There was no doubt that today’s events had left Luo Jing shaken. Fortunately, Chen Xin happened to be free and came to pick her up. She remembered how the little one had been pouting that morning, and now that something so upsetting had occurred, she knew she had to comfort her properly.

On her way over, Chen Xin had already thought through how she would coax her. However, the moment Luo Jing got into the car, she immediately leaned into her, curling up as though seeking protection and comfort.

Chen Xin gently patted her on the shoulder as Luo Jing buried her face into her chest, seeking comfort and reassurance. Although she could not see her expression, she could clearly see the exposed portion of her pale neck.

Luo Jing’s fair and tender neck had always been one of Chen Xin’s favorite features. It was often where she liked to leave little hickeys. But today, something else marred that spot.

There were marks from strangling and signs of broken skin. A sharp medicinal scent lingered around the ointment that had been applied. Dried blood had already started to crust along the edges.

Chen Xin’s face grew cold. She pulled Luo Jing out from her embrace.

“What happened? Did someone bully you?” she asked, placing her hands firmly on Luo Jing’s shoulders. That was when she noticed that one of the buttons on Luo Jing’s collar had popped off. The second button was barely hanging on, suggesting that her clothes had been forcefully yanked.

Luo Jing had remained tense the entire day, holding everything in until now. Only after seeing Chen Xin did her emotions start to spill over. The humiliation from being cursed at and the fear from being attacked all came crashing down at once. Her eyes filled with tears as the tip of her nose turned red, the emotion swelling inside her too overwhelming to contain. She did not sob aloud, but the glimmer of unshed tears in her eyes made her look even more pitiful.

Seeing her like this only made Chen Xin angrier. She wished she could drag out the person who had hurt Luo Jing and teach them a painful lesson, yet she knew that comforting Luo Jing had to come first. Chen Xin unbuckled her seatbelt and moved closer to pull Luo Jing gently into her arms.

“What happened? Will you tell me?”

Luo Jing sniffled a few times, slowly relaxing under her care. Being loved and comforted like this made her feel safe. Once she felt steady again, she told Chen Xin everything that had happened earlier that day. When she recalled Li Cheng’s wild, nearly hysterical rage, she shivered unconsciously. It felt like she had faced a madwoman.

She frowned as she had not seen the photos herself, since the school forum post had already been forcibly removed, but Chen Zhi had caught a glimpse and described them to her. Even that brief description was enough to make Luo Jing think that if such images of herself had leaked, she would have gone completely numb from fear.

Just imagining herself in that situation was terrifying. A small part of her even began to feel sympathy for Li Cheng.

“We don’t even know who spread those photos, yet it is certain that many people must have seen them already.”

Luo Jing had not looked at the post directly, but plenty of her classmates had. Some had reacted with disgust, while others found the content thrilling.

After all, how often does someone get to see shocking images of a classmate in bed with an older man? The photos were intense and graphic. They stirred the interest of many male students, who laughed and joked about them while whispering nasty comments about Li Cheng.

The post had remained online for two full hours before it was forcibly taken down. By then, who knew how many had viewed it? And who knew how many had saved it?

Chen Xin listened quietly, but she was inwardly satisfied. She had not expected the task she had arranged to be completed so quickly and efficiently. It had been a pleasant surprise.

Of course, Chen Xin had been behind it. However, she did not think she was in the wrong. Li Cheng had been the one to circulate photos of Luo Jing in the first place, which led to Luo Jing being isolated and humiliated by her classmates. If she had the courage to commit that act, then she should have the courage to face the consequences. Chen Xin had only made sure she got a taste of her own medicine.

The difference was that the photos Li Cheng had were far more indecent. When Chen Xin first saw them, even she had been stunned. She had never imagined someone so young could be involved in such things. Nearly every transaction had been documented. For someone like that to even attempt to secretly take pictures of Luo Jing and set her up was baffling.

It made no sense.

What had already been shared online was only a mild selection. That girl should be grateful that Chen Xin had not posted the more obscene ones.

Chen Xin had no intention of telling Luo Jing about any of that because she was far too pure and innocent to be burdened with such things. There was no need for her to know such dirty details. Chen Xin simply said, with a calm expression, “If someone does not want others to find out, the best way is not to do those things in the first place. No one forced her to take those photos. She cannot blame anyone else.”

In several of the pictures, Li Cheng had even been smiling at the camera. She looked like she was enjoying herself and treating it as a souvenir.

Luo Jing frowned again, unsure of what to think. Chen Xin told her not to worry about it any further.

“The post is gone now. Let it be. I’m taking you to the hospital.”

“The hospital?” Luo Jing was confused. “I already put medicine on my neck. There’s no need to go.”

Chen Xin responded as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. “I’m taking you for a medical evaluation. After that, we’ll file charges against your classmate. She cannot be allowed to get away with hurting you.”

Luo Jing quickly tried to stop her. “Forget it. Li Cheng must be panicking after what happened. My injuries aren’t serious. I won’t press charges. She already has enough to deal with.”

Although she did not like Li Cheng, Luo Jing did not want to attack someone who had already fallen into such a bad situation.

There was no way around it. Chen Xin had to give up and drive her home.

The house was quiet as Xu Fangting was not home, which left Luo Jing feeling puzzled.

“Where’s Auntie? Did she have plans today too?”

Chen Xin knew exactly where her mother had gone.

“She went out shopping for clothes. She’s meeting my dad in a couple of days and wants to look nice.”

Luo Jing nodded. “I hope Uncle and Auntie reconcile soon.” Now that she thought about it, she realized she had never even met her uncle.

Chen Xin gave a faint, skeptical smile. “That might not happen.”

She did not say anything else. Watching her mother dress up with such hopeful anticipation only made her worry that she would be disappointed in the end.

A few days later, Xu Fangting dressed herself with care. She chose her outfit thoughtfully. This was a man she had spent decades of her life with. Of course, she hoped he would want her back. She dressed elegantly and tastefully, avoiding anything too flashy, wanting to appear composed rather than desperate. She timed her arrival at the cafe precisely. She did not want Chen Zheng to think she had come too early out of eagerness.

Chen Zheng had already arrived. When he saw her, he raised his hand slightly to signal her to come over.

This cafe was high-end and peaceful. It was perfect for a quiet conversation. Chen Zheng had already ordered two coffees, with one intended for Xu Fangting. Over the years, she had always deferred to his preferences in public, and this time was no different.

Xu Fangting did not particularly like plain black coffee. She left the steaming cup untouched, and a faint bitterness lingered in the air between them. She lifted her head slightly, her beauty still radiant despite the years.

“What did you want to talk about?”

On the surface, she appeared indifferent. In her heart, she was thrilled. She would never bow her head easily. If Chen Zheng wanted her back, he would have to beg for it properly.

Chen Zheng set down his cup after taking a sip. He leaned back slightly. His expression remained stern and composed.

“Tell Chen Xin to promote Chen Weiguo to Vice President. The sooner, the better.”

Xu Fangting froze. The tone and content of his request were completely commanding. Everything she had planned to say caught in her throat and refused to come out. After a long silence, she finally asked, “What… what did you just say?”

Chen Zheng immediately revealed a look of irritation. He repeated himself without hesitation. This time, he added coldly, “I do not know what kind of example you think you are setting. I gave her one simple task, and she is stalling and making excuses. Does she think she is above taking orders now?”

He was accusing her of poor parenting. No matter how many times he had asked, Chen Xin refused to follow through on his plan. After visiting several times without success, Chen Zheng had lost his patience. Knowing that Xu Fangting was staying with their daughter, he summoned her to apply pressure on Chen Xin directly.
