Just moments ago, Yan Kuo had been full of pride, thinking he was about to complete his mission. But the moment his voice shouting “Mom” echoed over the sports field again and again, his mind went completely blank. All he could hear was a roaring in his ears and the pounding of his own frantic heartbeat. He did not even have time to wonder who had broadcast his voice or who had set him up.

One thought took over his mind. It was over.

To make things worse, the system notification rang in his head with a sense of irony.

[Ding~ Congratulations, Host. Task #Kneel and Sincerely Call the Heroine ‘Mom’ has been completed. Luck Value +2.]

[Your current total Luck Value is: 2.]

Yan Kuo was speechless.

This was the first time he had completed a task using his own wit and abilities, but…

He kept his head down and peeked out between his arms to gauge the expressions of those around him. Everyone looked stunned, confused, completely caught off guard.

The air on the sports field felt frozen.

Students from Class 1 and Class 18 of Yinchuan High School did not even dare to breathe too loudly.

This was the highlight of their high school lives. Every second of this moment would forever be a bragging point whenever they looked back on these days. It would become part of their treasured memories, the kind of story that would be brought up again and again during reunions.

In the future, they would proudly say at dinner tables and class gatherings, “I was there when a student at our school called the goddess of Yinchuan High ‘Mom’ in front of everyone. That scene was unforgettable.”

They were still young now, and they could only vaguely sense how precious this memory would be. They focused all their attention to absorb it, committing every detail to memory.

Finally, the deafening echo on the field faded away.

Just as everyone waited to see what Yan Kuo would do, Zhan Rao, who had been standing frozen for a long time, was the first to speak.

Her delicate, doll-like face shimmered under the light of the field lamps, but her expression showed deep discomfort.

“Ah, Yan Kuo, I never imagined… you actually had this kind of intention…”

Indeed, who could have expected it?

He said he liked her, but it turned out he did not mean he wanted her to be his girlfriend. He wanted her to be his mom.

When he said he could not look away from her since he first saw her, it did not mean he was smitten. It meant he thought she was mom material.

When he asked for a chance to be together, he was not talking about a romantic relationship. He meant he wanted to be her devoted son, sharing a deep and eternal bond.

He promised to make her the happiest woman in the world. Who said a mother could not be the happiest woman?

Everyone at Yinchuan High had been thinking too narrowly.

Zhan Rao continued, “Although I’m touched by your sense of filial piety, I’m still young. I can’t handle having such a grown-up son. So, I’m sorry… we can’t be mother and son. We can only be schoolmates.”

She took two steps back and gave a polite bow to Yan Kuo, who was still kneeling on the ground.

“Really sorry, Yan Kuo.”

Then she turned and walked away, bathed in a soft glow under everyone’s gaze.

Yan Kuo stayed on his knees, gripping the grass with reddened eyes.

Just then, the bell signaling the end of class rang out.

Students poured out from the school building.

Yan Kuo snapped out of his daze.

Without saying a word, he stood up, kicked the bouquet of roses aside, and walked out of the crowd with a dark face and red-rimmed eyes.

Once outside the school gates, he got into the waiting car.

He slumped into the back seat, covering his face, silent.

“Jiang Yun!”

After slipping away from the crowd, Zhan Rao ran straight toward Jiang Yun with excitement written all over her face.

When she reached her, she took a deep breath of fresh air, exhaled slowly, and felt completely refreshed.

Her eyes sparkled with admiration. “Was it you who made Yan Kuo’s voice play through the loudspeakers just now? How did you do it?!”

Jiang Yun smiled and pressed a finger to her lips in a “shush” gesture.

Zhan Rao immediately understood and quickly closed her mouth.

Jiang Yun patted her cheek affectionately, then reached out her hand. Zhan Rao took it without hesitation. Before the other students came out of the building, the two of them had already dashed out of the school.

Yan Kuo sat gloomily in the car for a while, then looked up just in time to see the Jiang family’s Bentley drive past his car.

Through the open back window, he clearly saw the two girls sitting together, laughing and chatting happily.

Jiang Yun and Zhan Rao.

Their cheerful expressions stung his eyes.

They were supposed to be enemies in the storyline. Yet here they were, close as sisters.

Yan Kuo furrowed his brows.

