Chapter 31: The Little Marquis

The autumn wind was chilly, stinging her face.
After running for what felt like an eternity, Xue Yiran finally stopped to catch her breath when she saw that no one was following her.
Sweat beaded on her pale forehead as she lay on the grass, feeling utterly unladylike. As she thought about her experiences these past few days, she suddenly burst into tears.
She cried loudly, as if trying to vent all her grievances.

“Weren’t you just so capable? Why are you hiding here alone, crying?”
A playful voice came from nowhere, making Xue Yiran sit up in panic, her tears still fresh on her face.
“Who are you?” Xue Yiran’s voice was still heavy with sobs.

She looked around, but couldn’t see anyone.
“You’re quite interesting. I’ve never met a woman like you who dares to provoke Li Miaozhu. Aren’t you afraid she’ll cause trouble for you in the future?”
Shen Xun, holding a folding fan, jumped down from a rockery, looking youthful and energetic.
Xue Yiran wiped away her tears and stood up, her eyes wary of the newcomer.

“Who are you? Did you see what happened just now?”
Shen Xun had a baby face, with fair skin and big, round eyes that were amber-colored, like a cat’s. His hair was tied up, with a few stray strands falling onto his forehead.
Despite his harmless appearance, Xue Yiran didn’t dare trust him.

“Don’t be afraid. I just happened to pass by and witnessed your heroic act. I’m quite impressed,” Shen Xun said with a smile, revealing his tiger-like teeth.
“Since you dare to provoke Li Miaozhu and her gang, I admire your courage. I wonder if you have an ally. I recently found a jade plaque with a chrysanthemum pattern. Maybe it matches yours?”

Hearing about the chrysanthemum jade plaque, Xue Yiran’s expression softened slightly, but her tone was still cautious.
“Are you telling the truth? You’re not deceiving me, are you?”
“Why would I deceive you? The jade plaque is here. If you don’t believe me, take a look.”

Shen Xun tossed the jade plaque into the air, seemingly unconcerned about losing it. Xue Yiran caught it and her eyes lit up when she saw the lifelike chrysanthemum pattern. It was indeed real.
It seemed that every cloud had a silver lining.

Xue Yiran’s grievances were instantly forgotten. “May I know your name, Young Master? I’m the Third Miss of the Xue family, and I also found a chrysanthemum jade plaque. If you don’t have an ally yet, we can form an alliance.”

Seeing her smile after tears, Shen Xun was even more interested in her and didn’t hide his identity. “I’m Shen Xun from the Changping Marquis’ mansion.”
Changping Marquis’ mansion?

Xue Yiran searched her memory for a long time, but she couldn’t recall any important plot points about this mansion in the original novel.
It didn’t matter; the original novel had a vast worldview, and it was normal to forget one or two details.

Shen Xun looked young, even younger than her. If he were in the modern world, he’d be a cute high school student. “Young Master Shen, are you really willing to form an alliance with me?” Xue Yiran looked at him seriously, making Shen Xun feel a bit uneasy.

“Of course, I’ve always disliked those noble ladies who bully others. I saw your bravery when you stood up to them, and I admire you. Don’t worry, I’ve given you my jade plaque. Would I be so untrustworthy?”

He tilted his head slightly, his big, round eyes sparkling with innocence. His soft tone made anyone who doubted him seem like they’d committed a great crime.

Xue Yiran, being a mature woman in her late twenties, couldn’t resist Shen Xun’s charming behavior. She was won over by his adorable appearance and sweet demeanor.
“Alright, Young Master Shen. Since you trust me so much, I won’t disappoint you. Don’t worry, we’ll definitely win the first prize in the Gentlemen’s Gathering.”

Xue Yiran’s eyes burned with determination as she thought about being humiliated earlier. She was determined to make Li Miaozhu and Xue Baohua pay for what they did.
Shen Xun’s face still looked innocent and pure, but he was secretly excited.

“Ha ha ha… This is going to be fun. An illegitimate daughter dares to aim for the top prize in the Gentlemen’s Gathering? This is getting more and more interesting.”
Meanwhile, Pei Lingyi and Xiao Yan walked into the hall, finding that many participants were packing up and leaving, looking disappointed.

Those who hadn’t passed the first round would be embarrassed to return to their families.
When they entered the hall, they saw many people chatting and standing around. Some of them were also male-female pairs like them.
Just then, two more people entered the hall – Xue Yiran and Shen Xun.

As soon as Xue Yiran appeared, many people glared at her, including Li Miaozhu and her gang, who had just formed a feud with her.

In the grand hall, Xue Yiran couldn’t do anything about the glares, but she didn’t dare to react.
Some people didn’t look angry, but rather curious. It was indeed surprising that Little Marquis Shen, the most notorious playboy in the capital, had formed an alliance with a woman.

Pei Lingyi glanced at the two and understood that it seemed the heavens were on her side. She didn’t need to do anything, and someone would protect her.
If Xiao Huaifeng was known as the capital’s most notorious rogue, then Shen Xun was known as the capital’s most notorious playboy. The Shen family had been founding heroes, but they had declined in recent years. However, their noble title remained, and they were still prominent in the capital’s nobility.

Unfortunately, the Shen family’s younger generation had suffered many tragedies, with some dying and others going mad. The entire Shen family was left with only one legitimate grandson to inherit the title.

Shen Xun was only 16 when he inherited the title and was known as the Little Marquis.
However, he didn’t care about his responsibilities and spent his days indulging in all sorts of vices, except for womanizing. He was known for his love of eating, drinking, and gambling.

Despite his playboy image, Shen Xun had ambitions to seize the inheritance.
He wasn’t a true playboy.

Pei Lingyi felt a chill run down her spine as she looked at Shen Xun’s innocent face.
No one knew what kind of beast was hiding beneath that pure exterior.

As if sensing Pei Lingyi’s gaze, Shen Xun scanned the crowd and caught sight of her beautiful face.

He smiled at her, looking harmless.
Pei Lingyi pretended to look away, and the chill in her heart gradually dissipated.

He’s a madman…
