Yan Kuo looked around uneasily at the students of Class 1, Grade 10. Each of them stared back at him with hostility. His confidence faltered, and his whole body felt uncomfortable, as if he no longer belonged in the space.

He opened his mouth, wanting to speak, but no words came out.

“It seems that Yan Kuo doesn’t need the three minutes. Then there’s no reason for the rest of us to waste our time,” Jiang Yun said after giving him a brief glance. She uncrossed her legs, picked up her bag, and stood up, clearly preparing to leave.

Yan Kuo panicked. He quickly reached out in an attempt to grab Jiang Yun’s sleeve, but she sidestepped smoothly, avoiding his grasp.

His hand froze awkwardly in midair, creating an undeniably embarrassing moment.

“Jiang Yun, I came here to ask you to let my family go.”

Jiang Yun raised an eyebrow and looked at him with a half-smile. “What do you mean by that?”

Yan Kuo lowered his head. “You know very well what I mean. You’ve been pressing down on our mountain resort nonstop. Over the past few days, our financial losses have been severe. Please stop. If you call it off, we can consider all the grudges between us resolved. I will even let go of what happened in the alley near school.”

Earlier that Monday, Yan Kuo had been attacked in a nearby alley outside the school. Although he had no idea who the attacker was and surveillance footage yielded nothing, he was convinced that Jiang Yun had orchestrated it. Who else would dare target him?

And to have every camera around wiped clean within an hour was something that only someone in Jiang Yun’s circle could accomplish. No one else in Yinchuan High had the power to pull that off.

Initially, he wanted to investigate further, but his parents stopped him.

Since the Jiang family had already sued him for defamation and their resort had been forced to shut down for rectification, his parents were beyond displeased. They were furious. At this point, even if Jiang Yun really had ordered someone to beat him, they dared not pursue the matter or provoke her any further.

The Yan family could not afford the slightest friction with the Jiang family.

That was why he had humbled himself and come to beg her, which made it all the more jarring when Jiang Yun suddenly burst out laughing.

“Yan Kuo, are you out of your mind? Did you leave your brain behind in the exam room?”

Yan Kuo frowned at her words.

“First of all, I had no idea you were ambushed. I did not do it. You brought too much chaos upon yourself. Second, every grudge between us was your doing alone.”

“So when you say ‘resolved,’ you mean I should endure your lies, suffer the dangers caused by your resort’s negligence, and still be grateful for all the insults you’ve thrown my way?”

Jiang Yun let out a cold, dry laugh. “Thirdly, I simply don’t feel like forgiving you. I’ve been fed up with you for a long time. You should know how many people in Yinchuan are eager to replace your family and how many students at school, just as powerful as you, have suffered under your bullying because surely you are not blind to that.”

Upon hearing this, Yan Kuo clenched his fists. His jaw tightened and his face twisted with rage as he glared at her.

“So you have no intention of making peace?”

Jiang Yun responded calmly, “There is no need for that.”

Yan Kuo bit down on his lip, watching as she walked right past him with an air of complete confidence. Around him, the students of Class 1 jeered and laughed at him with impunity. Suddenly, he burst out laughing too. He called out to her retreating figure, “Fine. I begged you, and you refused. Don’t blame me for what happens next. Jiang Yun, if you want to drag me into hell, then don’t expect peace yourself! I will see to it that you are ruined!”

To Jiang Yun, Yan Kuo’s threats were nothing more than empty bluster.

The disparity between the Yan family and the Jiang family was enormous and could be compared to the vast distance separating the heavens from the earth.

All she had to do now was move a finger. A single phone call to a few of her family’s influential contacts in Yinchuan and the Yan family would be completely finished.

Even if Yan Kuo’s parents were to storm over and cry before hers, they would not even be able to get a meeting. And if by some chance they did, her parents’ disdain for Yan Kuo was so deep that it would be a miracle if they did not kick the couple out on the spot.

The Yan family’s pitiful scheme to win over the Jiang family’s only daughter had come to a complete and final end.

Having dealt with Yan Kuo, Jiang Yun felt utterly refreshed.

Zhan Rao was away for the weekend, and Jiang Yun decided it was a good opportunity to do something that could advance her career path.

If she relied solely on academic performance, the progress would be far too slow. Besides, the top city ranking was still being held by Zhan Rao. Even if Jiang Yun managed to surpass her, the academic branch of her career path could only contribute up to 50%. The other half required real-world success.

She could not depend on her family at this stage. The story had not advanced far enough, and her relatives had yet to make their official appearances. At present, she could not involve them, yet she refused to let her career path stagnate and planned to use the money she already had to do something productive.

Sitting in her car, she began scrolling through her phone, intending to ask Qin Meng if she had any ideas.

Just then, her phone rang.

The video call connected, revealing a dark-skinned face littered with freckles, topped with a wild, frizzy afro. Hideous, thick-framed black glasses sat perched on her nose.

Jiang Yun stared.

“Qin Meng, what on earth are you doing? What is that look? If I hadn’t known you for more than ten years, I wouldn’t have recognized you.”

Qin Meng quickly held a finger to her lips in a shushing gesture.

“Don’t call me that. Keep your voice down. If you must call me something, use Qin Changmeng.”

Jiang Yun blinked in confusion. “What?”

“I’ll explain later. Actually, I was just about to reach out to you. I’ll send you an address. Come sing with me.”

Jiang Yun knew that glint in her eyes too well. Qin Meng was clearly plotting something.

She gave a knowing laugh. “You want me to go so badly. Are you planning to set a trap for me?”

