The Cannon Fodder Stole the Male Lead’s Script GL - Chapter 51
Xin Keke had no idea what Zhan Rao and Tong Xue had discussed. She only remembered what Jiang Yun had said. If someone were not a complete fool, they would understand her feelings. In other words, Tong Xue probably already knew how she felt.
And Tong Xue was so gentle with her. Maybe she also had feelings for her.
Then all she needed was a chance to confess.
Her parents had always encouraged her to pursue whatever she wanted boldly. She believed the same. If she liked Tong Xue, then she should boldly chase after her.
She decided to do it on her birthday party.
When she returned home and shared her idea with her parents, they were both completely stunned and widened their eyes in disbelief.
“Sweetheart, you want to throw a birthday party? Seriously? You’re not joking with Mom, right?” Lan Meijuan was shocked and thrilled at the same time.
Ever since her own girlhood, she had dreamed of holding a birthday party like the ones in Disney cartoons. She imagined herself as a princess, admired by everyone, the shining star of a grand party full of handsome boys and beautiful girls. Then, she would meet her prince, and the two would hold hands and dance a breathtaking waltz under everyone’s gaze.
From then on, they would live happily ever after in love and harmony.
But reality turned out very differently. Her father went bankrupt, and she ended up selling pork for a living. She became the queen of punches on Fourteenth Street, and her birthdays became all about pork dumplings and braised pork, celebrated at the dumpling shop across from their butcher stall.
The guests at her birthday parties were not beautiful and elegant people, but a bunch of little punks from Fourteenth Street who called her boss. Some had dyed yellow hair and others varied in height and build, creating an overall chaotic appearance.
She did meet someone she liked back then. He had been a pale and skinny young guy, unlike the rest of the street punks. But after twenty years, he had nothing left except his shy personality. He had become a nobody.
After giving birth to her daughter, her princess dream came back. She told herself it did not matter if she could not be a princess herself, as long as her daughter could be. But fate played another joke. Her daughter turned out to be someone who did not like making a fuss about anything. Not only did she never want a birthday party, she would not even allow her to throw a big dinner for relatives.
“Sweetheart, you’re really, really not tricking Mom this time?”
Lan Meijuan clutched her chest excitedly, confirming again and again.
“Mom, don’t worry. I’m not lying. I really want to throw a birthday party. I’d like it to be a bit fancy, although I probably won’t invite too many classmates.”
After Xin Keke nodded her head several times, her mother finally sighed with relief.
“That’s fine. You decide how many guests to invite. Leave everything else to me.”
Lan Meijuan rushed into the study, excitedly, and came back with a big pink notebook. She opened it. Inside were all kinds of Disney princess stickers. The lines were wavy, and the whole page looked way too flashy. It totally clashed with the image of Xin Keke’s mom in a leopard print dress and high heels.
“Tell me, sweetheart, what do you want? I’ll write everything down.”
“Then, your Mom handles the venue decoration. Dad can take care of the cake and snacks, alright?” said Xin Keke’s dad, not wanting to be left out. Then he added, “And the birthday dress for our sweetheart.”
“Right, and let’s buy a nice bag for her too.”
“The dress has to be pink.”
“No, pink isn’t right for a high school girl. Go with dark green. Our daughter has fair skin, so that color will make her look even fairer. I know a designer. I’ll ask her.”
The couple discussed everything with joy and excitement.
“Mom, I have only one request. Besides the main venue, can we set up a small scenic area on the rooftop? I want a quiet place to be with my friends. It doesn’t have to be noisy, but it has to feel a little romantic.”
After Xin Keke said that, her cheeks immediately turned red.
Her parents exchanged a look and understood instantly.
Lan Meijuan embraced the pink notebook tightly against her chest while wearing an expression of pure joy and pride. “Oh, our little sweetheart is in love, isn’t she?”
She reached out and pinched her daughter’s cheek.
Xin Keke’s face turned even redder.
“Mom, what are you saying…”
Her father teased too. “Sweetheart, were you planning to hide this from us? Wanting it romantic and private. Are you going to confess to the one you like?”
Xin Keke turned crimson and shouted, “Dad! Mom!”
“Alright, alright, Dad won’t ask anymore. Our sweetheart is getting shy.” He made a funny face at her mom.
Xin Keke blushed even harder.
