As soon as Luo Jing got into the car, she felt as if the heavy atmosphere inside was pressing the air out of her lungs. Chen Xin started the engine with a cold expression, and Luo Jing, sitting in the passenger seat, dared not say a word. She only snuck glances at Chen Xin’s side profile while nervously twisting the hem of her shirt.

Luo Jing had never seen Chen Xin angry. In front of her, Chen Xin always wore a light smile, sometimes even acting like a playful child, dragging her into embarrassing games. This cold and stern expression was something Luo Jing had never encountered before.

The car moved forward in silence for a while before Chen Xin suddenly spoke in a sharp tone. “Seatbelt.”

Luo Jing realized she had forgotten to fasten her seatbelt. She had been so nervous upon entering the car that it had completely slipped her mind. Flustered, she hurried to buckle it.

Chen Xin’s voice had broken the silence, and Luo Jing took the chance to speak. After fastening her seatbelt, she asked timidly, “Miss Chen, are you angry?”

Chen Xin continued driving without responding at first. Eventually, she said, “It’s already this late and you are not even home. Where exactly were you today?”

Luo Jing had no choice but to explain everything, detailing why she had been at the hospital. However, it became clear that this was not the answer Chen Xin wanted. She glanced sideways at Luo Jing, her tone sharp and direct. “I checked your transaction history. Do you even understand what kind of places you have been spending money at?”

Luo Jing’s heart skipped a beat. She thought of those chaotic expenses and immediately felt guilty. “I… I went to nightclubs and karaoke with my classmates.”

Her voice was soft and uncertain. She looked ashamed. “I spent a lot of your money. I am sorry.”

Looking back, she felt utterly foolish for not refusing Li Cheng. Her shame weighed heavily, and she could not lift her head. “I will repay what I spent.”

Chen Xin replied in frustration. “This is not about the money.” Luo Jing had considered returning the amount using part of the one million yuan, but that was not the issue. Chen Xin’s anger intensified. “Do you realize what kind of places those are? You were there until after midnight. Do you even understand how dangerous that is for someone like you?”

Luo Jing shrank in her seat under the scolding. She quickly replied, “I understand now. I won’t go again.”

She bowed her head so low it seemed as if she wanted to disappear. Chen Xin began to feel a bit of sympathy. However, when she thought about Luo Jing chatting and partying with strangers in places she knew nothing about, her stomach twisted with unease. She believed she needed to teach Luo Jing a lesson. With a motion of her hand, she said, “I am going to confiscate your gold card for one month.”

Luo Jing did not hesitate. She handed over the card immediately. Chen Xin accepted it and said, “If you need any money during this time, just come to me directly.”

Luo Jing no longer had any need for spending. She pressed her lips together and wore the expression of someone who knew she had done wrong. Seeing her like this, Chen Xin’s anger gradually softened. Her tone turned gentler as she asked about Luo Jing’s sister. “How is your sister doing?”

Luo Jing answered, “She needs to rest for a few days. My sister has always been healthy, but working two jobs has made her too tired. I should also take shifts caring for our mother. That would help reduce the burden on the family.”

She reflected on how both her older sisters worked during the day and spent nights at the hospital. Sooner or later, their health would suffer. Luo Han even had an extra job at night. Luo Jing felt deeply concerned. “My older sister still has a night job. I met her employer today. She seemed strange. I want to convince my sister to quit that job.”

Chen Xin was intrigued. “Strange? In what way? Did she even follow your sister to the hospital?” As soon as she said that, she realized she had done the same and chuckled at the irony.

Luo Jing tilted her head and recalled, “Actually, the employer is very beautiful. She has golden hair and might be of mixed descent. But her eyes are pitch black and her movements were really strange. She looked quite scary.”

Chen Xin fell silent for a moment before asking, “Is her surname Wu, by any chance?”

Luo Jing’s eyes widened. “How do you know that?”

Chen Xin touched her nose and grimaced as if she had remembered something unpleasant. “Let’s just say it is a cursed connection.”

She brushed off the topic. Luo Jing found the coincidence surprising, but she did not press further. She continued to share her worries about her sister. To her surprise, Chen Xin agreed that Luo Han should resign. As someone familiar with Wu Mohua, she believed it was unsafe to work under her.

It remained unclear how the two had connected. From what Chen Xin knew, Luo Jing’s elder sister had dropped out of school after middle grade and worked as a cook in a restaurant. How she ended up working for someone like Wu Mohua was a mystery.

What was even more puzzling was that Wu Mohua allowed her to leave the hospital at night. That kind of importance placed on an employee seemed excessive.

Still, Chen Xin knew it was not her place to interfere too much. She only felt heartache seeing how much Luo Jing had to worry about. Thinking this might be an opportunity to build trust, she suggested, “Why don’t I transfer your mother to a better hospital room? I can cover the expenses. That way, your family’s burden would be lighter, right?”

She expected Luo Jing to be pleasantly surprised. However, Luo Jing’s expression froze instead. After a pause, she politely declined. “Thank you, Miss Chen. You have already done enough for me. We can handle the family matters ourselves.”

Luo Jing gave a sweet smile. “You have already been so kind to me. I truly appreciate it. But I can manage the hospital bills.” In truth, part of the costs had already come from the money Chen Xin gave her. The fifty thousand yuan had been from the one million.

She could not allow herself to become greedy. Chen Xin had helped her enough, especially with finances. She knew she should not ask for more. If she continued to rely on that support, it would be harder and harder to keep their relationship clear.

Chen Xin had not expected to be turned down. She stared at Luo Jing’s smile and felt a distance growing between them. Her own smile faded. “I just wanted to help you.”

“I know.” Luo Jing nodded. “That is why I cannot accept it.”

It was all too much. Luo Jing feared that if she accepted too much, she would no longer know how to pull herself back.

Suddenly, the car slowed and pulled over to the side of the road. Luo Jing was confused. When the car came to a stop, the light from the street lamps revealed Chen Xin’s stormy expression.

Chen Xin asked in a low voice, “Do you really believe that what we have is only a financial arrangement?”

Her face was dark with anger. Luo Jing’s repeated refusals had clearly crossed a line. Chen Xin felt as though she had hit a barrier that Luo Jing had deliberately built. That barrier used money as a boundary to remind them both that their connection began and ended with one million yuan.

Normally, their time together was easy and natural. Chen Xin did not believe for a second that Luo Jing was unaware of her feelings.

Luo Jing hesitated briefly. Then she gently placed her hands over Chen Xin’s. “I just do not want to forget my place.”

Her tone was soft. But the implication behind her words confirmed Chen Xin’s worst thoughts. It felt like a fire ignited in her chest. The heat clouded her mind and erased her rationality.

Was all her affection and care to be reduced to a mere agreement? Would Luo Jing really leave without looking back once the year ended?

Chen Xin let out a cold laugh. Her reason had already been overwhelmed by anger. “If that’s what you think, then take off your clothes right now. We will do it in the car.”

“Right now?” Luo Jing finally panicked. Although it was nighttime and the road was isolated, she had never done anything like that in public. She clutched her collar and did not move.

Chen Xin’s tone grew even colder. “What is the matter? Are you unwilling to fulfill your part of the arrangement as someone who is being kept?”
