Chapter 4: Passing through a Book

Pei Lingyi slept soundly, perhaps because she had finally found a solution to her problems, and she didn’t have any more terrifying nightmares.
“Jiaojiao, Jiaojiao, don’t scare your mother!”
A woman’s voice came from outside the room.
Even with Pei Lingyi’s good sleep, she was woken up by the noise. The door creaked open, and then there was a rustling sound.

“Jiaojiao, did you have a bad dream last night? I specifically asked someone to invite Doctor Hu to come and take a look at you.”
The person who came in was wearing a deep purple dress with a treasure-patterned design, a water-green ribbon around her waist, and a woman’s hairstyle with a gold hairpin. She looked gentle and elegant, and it was hard to believe she was the mother of two children.
“Mother? Why did you come?”
Pei Lingyi didn’t expect her mother to invite a doctor, and she couldn’t help but laugh.

Madam Pei looked at her daughter with concern in her eyes, “You said you didn’t sleep well last night, and you should have asked for leave from grandmother’s place this morning. You slept through lunch, and as your mother, I couldn’t help but worry.”
Pei Lingyi said helplessly, “Mother, I’m really fine. I just took a nap and I’m much better now. There’s no need to invite a doctor.”

Madam Pei said firmly, “No way, you’ve been weak since you were young, and I’ve taken care of you every day. Now that you’re doing well, I won’t let you take any risks. You have to listen to me.”
Although Madam Pei looked gentle, she was still the mistress of the household and wouldn’t be swayed easily. Even though Pei Lingyi was capable of making her own decisions, she didn’t dare disobey her mother’s wishes.
“Fine, fine. Let the doctor come in.”

With that, Madam Pei showed a satisfied expression and called out to the door, “Layan!”
After a while, the renowned Doctor Hu nodded and said to Madam Pei, “Madam, don’t worry. It’s just the changing of the seasons, and the weather is unpredictable. Miss is just a bit weak. I’ll go downstairs and prescribe some nourishing medicine for her.”
Pei Lingyi hugged Madam Pei’s arm and said coquettishly, “I told you, I’m fine.”
After giving Layan a glance, the two of them went downstairs. Then, Luoxu brought over a bowl of porridge, “Miss just woke up and must be hungry. This porridge was specially made by Madam for you.”

“Really? I knew mother loves me.”
Pei Lingyi drank the porridge, showing a rare display of girlish charm.
Madam Pei looked at her daughter, who had grown into a beautiful and elegant young woman, and felt both heartache and pride.
She felt heartache because her daughter had been weak and sickly since birth, and although she had improved over time, she was still not as healthy as others.

As her mother, she naturally felt concerned.
“Alright, I just came to see you and know that you’re fine. And…I know you have a clever mind, even more so than men. Don’t worry, I’ll fully support you in whatever you want to do.”
Pei Lingyi felt a warmth in her heart and leaned into her mother’s embrace, “Mother, I know you’re talking about what happened at grandmother’s place this morning. Don’t worry, I have everything under control.”

“I’ll make sure the Pei family remains one of the most prominent families in the capital city.” She didn’t say this out loud, but she not only wanted to prevent the events in her dream from happening but also to make the Pei family stand firm and unshakeable.
Madam Pei hugged her daughter, and she felt that the most fortunate thing in her life was having such a pair of children.

The mother and daughter sat in silence, but the warmth of their relationship flowed between them.
…
“Who…who are you?”

Xue Yiran couldn’t understand what was happening. She had just submitted her resignation letter and was looking forward to a wonderful vacation, but she had a stroke of bad luck. As soon as she stepped out the door, she was hit by a car, and when she woke up again, she saw a group of maids in ancient costumes standing around her.
Seeing their mistress’s reaction, the maids exchanged nervous glances, and one of them whispered, “Since the miss is awake, I’ll go inform the concubine.”

Xue Yiran was still in a daze, and when she heard their conversation, she wondered if they were talking about her.
Xue Yiran’s personal maid, Xiaotao, stepped forward and said, “Miss, you fell into the water yesterday. Does your head still hurt this morning? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere else?”
“Wait, wait, you all can go now. I want to be alone for a while.”
The maids looked at each other uncertainly but eventually obeyed her words.
After the door was closed, Xue Yiran felt a sigh of relief.
Outside the door stood three maids, one of whom was Xiaotao, who had spoken earlier. The other two maids were from the madam’s side and had an air of arrogance about them.

