The Crybaby Mistress GL - Chapter 60
Chen Xin had absolutely no intention of accepting her father’s arrangement. The company was under her management now. If she said no, then it meant no. No matter how much influence Chen Zheng wielded, it would not get past her line of defense.
Chen Zheng was furious. After being rejected twice, his expression darkened until it resembled the bottom of a pot. Chen Xin responded with calm indifference. “Dad, this truly is not possible.”
With that, Chen Zheng slammed the door on his way out.
Chen Xin resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She shook her head and quickly finished the last bit of her work. As she stood up, she told her secretary, “I need to step out.”
The secretary jogged over. She was already fully aware of Chen Xin’s schedule and had prepared a fruit basket in advance. This was no ordinary roadside purchase. It had been custom-ordered from a premium vendor and was filled with rare, high-end fruits. A gentle, fragrant aroma wafted from it. “Miss Chen, here is what you requested.”
This was something Chen Xin had specially ordered, and it had just arrived today in its freshest state.
Chen Xin gave an approving nod when she saw the basket. She lifted it with one hand and turned to leave. However, just before stepping out, she turned back to ask, “Do you think this outfit is suitable? Is it formal enough?”
The secretary looked at the tailored suit Chen Xin was wearing. The cut was more fitted than usual, which gave her a sharper and more energetic appearance. Her hair had also been carefully styled. Everything about her appearance was appropriate. “Don’t worry. It is very suitable.”
Chen Xin still felt a little uncertain. “Does it look too stiff or serious?”
The secretary silently sighed. In her opinion, Chen Xin’s seriousness came from her personality, not from her outfit. Still, she answered honestly. “Not at all, Miss Chen. You look great.”
Finally reassured, Chen Xin turned and left. Her unusual behavior sparked the secretary’s curiosity. The itinerary only mentioned visiting an important person, but the secretary had not dared to ask further. Clearly, it was someone very important. Chen Xin had never asked about her appearance before.
Soon, Chen Xin arrived at the hospital with the fruit basket in hand. She walked briskly through the hallway, her expression slightly tense. She did not stop until she reached the door of a private suite. Standing there, she took several deep breaths before gently knocking.
“Excuse me…” Chen Xin softly pushed the door open. Although she wanted to peek inside first, she knew it would be rude. Instead, she walked in with calm confidence.
At that moment, Luo Jing’s mother happened to be awake. She looked up and seemed momentarily confused, clearly trying to recall when she had seen this visitor before.
After all, they had only met briefly once. It was perfectly normal for her not to remember. Chen Xin’s face broke into a warm smile. “Auntie, I am Luo Jing’s friend. I visited with her last time.”
At the mention of her daughter, Luo Jing’s mother seemed to recall the visit. She nodded in realization. “Oh… is Luo Jing here too?”
Chen Xin replied with a smile. “Not this time. Luo Jing is attending her classes today.”
Luo Jing’s mother appeared puzzled. “Then why did you come all this way by yourself?”
The reason for Chen Xin’s visit was not difficult to understand. She and Luo Jing were bound to be family sooner or later, which meant that Luo Jing’s mother would become her family as well. It was only natural to come and make a good impression. One visit would not be enough. She fully intended to visit regularly.
Still, to avoid overwhelming her future mother-in-law, Chen Xin chose her words carefully. “I had some business to take care of nearby, and on my way back I thought about how you were still in the hospital. I decided to drop in and see how you were doing. This way I can also update Luo Jing on your condition. She has been very concerned about you but cannot visit often due to her school schedule. By the way, this is just a small gift.”
No parent disliked hearing that their child was concerned for them. Luo Jing’s mother was no exception. Hearing how much Luo Jing cared brought a smile to her face. Her impression of Chen Xin improved immediately. “Oh my, you didn’t have to bring anything. I cannot even finish the fruit I already have.”
