The Cannon Fodder Stole the Male Lead’s Script GL - Chapter 65
Jiang Yun smiled at the girl in front of her, who stood a whole head shorter than she did. In that moment, the emptiness in her heart was completely filled. It had been worth the effort to catch a flight, book a hotel, and arrange a meal.
“You must be hungry. Shall we eat?”
She loosened her hold on Zhan Rao and tried to guide her to the table to eat. But Zhan Rao stubbornly refused to let go. She wrapped her arms tightly around Jiang Yun’s waist and pressed her face against her chest as she crouched on the floor with her legs folded under her.
Jiang Yun was startled and gently called her name. “Zhan Rao?”
But the girl in her arms only shook her head and would not budge an inch.
Then Jiang Yun felt it. Her shirt was damp.
She sighed and softly stroked Zhan Rao’s hair. Bending down, she lifted her up and carried her to the bed. She lay beside her and wrapped her arms around her again.
She continued to gently stroke Zhan Rao’s head. At last, the girl could no longer hold back her tears. She began to sob uncontrollably.
“Jiang Yun, Grandma is very sick.”
“Yes, I know.”
“I’m so scared she’s going to leave us. I’m really scared. Why did it all happen so fast?”
“Don’t be afraid. She won’t leave.”
“Just two months ago, during summer break, she was perfectly fine. How could things change so quickly? I’m so heartbroken.”
Zhan Rao cried so hard she could barely speak.
Jiang Yun held her more tightly and rested her chin on the top of her head. She gently rubbed her back in comfort. “There, there. Your grandma will be alright.”
Zhan Rao listened to Jiang Yun’s soothing words and felt her soft touch. She buried her face deeper into her embrace. This warmth seemed to ease all her sorrow.
She wished she could stay in this embrace forever, never waking up from it.
Jiang Yun held Zhan Rao for an entire hour until the girl eventually fell into a deep sleep.
Jiang Yun slowly shifted her body backward by ten centimeters, just enough to lower her head and watch Zhan Rao’s sleeping face.
Her nose was a bit blocked from all the crying. Every few seconds, she would sniffle heavily, and her little face was wrinkled with discomfort. Tear tracks were still visible.
Jiang Yun leaned down and gently kissed her face, one spot after another, kissing away every last tear.
She looked at her for a long while before finally getting up. She tucked the blanket around her and picked up her phone to make a call.
Jiang Yanyang was surprised to receive a call from Jiang Yun.
In her memory, her cousin was someone who always looked down on others and never spared her a glance. She was shocked that Jiang Yun would call her this late at night. She deliberately let the phone ring for a few minutes. But Jiang Yun was surprisingly patient. She kept calling, waiting quietly until Jiang Yanyang had finished her hospital rounds and returned to her office after reminding the nurses about the night’s priorities.
Finally, she picked up. “Hello? Who is this?”
She pretended not to recognize the number.
Jiang Yun remained calm and spoke politely. “Cousin, it’s me. Jiang Yun.”
Jiang Yanyang nearly felt the sky had turned upside down. That brat actually called her cousin?
Technically, they were not directly related cousins. Her family was a collateral branch of the Jiang family. They were well-off and both of her parents ran separate hospitals, making her a second-generation doctor. But compared to Jiang Yun’s side, the difference was like heaven and earth.
At family gatherings, Jiang Yun never even acknowledged her. Now she was calling her cousin.
Jiang Yanyang rubbed the goosebumps on her arms and said, annoyed, “What does the great Miss Jiang want from me? Speak directly. Not everyone wants to kiss up to you.”
Jiang Yun was caught off guard and felt awkward. She had indeed offended Jiang Yanyang many times in the past. She could not blame her for being cold now.
“Cousin, then I’ll get to the point. I need your help.”
She explained Zhan Rao’s grandmother’s condition as best as she could based on what Zhan Rao had told her.
“Qing City doesn’t have many medical resources, so I was wondering if your hospital might accept a patient like this. Also, would it be possible to ask you to help us find a specialist to take a look?”
Jiang Yanyang snorted after hearing her request. Her tone was not bad, but she clearly had not done her homework before asking for a favor. That annoyed her.
“From what you said, it sounds like a liver and kidney issue. We treat a lot of those cases. If you need a specialist, just go to our hospital’s website and pick anyone from the top ten on the list. I’m on duty, so I can’t chat.”
Then she hung up.
Jiang Yun stared at her phone.
She knew it. People she had offended in the past were not going to make this easy.
She could have asked others for help, but they were all her parents’ contacts. Once she made that move, her parents would get involved. Based on how the current plot was going, if her parents showed up, she might lose control of the situation.
Right now, her parents were still in their stage of being disappointed in her. They only provided what was absolutely necessary and refused everything else. If she wanted something, they withheld it. If she did not, they pushed it on her.
Even if she wanted to improve their relationship, they would not even answer her calls.
This storyline simply was not at the point where her parents were supposed to appear.
So she gave up that idea.
She obediently searched for Tongxin Hospital online and visited their website. The moment she saw the top specialist in the liver and kidney department, she froze.
The three characters of the name read Jiang Yanyang.
She did not know whether to laugh or cry.
Just how angry had her cousin been in the past that she was so eager to show off the moment she got the chance?
Meanwhile, in the office of the department head at Tongxin Hospital, Jiang Yanyang was browsing online shopping sites while clearly distracted.
Finally, her phone rang. She grinned in satisfaction.
She waited silently for the other person to speak.
Just as she had hoped, Jiang Yun spoke with great politeness. “I’m sorry, Sister Yanyang. I really didn’t know you were so amazing. You are the best expert at Tongxin Hospital.”
