan was originally standing at a distance from the woman, separated by a railing. But to his surprise, the girl suddenly leaned forward, her eyes filled with tender emotion, staring straight at him.

Her gaze was so intense that it seemed like he was the only person in her world. Her slender and delicate fingers seemed about to reach out to him.
“What… what are you doing?” The man’s voice, which had been tinged with sarcasm, became flustered, and he leaned backward.

It seemed like he was scared, and the earlobe hidden in his hair turned slightly red. His refined eyebrows showed a mixture of disgust and other emotions that were hard to define.

The culprit, however, laughed without remorse. “Why are you reacting like this, Your Highness? I was just trying to brush off a leaf that fell on your shoulder. You look like a monster that’s eaten someone.”

Before the man could react, Pei Lingyi quickly plucked off the leaf and held it up in front of Xiao Yan’s eyes, her expression innocent, as if to say, “Look, I was just trying to remove the leaf for you.”

“You… you’re not only scheming, but also shameless. I don’t want to talk to you.”
Xiao Yan finished speaking and quickly walked out of the corridor. Compared to his usual calm and composed demeanor, his pace was a bit faster today, and it seemed like he was fleeing in embarrassment.

Pei Lingyi couldn’t help but laugh out loud when she saw his reaction. What had she been thinking in the past?
Why was she afraid of Xiao Yan?

The Heir was actually quite pure and innocent.
The man’s reaction today greatly amused Pei Lingyi, and her already good mood became even better.

Just then, a commotion came from a distance.
The girl in the pavilion adjusted her clothes and regained her usual composure.

It was time to go and enjoy the show.
She had been waiting for this day for a long time.