Her mom smiled from ear to ear. “Alright, we won’t ask. This is your personal matter. But sweetheart, go for it. I will definitely help you create a beautiful confession spot.”
“Mom!”
Feeling overwhelmed, Xin Keke covered her face and ran upstairs.
Her parents sat close together with their heads leaning toward each other as they watched their daughter run upstairs and felt their hearts melt with affection.
“This is so nice.”
“I really hope she succeeds. I can’t wait to see who our Keke likes.”
Xin Keke rushed into her room and shut the door. She leaned against it, her hand covering her wildly beating heart, which felt like it might burst from her chest.
She took a deep breath and sat at her desk.
After a few seconds of silence, her racing heart slowly calmed down.
She opened the drawer and pulled out a stack of handmade cards.
After finishing all the others, she paused for a moment before picking her favorite pen and using her favorite sticker from Cardcaptor Sakura.
She stuck a small cartoon Sakura next to the name at the top. She placed a sticker of Tomoyo beside her signature at the bottom of the card.
In between, the name Tong Xue was designed in a special way.
She was an art student, but she specialized in music, not drawing. The two characters for Tong Xue were a design she had spent two weeks working on before finalizing.
She hoped Tong Xue would like it.
After finishing the card, Xin Keke looked at it, silently repeating her wish. Then she tucked the card carefully into her backpack.
Early Friday morning, students from Class 1, Class 18, and a few others found a delicate invitation on their desks. When they opened it, everyone became excited.
“It’s Xin Keke’s birthday? Oh my gosh, that’s awesome.”
“I’ve been suffocating from all the pressure this month. Finally, I can breathe a little.”
Exams would begin next Wednesday. Class 18 was an advanced class but had not performed well last time, so the teachers had turned up the pressure. The students were overwhelmed.
Zhan Rao and Tong Xue also received invitations.
But theirs looked different.
Most invitations were printed with gold-stamped names and looked formal. Theirs, however, looked more childish. They were clearly handmade, with everything written by hand.
“Wow, yours are so special. Keke is really playing favorites.”
A close classmate peeked over, saw their invitations were different, and immediately called out. She even reached out to take the cards from their hands and opened them.
“Wow. So pretty. This is seriously biased. That Tomoyo sticker is so fancy. I want one too.”
“Sticker? What sticker? Why doesn’t Zhan Rao’s have one?”
The classmate holding Zhan Rao’s invitation was confused.
She looked closely at hers, flipping it back and forth, and found nothing. Then she glanced over at Tong Xue’s. Sure enough, the name Tong Xue in the middle had been specially designed and was surrounded by stickers.
Next to Tong Xue’s name was Sakura.
Next to Xin Keke’s name was Tomoyo.
“I thought Zhan Rao’s and Tong Xue’s were the same, but apparently not. Xin Keke is really good to Tong Xue.”
Tong Xue heard the comment, took the invitation from her classmate, and opened it. She immediately saw how different it was. Her name had been carefully designed. It was clear a lot of effort had gone into it.
The Sakura sticker was probably there because she had once mentioned she liked Cardcaptor Sakura. Xin Keke had said she liked it too.
They had once talked late into the night about that anime, unwilling to go to sleep.
Zhan Rao, sitting beside her, instantly understood what was going on.
Meanwhile, other classmates had started whispering.
“Does Keke have special feelings for Tong Xue?”
“Didn’t she admit to liking Li Yue before?”
“She likes girls?”
Hearing those strange tones, Zhan Rao quickly waved them off.
“What’s going on in your heads? It was Tong Xue who pulled Keke out of the restroom and took her to the hospital. They grew up together. Of course Keke would treat her differently.”
“And when did Keke ever admit she liked Li Yue? That was all just your speculation. At most, it was friendly admiration.”
“Alright, enough. Go study. Mr. Wang will be here soon for the dictation quiz. If you mess it up, don’t come begging me for help.”
Zhan Rao drove them all off in a few short sentences.
As soon as they heard about the dictation quiz, the group scattered like birds. Everyone hurried back to memorize a few more words.
Zhan Rao turned back, put away her invitation, and opened her book. She noticed Tong Xue was still staring at her invitation.
“Tong Xue?”
Tong Xue did not respond.
She called again.
Tong Xue finally came back to her senses, put the invitation away, and began reviewing as if nothing had happened.