In the past, hearing Jiang Yun call her sister was unheard of, receiving a thank you from her was as rare as seeing the sun rise in the west, getting a request from her was harder than winning the lottery, and being sincerely praised by her was a once-in-a-lifetime miracle, so Jiang Yanyang was absolutely delighted.
This brat needed to learn how awesome her cousin truly was.
But she kept her cool.
She cleared her throat. “It’s really nothing. I’ve just been exposed to medicine since I was a child, so I picked things up a bit faster than others.”
Even doctors who had been practicing for seventy or eighty years ranked below her in that department. That was how skilled she was.
Jiang Yun had never realized her cousin could be this entertaining.
Aside from her habit of bragging, she was actually a good person.
And she really was exceptional. At just twenty-five, she was already a department head and a lead expert in the liver and kidney department at Tongxin Hospital. She was the definition of excellence.
“You really are amazing, Sister Yanyang. No need to be modest. About my classmate’s grandmother…”
Jiang Yanyang, now in a good mood, waved it off. “It’s no big deal. Have them bring her over tomorrow.”
Jiang Yun’s face lit up. “Thank you, Sister Yanyang. I’ll treat you to a great meal when I get to Chuan City.”
Jiang Yanyang flicked her ponytail proudly. “No need for that. Saving lives is my duty as a doctor. Just bring some fresh seafood from Qing City.”
Jiang Yun laughed out loud.
This cousin of hers was quite fun.
The Jiang family, it seemed, was not full of bad people. She had just been too arrogant and aloof before. She had offended too many, which was why so many disliked her.
Suddenly, her system panel lit up.
She saw the name Jiang Yanyang glowing under the family ties category, and her favorability rating had jumped by fifty percent.
A single call and a couple of sincere words had earned that much goodwill?
Blood really was thicker than water.
She looked at the top two gray names on her panel and felt a stir in her heart.
Would the parents who once loved her ever forgive her?
——
Zhan Rao slept soundly and only woke up when her father knocked on the door.
She opened her eyes and looked around. Jiang Yun was already gone. If it were not for the strong, confident handwriting on the note by the bed, she would have thought it had all been a dream.
I have something to take care of. I went to Chuan City first. I’ll wait for you there.
Zhan Rao was confused. Why wait in Chuan City?
But her father was still knocking urgently. She quickly folded the note and placed it in her pocket, then opened the door.
Her father was beaming with excitement. “Hurry up, Rao Rao. Pack your things. We’re heading to Chuan City.”
Chuan City?
Wasn’t that where Jiang Yun said she would be?
“Why are we going there?”
Her father’s eyes were red with joy. “Your mother called Chuan City’s liver and kidney specialists again this morning. You know Chuan City has far better medical facilities than Qing City. She did not expect anything, but when she contacted the most prestigious Tongxin Hospital, they asked for your grandma’s name and immediately said they had a bed available. Their top doctor, Director Jiang, is even available to take the case. It was such a coincidence that we all believe it’s a sign from heaven. Your mom and uncle already took your grandmother there. We need to drive over as quickly as we can. Hurry and get ready.”
Zhan Rao listened carefully. When she heard there was hope, she felt like jumping for joy. But when she heard that the top doctor’s surname was Jiang, she instantly understood.
This was not heaven’s mercy. This was Jiang Yun giving her grandmother a chance.
Tears of joy filled her eyes.
“Then Dad, wait a moment while I wash my face. We’ll leave right away.”
She rushed into the bathroom and splashed water on her face. As the water ran, she laughed, and tears streamed down her cheeks.
Her father watched her with emotion and said with a smile, “Silly girl. This is good news. Why are you crying?”
She shook her head, wiped her face, and urged him to get on the road.
——
Once the family arrived in Chuan City, they went directly to Tongxin Hospital.
To their surprise, the big hospital in the city was actually more efficient than the smaller hospitals back home. They did not need to deal with endless paperwork.
As soon as they arrived, they were assigned a room. Only a few forms needed to be signed.
In less than thirty minutes, everything was done. A team of experts even showed up immediately for a consultation.
Everything went far more smoothly than expected.
The whole family felt like they had hit the jackpot.
Only Zhan Rao knew it was Jiang Yun who had set all of this up in advance.
Once her grandmother was settled, the specialists gave their diagnosis.
“This is not an untreatable condition. However, the treatment will take a long time and require considerable effort. Your family will need to be prepared to give this a lot of attention.”
Jiang Yanyang explained the situation to Zhan Rao’s mother.
Her mother burst into tears and gripped her hand tightly.
“Thank you, Director Jiang.”
Jiang Yanyang waved it off with a smile. “There’s no need to thank me. This is my job. And besides, I’m not the one you should be thanking.”
Zhan Rao’s mother was confused, but she was too happy to think more about it. She hurried into the room to take care of her mother.
As Jiang Yanyang passed by the room, she paused when she saw Zhan Rao and smiled.
“You must be Jiang Yun’s classmate.”
Zhan Rao nodded. “Hello, Director Jiang.”
Jiang Yanyang gave a small smile and walked away.
Zhan Rao’s father saw them speak and asked, “What did Director Jiang say to you?”
Zhan Rao smiled and shook her head. “Nothing much.”
Then she looked up at him. “Dad, can I go out for a while?”
He was puzzled. “Out? Where to? We’re planning to eat once Grandma is settled.”
She replied with a bright smile. “I have something important to do. Don’t wait for me. I’ll be back this afternoon.”
She picked up her phone and ran out.
Her father looked at her excited expression and chuckled. “That girl is so happy she’s losing her mind.”
But today really was something to celebrate.
Zhan Rao sent a message as she ran.
She could not wait another minute to see Jiang Yun.
