Chen Xin stayed for the weekend, but eventually she had to leave. This period became a time for Luo Jing and Xu Fangting to get used to each other. Chen Xin also took the chance to observe whether her mother was being overly harsh. Surprisingly, the situation was not as bad as she had expected.

Luo Jing was not particularly cunning, but compared to the pampered children from wealthy families, she was far more considerate. She took the initiative to clean the house, which already put her far ahead. She also cooked every meal with great care. Xu Fangting found it strange that living in an apartment actually felt more comfortable than their old villa. Even though they used to have a chef and maids at home, none of them served her with as much attentiveness as Luo Jing did.

Something as simple as having control over the TV remote was a new experience for Xu Fangting. Back at home, she rarely watched television. Her husband, Chen Zheng, would always occupy the living room with his newspaper and news programs. Chen Xin also had a habit of watching the news, so Xu Fangting rarely had a chance to use the remote control herself. She never expected that one day she would be the one choosing channels.

Her daughters often talked about various dramas and recommended shows. She used to think she would never be interested, but once she started watching, she could not stop. She even asked Chen Xin to set up a subscription for an online streaming service so she could binge-watch from the first episode.

Chen Xin was not interested in romance dramas. When they watched together, she would often interrupt with sarcastic comments, which disrupted Xu Fangting’s immersion. Eventually, she was kicked out of the room and sent to her bedroom. Luo Jing, on the other hand, enjoyed watching and followed along with interest.

One morning, Chen Xin was getting ready for work. Xu Fangting had also gotten up. She did not want to eat breakfast at the dining table. She preferred to eat while watching television. Luo Jing prepared a plate with creamy scrambled eggs and two slices of crispy toast. She added some cold ham, crunchy bacon, and a small bowl of salad. Xu Fangting ate with a fork while her eyes remained glued to the romantic scenes on the screen.

As Chen Xin was finishing her meal, Luo Jing walked her to the door. Xu Fangting did not even acknowledge her daughter leaving for work. Chen Xin accepted the briefcase Luo Jing handed her and looked sharp and professional again in her work attire.

Standing at the door, they whispered to each other. “I am heading to work. Will you be alright on your own? I probably will not be back today,” Chen Xin said. She was concerned about whether Luo Jing could handle her mother. Xu Fangting had clearly come to stir up trouble, and without her around, there would be no one to deflect it.

“I will be fine. Your mother is actually easy to get along with. Besides, she said she is going out today. I do not think we will spend much time together,” Luo Jing replied with little concern. After two days of living together, she felt that Xu Fangting was not that difficult to handle.

She still had classes to attend, and Xu Fangting had her own schedule. They would only see each other in the mornings and evenings. There really was not much to worry about.

“Good,” Chen Xin said with a nod. It was a relief that Luo Jing could manage her mother, and at the door, the two of them exchanged several kisses as they reluctantly parted. Chen Xin wished she could take Luo Jing to work with her, but such a dream could only remain a fantasy. “Mom, I am leaving for work now,” she called out before leaving.

Xu Fangting, completely absorbed in the drama, only responded with a distracted hum. She had plans to meet her close friends today and discuss the plot. Luo Jing watched until the elevator doors closed, then returned inside to clear the empty dishes from the table.

Since the drama was not yet over, Luo Jing brought a glass of juice and set it on the small table in front of Xu Fangting. She then washed the dishes.

Classes were not until the afternoon, so she had no need to rush. She sat beside Xu Fangting on the sofa and asked casually about the plot. She had been too busy earlier to pay close attention.

“It is not going well. The female lead’s past has been discovered, and now the male lead cannot forgive her,” Xu Fangting explained. On the screen, a glamorous actress looked tearful as she tried to explain herself. The handsome male lead shoved her hand away. Moments later, they were suddenly kissing passionately against the wall. The drama was so intense that Xu Fangting forgot to eat her toast. She clenched her fork tightly, and Luo Jing’s cheeks turned a little red as she watched.

Soon after, both of them left the apartment. Xu Fangting, completely absorbed in the story, forgot her original plan to give Luo Jing a hard time. She chatted non-stop about the drama, worrying that it would end soon and wondering what she would watch next. She even wanted to find more shows starring the male lead, who she thought was incredibly handsome.

Since both women rarely had someone to talk to, their conversation flowed smoothly. Luo Jing arrived at school in high spirits, with the drama’s theme song still playing in her head. She did not notice the strange looks from her classmates.

She found a seat. Lu Ting was already there. Luo Jing greeted him as she usually did, but instead of his usual cheerful response, he stared at her as if something was written on her face.

“What is going on?” she finally asked, sensing that something was off. Not only Lu Ting but nearly everyone in class was looking at her.

Lu Ting opened his mouth but said nothing. That was when Li Cheng stepped in with a mocking smile. “What else could it be? Luo Jing, you are something else. No wonder your clothes and hair changed so suddenly. Turns out you really know how to make money.”

Her last words were spoken with a sarcastic tone. It was clear that something shady was being implied. Luo Jing blinked, still confused. “Huh?” she asked softly.

Li Cheng did not let up. “You do not have to act so innocent with us. We are not your… clients.”

Suddenly, Luo Jing understood what was happening. She looked around and saw the mixed expressions on her classmates’ faces. Some were indifferent. Others looked suspicious. Most, however, looked scornful or dismissive.

They were all still students. When a rumor spread that someone in the class was being financially supported by someone older, the instinctive reaction was judgment. Luo Jing had changed a lot recently. To many, it now seemed clear that she had traded her body for money and luxury.

Her face turned pale. All the joy she had felt earlier in the day vanished. Her face was full of confusion and helplessness. She looked to Lu Ting, her closest friend in class, hoping for some comfort. Just one kind look would have made things easier.

To her shock, when their eyes met, she saw contempt in his expression. Even though he looked away quickly, Luo Jing had seen it.

He looked down on her now.

Her mood plummeted. It felt like falling into an icy pit. The secret she had guarded so carefully had been exposed. As expected, everyone responded with scorn. Luo Jing felt dizzy. By the time the teacher walked in and Li Cheng took her seat, Luo Jing had missed her chance to defend herself. She returned to her seat in silence. To her classmates, her lack of response seemed like an admission.

There was no point in explaining. She really had been financially supported.

Luo Jing did not speak for the rest of the day. Around her, classmates whispered behind her back. Their words were filled with mockery and gossip. Luo Jing had dressed beautifully and looked dazzling. This made some of the girls even more vicious. They trampled on her reputation with their words.

Luo Jing pretended not to hear any of it. By the time school ended, her face was stiff and her eyes empty. She sat there in a daze, not knowing what to do.
