With quiet hope for reconciliation flickering in her chest, Xu Fangting almost thought she had misheard. Across the table, Chen Zheng sat steadily, his demeanor calm and indifferent. There was no hint of apology or intent to make amends. She struggled to speak, her voice trembling slightly. “Don’t you have anything else you want to say to me?”

It had already been some time since she had moved out. Throughout that entire period, Chen Zheng had never once tried to contact her. Xu Fangting had originally assumed they were in the midst of a cold war, both stubbornly refusing to be the first to back down.

However, today made her realize something far more painful. Her husband had never been engaging in a silent standoff with her. He simply did not care that she had left.

When she confronted him, Chen Zheng merely curled his lips. “What else is there to say?”

“You!” Xu Fangting’s hands balled into fists, crumpling the hem of her dress into a mass of wrinkles. “After everything you’ve done, you don’t feel even the slightest bit guilty toward me?”

The scandalous nature of his actions was so humiliating that even voicing them felt disgraceful. Yet Chen Zheng, the very man who committed them, seemed completely unbothered. Shouldn’t he at least apologize? Shouldn’t he try to make things right?

Chen Zheng simply responded, “What do I have to be sorry for?”

Staring into her stunned eyes, he continued in a tone of casual justification. “Isn’t it completely normal for a man to have a few flings outside? All these years, have I not fulfilled my responsibilities as a husband? Did I ever let one of those women take your place?”

Such things were far too common in his affluent social circle. As long as a man had money, none of them went without a few lovers. “You should have been mentally prepared for this when you married me. I’m still your husband. That fact hasn’t changed.” His voice carried a sense of arrogance, as if remaining her husband was some kind of magnanimous gesture.

In his mind, Xu Fangting had already received far more than Liu Ruoya. Just the official status of wife was enough to make countless women envious. Liu Ruoya had tried again and again with sweet words and flirty antics to climb into that position. Yet it was Xu Fangting who sat solidly in the seat of the legitimate wife. What more could she possibly demand?

“Duties?!” Xu Fangting’s expression contorted. “To you, living with me was nothing more than fulfilling the basic responsibilities of a husband?”

Chen Zheng frowned, his tone sharpening. “Stop making a scene.”

Xu Fangting could no longer bear to stay. She stood abruptly, turned, and made to leave.

Just as she turned, the door opened and Liu Ruoya stepped inside. Their eyes met, and Xu Fangting’s fury reignited.

Liu Ruoya still dressed the same way as always. Her seductive appearance, highlighted by a sheer lace dress, was paired with a coy bite of her lip. She murmured sweetly, “Sister-in-law.”

To a casual observer, her greeting might have sounded innocuous. However, Xu Fangting saw it clearly. There was a flash of provocation glinting in her eyes.

Her anger erupted. Chen Zheng had come to speak with her and had brought this woman along. Did he see her as already dead?

Without thinking, Xu Fangting grabbed the untouched cup of black coffee from the table and threw it straight at Chen Zheng’s face.

Liu Ruoya shrieked as if the coffee had hit her instead. She lifted her skirt and rushed over, hurrying to Chen Zheng’s side to help him wipe his face.

Chen Zheng remained still. His eyes locked on Xu Fangting, blazing with fury.

Still far from satisfied, Xu Fangting seized a half-finished drink from a nearby customer’s table. Liu Ruoya had taken out a small tissue and was doting over Chen Zheng, gently wiping the coffee from him while whispering softly. Xu Fangting had no interest in hearing her sweet words. With a swift motion, she hurled the entire glass.

“Ah!” Liu Ruoya screamed. Sticky, steaming chocolate splashed across her face. The cup struck her head and tangled in her hair. Her makeup immediately smeared. At nearly forty years old, the smudged foundation revealed fine lines that makeup usually concealed.

She darted behind Chen Zheng, appearing wronged and fragile. “Sister-in-law, this is too much.” She spoke as if Xu Fangting were an irrational woman. Unfortunately, her ruined appearance stripped her of any air of elegance. The impact of her pitiful act diminished significantly.

Xu Fangting had seen enough of the shameless pair. She turned on her heel and left. Yet even after unleashing all that fury, her heart still felt stifled and unsettled.

Once she was out of sight, Liu Ruoya tearfully clung to Chen Zheng’s soaked sleeve. “Even if she treats me like this, how could she do that to you? Why can’t we all just sit down and talk?”

Chen Zheng wiped his face with a swift gesture, then turned sharply to glare at her. “Didn’t I tell you to wait in the car?”

Liu Ruoya had not expected to be reprimanded so suddenly. Why else had she come down? Although Chen Zheng had told her this meeting was for business, she knew exactly what he was really doing. Given her past, she had no illusions. He had clearly come to meet Xu Fangting. Determined to assert herself, she had insisted on tagging along, hoping to show her face and make her presence known.

She never expected Xu Fangting to act like a madwoman, throwing drinks in public. It was completely disgraceful.

With wide, innocent eyes, she tried to defend herself. “It was my mistake. I thought you were meeting someone for work. I waited in the car for a long time, but I needed to use the restroom, so I came down. I had no idea I’d run into Sister-in-law.”

Her voice trembled with regret, as though the entire situation had been a tragic accident. However, Chen Zheng no longer seemed interested in comforting her. He turned away without a word and walked off.

Liu Ruoya, flustered, continued to wipe her face as she hurried to follow. “Zheng, wait for me!”

Back at the apartment, Xu Fangting returned to find that Luo Jing and Chen Xin were still out at school and work. She kicked off her newly bought high heels and suddenly felt a rush of heat fill her eyes. Turning quickly, she walked straight into her room.

At school, Luo Jing found herself wondering how Xu Fangting was doing. Had she managed to reconcile with Uncle Chen?

If they had patched things up, then Xu Fangting would probably move out soon. The thought of being alone in the apartment again brought an unexpected sense of loneliness. Luo Jing had become used to the way Xu Fangting talked about dramas while she cooked. Without that familiar voice, the silence would be jarring. She sighed at the thought.

Still, if Auntie could be happy again, that would be something worth celebrating.

Trying to stay hopeful, Luo Jing rushed home after class to check on the situation. Her final class ended late today, and by the time she left, it was already dark. She still needed to pick up groceries, and that would make preparing dinner a little more rushed.

When she returned with her shopping, the lights in the apartment were still off. She assumed Xu Fangting had not come back yet, so she went directly to the kitchen to begin cooking.

By the time it was nine o’clock, Chen Xin would be home soon. Luo Jing set the dishes on the table, but something felt off. If Xu Fangting were not coming home for dinner, she would have called. Why had she not sent any message?

Just as she reached for her phone to call, it rang first. Her older sister was calling.

Luo Jing answered.

On the other end, Luo Han’s voice sounded anxious. It was clear she had only just managed to find a free moment. Her voice was low and rushed. “Luo Jing, could you start staying with Mom at night starting tomorrow? I won’t be able to visit for the next two weeks.”

Luo Jing had no time to ask what had happened before another woman’s cold voice suddenly cut in. “Who are you talking to?”

“It’s my sister. Luo Jing, hang on a second.” Then she heard Luo Han turning away, launching into a long explanation with the woman beside her.