Indeed, her health was still fragile and her appetite small. Only then did Chen Xin notice several boxes of high-end fruit beside the bed. She glanced around discreetly. Who else had come to visit and brought such luxurious offerings? These items were clearly expensive, and the packaging did not match what she imagined the Luo sisters would choose.
Chen Xin set the thought aside for the moment. Her expression remained gentle and attentive. She noticed that Luo Jing’s mother had touched the cantaloupe a couple of times, so she stepped forward and offered, “Let me cut some of this for you. You can see if the taste suits you.”
Without waiting for a response, she picked up the cantaloupe. Although Luo Jing’s mother felt it was too much to ask of her, Chen Xin had already taken the knife and started slicing. Since the cutting had already begun, it would be awkward to stop her.
“Thank you. That is very kind of you,” Luo Jing’s mother said.
“No need for thanks,” Chen Xin replied with a deeper meaning. “Luo Jing and I have a very special relationship. It is only natural for me to take care of you.”
Before Luo Jing’s mother could think more deeply about that statement, another visitor arrived.
Chen Xin turned her head. The moment she recognized the visitor, her expression stiffened. She had not expected to see this person here.
The other woman also appeared surprised but quickly smiled with practiced ease. “Miss Chen, what a coincidence.” Her voice was soft and clear, as soothing as a gentle stream.
“Miss Wu.” Chen Xin returned the greeting politely. Inwardly, she was seething. What kind of cursed fate is this? I even run into this lunatic here.
At that moment, Wu Mohua appeared perfectly composed. After the brief exchange, she turned to Luo Jing’s mother. “Auntie, are you comfortable in your room? I hope I am not disturbing you today.”
Luo Jing’s mother visibly brightened upon seeing Wu Mohua. She smiled warmly and reached out to take her delicate hand. Then she turned to Chen Xin and introduced her with clear pride. “You two know each other? This is my eldest daughter’s boss. She is the one who arranged for me to stay in this private room. Such a kind and considerate young woman.”
Watching how closely the two interacted made Chen Xin feel strangely overshadowed. A faint irritation began to stir in her chest.
Wu Mohua gently patted the back of Luo Jing’s mother’s hand. “Auntie, please don’t call me boss. That sounds far too formal. Luo Han has done so much for me. She is like a blessing in my life. Helping you is the least I can do.”
With a small motion of her hand, several assistants entered the room, each carrying elegant and expensive-looking gifts.
“I brought some winter coats for you. The weather is getting colder, and I thought it would be good for you to have some new clothes.”
Every coat they opened was clearly made of luxurious fur, and each one was undoubtedly worth a fortune.
“Oh no, these are far too extravagant. I cannot accept them. Please take them back,” Luo Jing’s mother said, overwhelmed. She had never owned such luxurious items in her life.
Wu Mohua replied with sincerity. “You really must accept them. Luo Han would worry if you did not have enough warm clothing. You know how she fusses over every detail.”
Mentioning her daughter made Luo Jing’s mother relent. “That child… very well, I will accept a few of them. But you must not bring more next time.”
Whether more gifts would follow would depend entirely on Wu Mohua’s intentions.
As Chen Xin listened to Wu Mohua cleverly use the Luo sisters as shields, a faint contempt flickered in her heart. She did not even realize she had just done the same thing by repeatedly mentioning Luo Jing. As for the gifts… had this woman gone overboard?
Chen Xin could not afford to lose ground.
She stepped forward again, piling on compliments and concern. Soon Luo Jing’s mother was smiling so much that lines creased her entire face. The two women exchanged words back and forth like seasoned performers. Though they smiled politely, their mutual disdain was unmistakable beneath the surface.
The room was filled with this tense harmony until a dry cough broke the rhythm and drew everyone’s attention.
The door to the room was half open. Luo Nan stood there with her arms folded across her chest as she leaned casually against the doorframe. Her tone was cool and measured as she asked, “What exactly are the two of you doing here?”