“Now that the third miss is awake, we’ll go back and report to the madam.”
Watching the two maids leave, Xiaotao looked uncertainly at the closed door and eventually sighed.
Inside the room, Xue Yiran had calmed down. She couldn’t believe that such an unfortunate thing had happened to her.

She was a 21st-century working professional who had just started her job, but she was bullied by her boss. In a fit of anger, she went to the top floor to submit her resignation letter. As soon as she stepped out the door, she was hit by a car.
Yes, after the maids left, she realized that she had memories that didn’t belong to her.
These memories belonged to the body she was now in.
The person whose body she occupied was also named Xue Yiran, and she was the third daughter of the Minister of Revenue.

From the memories, she knew that she was in a dynasty called Great Ye.
The emperor’s title was Jia Wu, and Great Ye had a rival country called Great Ning to the north. The environment in Great Ning was not as favorable as in Great Ye, and the two countries had been competing with each other for years without breaking out into large-scale wars.
The people were living relatively peaceful lives, and she was currently in the capital city of Great Ye, known as Shangjing.

Just as Xue Yiran was trying to understand her situation, the door suddenly opened. A woman with a charming aura and a gentle face came in, and as soon as she saw her daughter lying on the bed, tears welled up in her eyes.
“Oh, my poor daughter, how did you end up in such a miserable situation, falling into the water on such a cold day? Waaah…”

Xue Yiran felt a bit embarrassed. As expected, this was the original owner’s biological mother, Concubine Dan. Now that she had become Xue Yiran of Great Ye, it was best not to make any mistakes.
After falling into the water two days ago, Xue Yiran had been running a high fever and now her face was pale, making her look pitiful. She spoke in a hoarse voice, “Concubine, I’m fine now. My head just hurts, and that’s why my brain is a bit muddled.”

Concubine Dan held a handkerchief and couldn’t stop crying, “Waaah, I was so scared when I heard that you didn’t recognize the maids. I was afraid that you might have some problems.”
Chunlu, the maid who had gone to report the news after Xue Yiran woke up, was mentioned.
“Third Miss, I heard you woke up, so I came to visit.”

A voice came from the door, and the woman who entered was dressed in luxurious clothes and had a noble aura. Before Xue Yiran could recall who this person was, Concubine Dan had already bowed and said, “Why did Madam come? This trouble is too much for Madam.”
This was the mistress of the household.
Although Liu Shao was dressed luxuriously, the sharpness in her eyes couldn’t be ignored. Compared to her, Concubine Dan seemed more rustic.

“Sister Dan, Third Miss’s fall into the water this time is somehow related to our daughter Hua. I brought some tonics to show my concern.”
Although she apologized, her tone wasn’t sincere at all.
Concubine Dan knelt on the ground, trembling, “Thank you, Madam. This time, Third Miss’s fall was just a childish prank. We’re overwhelmed by Madam’s kindness in bringing so many tonics.”
Liu Shao smiled, “Concubine Dan is indeed a person who knows her place.”

“Let’s leave the things here. We won’t disturb your mother-daughter talk anymore.”
As the people put down the things, the room, which had been a bit empty, suddenly became crowded.
Only after the room was finally empty did Concubine Dan burst into tears, “Waaah, I’m useless. I couldn’t even get justice for you.”

Xue Yiran, still trying to process the memories, instinctively patted Concubine Dan’s back, “It’s okay, Concubine. I’m fine.”
…

After sending Concubine Dan away, Xue Yiran closed her eyes for a while to gather her thoughts. She finally understood everything.
The woman who came earlier was Liu Shao, the mistress of the Xue household. The real Xue Yiran had died on the day she fell into the water, and the person who pushed her was Xue Baohua, the eldest daughter of the Xue household and Liu Shao’s biological daughter.

That’s why Liu Shao, who held power, didn’t apologize sincerely, and Xue Baohua, who had committed such a vicious act, was only reprimanded slightly.
The real Xue Yiran had already been killed by her.

There was a dull ache in her chest, and Xue Yiran’s sense of injustice still lingered. Now that she had taken over someone else’s body, she naturally wanted to help her get justice.

Wait, Xue Baohua!

Xue Yiran suddenly remembered that she had read a novel before, and the supporting female character was none other than Xue Baohua!
She remembered this because there was a cannon fodder character with the same name as her, who was the younger sister of the supporting female character.
It had been a long time, so she couldn’t recall it immediately.
This discovery excited her, because knowing that she had transmigrated into a novel and knowing the plot would be better than knowing nothing.

“Don’t worry, I will definitely help you get revenge.”
Xue Yiran placed her hand on her chest, and indeed, the original owner’s sense of injustice was slowly dissipating.
