The tips of their noses slowly drew closer. Zhan Rao’s heart pounded like thunder.

She stared intently at Jiang Yun’s lips as they came nearer, swallowing nervously. But just when their lips were about to meet, Jiang Yun suddenly stopped. She opened her eyes and looked at Zhan Rao with hesitation as she slightly lifted her neck and leaned back to create some distance between them.

Zhan Rao, who had just felt her heart racing like a drum, suddenly felt her heart stop. Jiang Yun’s movement felt like a bucket of cold water poured over her head, snapping her out of the moment.

“Jiang Yun…”

Jiang Yun rubbed her nose awkwardly. “I think maybe… you should take a shower first?”

Zhan Rao looked confused.

She glanced down at herself. There was a tiny splash of yellow liquid on her collar.

“I…”

As soon as she opened her mouth, she caught a faint smell coming from herself.

Realizing what Jiang Yun might have thought, Zhan Rao stared at her in shock. She suddenly stood up and shouted, “I didn’t eat poop!”

Jiang Yun was startled by the sudden outburst. She stared at Zhan Rao for a few seconds before covering her mouth and bursting into laughter.

Zhan Rao did not know what she was laughing at. She thought Jiang Yun had misunderstood and felt wronged. She tried to explain pitifully, “That… that wasn’t poop at all. I tricked Yan Kuo. It was durian my mom brought home. I heated it in the microwave and added some food coloring to make it look gross. I just wanted to scare him.”

“This bit on my collar and the taste in my mouth are because I was curious what durian would taste like heated, so I tried a small bite. I swear I didn’t eat poop!”

She looked at Jiang Yun with eyes full of tears and a trembling expression that suggested she might burst into tears if Jiang Yun did not believe her.

Jiang Yun laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes.

The earlier tension between them vanished completely. Holding her stomach with one hand and waving the other, Jiang Yun said, “Alright, alright. I never said you ate poop. I guessed it was durian from the start. Don’t worry.”

“Then why did you act like you were grossed out earlier?”

Zhan Rao’s face was red with frustration.

Jiang Yun looked embarrassed and uncertain how to explain.

Being a clean freak was hard to describe without making her angrier.

What could she do to fix this?

For the first time, Jiang Yun was at a loss.

Luckily, Zhan Rao did not make it too difficult. She huffed and poked Jiang Yun’s side, making her laugh and beg for mercy.

“Alright, I’ll stop teasing you. I won’t shower either. I’m heading home.”

She had taught Yan Kuo a lesson and now needed to go home so her parents would not worry.

The tracksuit had already been taken away by Jiang Yun’s maid. She packed her bag to leave.

But Jiang Yun stopped her, holding her hand to prevent her from packing.

“You’re going home tonight?”

“Yeah,” Zhan Rao replied with wide eyes, not understanding what Jiang Yun meant.

Unexpectedly, Jiang Yun leaned in, wrapped an arm around her waist, rested her chin on her shoulder, and spoke softly.

“Good little sister, can you stay tonight?”

Zhan Rao was stunned.

She looked at Jiang Yun in disbelief. Was this the same cold and aloof Jiang Yun?

“But my parents…”

“Just tell them your grades are not great and you need to tutor me before the exams. Say you will stay at my place this week.”

“The whole week? You’re so greedy!”

Jiang Yun smiled and rubbed her head affectionately. “So can you?”

Zhan Rao was speechless.

“Jiang Yun, please stop acting cute. My health bar is almost empty.”

“Good little sister, help your big sister just this once.”

Zhan Rao was overwhelmed.

“That is way too suggestive…”

“Alright, alright. I’ll stay. But you have to call them.” She handed Jiang Yun her phone. Jiang Yun took it and unlocked it easily with face recognition.

She confidently called Zhan Rao’s parents.

Zhan Rao leaned on her side, watching her make the call, smiling from ear to ear.

She was excited at the thought of spending a week living with Jiang Yun.

Zhan Rao’s mother answered and opened a video call. When she saw Jiang Yun’s pretty face, her eyes crinkled with a smile.

“Oh, it’s Jiang Yun! Why do you have Rao Rao’s phone? Is she with you now?”