Before she became fully self-aware, Jiang Yun had been a naive and reckless girl who was constantly misled and taken advantage of. While Qin Meng had always stood by her and never caused her harm, she had certainly led her into more than a few messy situations.

Sure enough, Qin Meng seemed startled by her wariness. “Wow, Rich Girl, you really are becoming more unpredictable. It’s like you’re a completely different person.”

First, she had become indifferent to Yan Kuo, whom she used to obsess over. Now she was even trying to ruin him.

Then, she had seemingly changed orientation, becoming infatuated with a girl and even lashing out at Qin Meng in her defense.

Next, she started studying seriously, and her grades rose steadily.

And now she was asking for money-making ideas.

Was this really the same girl who used to do nothing but eat, drink, play, and chase boys? The same girl bent on burning through the Jiang family’s wealth?

“That’s right. If even you could see through me, then I might as well be finished,” Jiang Yun said coolly.

Qin Meng rolled her eyes dramatically. “We made a pact to be losers together, and now you’re working hard behind my back. Rich Girl, you have betrayed our sacred friendship. I’m giving you a chance to redeem yourself. Come to the address I sent you.”

“Unless you explain what’s going on, I’m not coming.”

“Oh, come on, Jiang Jiang, please just go along with it this once…”

Jiang Yun looked at her with quiet disapproval.

In the background, someone shouted, “Qin Changmeng! What’s taking so long? Are you lying to us? Do you seriously think you know Jiang Yun? No way she’d show up just because you asked.”

Qin Meng immediately covered the phone’s speaker and shouted back, “I’m coming!”

Then, returning to Jiang Yun on the call, she pleaded, “Please, Jiang Jiang. You heard them. I bragged that I could bring you, and that’s the only reason they let me in. If you don’t show, I’ll be humiliated.”

Jiang Yun frowned. “Are you serious? You used my name to trick them?”

Qin Meng showed not even a flicker of guilt. “How is that a trick? We’re friends, right? It’s not wrong to say I know you. Since you always said yes whenever I asked you to sing karaoke before, I don’t see any harm in saying I can get you to come now? Just say yes.”

“Please, Jiang Jiang, Rich Girl, Sister Yun, I really need you!”

Driven nearly mad by her begging, Jiang Yun finally gave in, but not without a condition. “Fine. I’ll go this one time if you promise to help me keep an eye out for any film or television projects that need investors.”

Qin Meng nodded rapidly. “Absolutely.”

Jiang Yun gave instructions to the driver to change course and head to the new location Qin Meng had sent.

As the car moved, Jiang Yun couldn’t help feeling puzzled. When did I become so popular? Someone actually invited Qin Meng to a party just because she claimed to know me?

Could this be what happens when you change your fate? Are those connections I lost now gradually returning to me?

Inside the KTV private room.

Qin Meng, with her afro bouncing wildly, was being gripped like a helpless chick by a girl who smirked as she tightened her hold. The girl’s clothes were slung haphazardly on her body. She sneered, “Qin Changmeng, you need to remember that the only reason you are here is because you claimed you could bring Jiang Yun. If she doesn’t come, do you know what happens next?”

With a signal, a group of girls surrounded Qin Meng. They tugged at her hair and flicked her thick glasses.

“Look at you. You’re so ugly. No wonder nobody at school wants to hang out with you.”

“What are you even wearing? You’re making us look bad just by standing here.”

“She says she knows Jiang Yun? She must be lying.”

Qin Meng dodged their hands and pitifully defended herself. “I really do know her. She said she’s coming. Please don’t kick me out.”

“Ha! You think Jiang Yun would associate with someone like you? What a joke. I say we toss her out. When Mei Yu comes back with drinks, we’ll start for real. Having her around is bad luck.”

Hearing that they planned to throw her out, Qin Changmeng panicked. “Wait, please. Just wait a bit longer. Jiang Yun really is coming.”

But the girls did not listen. They grabbed her collar, ready to shove her out.

“Stop.”

A girl seated at the very back of the room frowned, clearly impatient. “You all agreed. If she brings Jiang Yun, she can stay. Jiang Yun hasn’t arrived yet. What’s the rush? Sit down.”

She was holding a phone, her legs crossed elegantly. She wore a white dress, and her long black hair spilled over her back. Her facial features were stunning. With neatly trimmed nails and a delicate hand supporting her chin, she exuded effortless beauty and unmistakable irritation.

Qin Meng’s eyes lit up at the sight of her.

But in the next moment, she resumed her timid act, nodding and whispering, “Yes… she said she’ll be here soon.”

The girl turned her head and gestured. “You. Come here.”

Qin Meng, surprised, obeyed quickly.

“Sit here.”

The girl patted the seat next to her.

Qin Meng pressed her lips together, hesitating.

The girl grabbed her arm and pulled her down firmly into the seat. Then she looked up at the group who had just bullied her. “No matter whether Jiang Yun shows up or not, she stays here tonight. No one touches her.”

The girls exchanged awkward glances before nodding reluctantly.

“What’s your name?” the girl asked, putting away her phone and turning to face the timid figure beside her.

Up close, Qin Meng could not help but marvel again. This girl was breathtaking and looked even more stunning up close than she had from a distance. Her features were tiny and refined, and her expression carried a hint of arrogance. But with her straight black hair and clean white dress, she also looked excessively pure.

It hit her right in the heart.

Qin Meng bowed her head slightly, her voice small. “Qin Changmeng.”

The girl nodded and extended her hand. “Nice name. I’m Mei Jianxue. I’m Mei Yu’s cousin, a senior at Hongye High School.”

Qin Changmeng hurried to shake her hand. “Pleased to meet you! Truly!”