Jiang Yun glanced at Zhan Rao. “Yes, Auntie. I wanted to ask for a favor. The exams are coming up on Wednesday, and there are many things I still don’t understand in my textbooks. Rao Rao is good at studying, so I’d like her to stay at my house this week and tutor me until my exams are over. Would that be okay?”

Zhan Rao’s father leaned in. “Huh? Stay for a whole week? That doesn’t sound ideal.”

Zhan Rao’s mother paused and hesitated. “Well, a week is quite a bit. Rao Rao looks quiet but can be quite a handful. I’m afraid she might cause trouble in your home. If your parents aren’t happy, it would be hard for you to explain. If she’s only tutoring you, how about meeting somewhere every night? I’ll come pick her up afterward. Would that work, Jiang Yun?”

Zhan Rao’s face immediately fell.

Jiang Yun looked at her and did not give up. “Auntie, I understand you don’t want to trouble us but I live alone. My parents are in the capital. So she wouldn’t be disturbing anyone. On the contrary, having her here would make the house feel less lonely. And with her helping me study, it would be the best arrangement. Even if my parents knew, they would be happy.”

“Exactly. Besides, Mom and Dad, you are both busy this week. It’s not convenient for you to drive me back and forth. We have a lot to review. We might be studying until one or two in the morning. Where could we even study that late? Would you come get me in the middle of the night?”

Zhan Rao anxiously grabbed the phone to plead with her parents.

Her mother sighed and said firmly, “You’re being too forward. I think Jiang Yun is not the one asking for tutoring. You just want to stay at her house. If you need to study together, do it at our place. Don’t cause trouble at her home. One more person just adds burden.”

Zhan Rao grew even more frustrated.

She just wanted to be alone with Jiang Yun. If they stayed at her house, her parents would always be there. That would ruin everything.

Jiang Yun replied with a calm smile. “Auntie, really, it’s no trouble. I live alone. And we have housekeepers to help with everything.”

Zhan Rao’s mother was stunned. She looked at her husband. They both realized this was not an ordinary household.

Just then, someone knocked on the door.

A maid said, “Miss, the dinner broth is ready. When would you like it served?”

Jiang Yun answered, “Bring it in ten minutes.”

“Understood.”

Zhan Rao’s parents clearly heard the exchange. Their expressions grew even more uneasy.

Zhan Rao did not notice their reaction and added, “See? I told you. She’s the only one home, and she has housekeepers. It’s definitely more comfortable than our house. So don’t worry. Besides, Jiang Yun has stayed at our place before. Why can’t I stay at hers?”

She tried to persuade them with the usual argument. Visiting each other’s homes helped build friendship, and her parents had always agreed in the past.

But this time, their expressions were serious and firm.

“No. Come home. Don’t bother her. Send us the address. We’re coming to pick you up now.”

Zhan Rao was confused. “Mom?!”

Her mother insisted, “That’s final. Send the address.”

Then she ended the call.

Zhan Rao stared at the phone.

Her anger boiled up. “What’s going on? Why are they suddenly so harsh?”

They only acted like this when she had done something wrong as a kid. Why today? She had done nothing wrong.

Jiang Yun also did not understand why Uncle and Auntie Zhan reacted that way.

“In that case, maybe explain things to them clearly another time. Then you can visit again.”

Zhan Rao sighed deeply. Her heart was filled with resentment.

Jiang Yun could not help but laugh. “You look more disappointed than me. Weren’t you the one who wanted to stay? Shouldn’t I be the one feeling let down?”

Zhan Rao rolled her eyes. “So I should be happy to leave, right? Fine. I’ll leave cheerfully. That way my parents get what they want and so do you. Clearly, you didn’t really want me to stay.”

She huffed and grabbed her bag, pretending to storm off.

Jiang Yun laughed and hugged her from behind. “Alright, alright. I was just joking. Of course I wanted you to stay. But your parents said no. There’s nothing we can do. The future is long. After you go home, don’t argue with them. Okay?”

Zhan Rao understood.

Even if she did not know why her parents had changed their minds, she knew she had to carefully manage their impression of Jiang Yun. She wanted to protect their future.

“Don’t worry. I get it.”

After a pause, she looked at Jiang Yun with a pitiful expression. “Can I eat before I go?”

Jiang Yun looked at her and burst out laughing. “Of course.”

This girl really was too adorable.