He started thinking back. During the past two months of carrying out his missions, how many times had Jiang Yun secretly or openly sabotaged him?

And for some reason, he could not shake the feeling that Jiang Yun knew about his missions.

[System, is it possible for someone in the storyline to know about my mission?]

He poked at the system.

[No. Every system only serves its designated host. Each task is issued specifically to the individual host. Everyone in the storyline is an NPC. Unless an NPC develops consciousness, they will not show unusual behavior. But even then, they cannot read your missions. Please rest assured.]

Even after hearing this explanation, Yan Kuo could not feel at ease.

Every time he accepted a task, it seemed like Jiang Yun already knew what he was about to do.

How was he supposed to complete missions with peace of mind?

But what the system said was also true. It was nearly impossible for anyone else to detect his missions unless there was another task player in the same storyline with a system even more advanced than his.

He had already checked before entering this scenario. He was the only task player here.

There should not be another system.

And if there were, the central god system would have alerted him long ago.

So, it should not be possible.

Then why was Jiang Yun targeting him at every turn?

There must be something he did not know.

That night, Jiang Yun took Zhan Rao home. The next morning, she went to Xingfu Alley to pick her up for school again.

When she arrived downstairs at the Zhan family’s building, she not only picked up Zhan Rao but also received thanks from Zhan Rao’s parents and a homemade breakfast of steaming crystal shrimp dumplings.

Zhan Rao’s Mom had heard Jiang Yun would be coming the next morning, so she got up early to prepare them and had them steamed and ready.

It was already November, and the weather was turning chilly. Eating hot shrimp dumplings and drinking warm soy milk in the car made even their hearts feel cozy.

When they arrived at school, the two of them walked side by side through the campus.

All around them, students stared in their direction.

“So that’s Zhan Rao? The one Yan Kuo called Mom?”

“Yes, that’s her.”

“Hahaha… Yan Kuo is something else…”

Hearing all this, Zhan Rao and Jiang Yun fell silent.

Zhan Rao’s face turned bright red. She grabbed Jiang Yun and sped up toward the school building.

People along the way kept staring at her, whispering. Some even joked loudly, calling out, “Yan Kuo’s mom is here!”

Zhan Rao was furious and embarrassed.

Jiang Yun laughed so hard she nearly doubled over.

Zhan Rao stomped her foot.

“You’re still laughing? This is so humiliating! What is wrong with Yan Kuo? He went to all that trouble just to call me Mom?!”

Jiang Yun burst out laughing again. “Hahahahaha!”

“Ugh! Stop laughing already!”

But Jiang Yun could not stop.

Especially when she saw how adorably flustered and angry Zhan Rao looked. She genuinely found it cute beyond words.

Zhan Rao was beside her with rage. She wanted nothing more than to grab Yan Kuo and punch him into the ground.

“If you laugh again, I’m leaving.”

Jiang Yun kept laughing, and Zhan Rao, now furious, really turned and walked away.

Jiang Yun froze for a second.

No matter how many times she called after her, Zhan Rao would not turn back.

When Zhan Rao entered the classroom, the moment her classmates saw her, they all fell silent. Everyone looked at one another awkwardly as if they had forgotten what they were supposed to be doing.

Zhan Rao stood at the door with a dark expression and spoke in a cold tone, “No one is allowed to talk about what happened last night. And if anyone calls me Yan Kuo’s mom, don’t blame me for what happens next.”

Then she sat down at her desk.

The whole class was startled.

It seemed this was the first time they had ever seen the usually gentle and delicate Zhan Rao truly lose her temper.

Apparently, they had really pushed her too far this time.

Tong Xue had originally wanted to chat about last night, but seeing how furious Zhan Rao looked, she dared not speak.

She felt so stifled she could barely stand it.

She pulled out her phone and messaged Xin Keke instead.

She even sent her the forum post.

Xin Keke had just opened her English book to study vocabulary when her phone vibrated once, then again and again. She was puzzled, but when she opened it and saw the sender was Tong Xue, her heart skipped a beat.

Her face began to warm with excitement.

She was full of delight.

Tong Xue: Look quickly! Link: http://…

Tong Xue: I’m dying of laughter.

Tong Xue: Yan Kuo really embarrassed himself this time.

Xin Keke opened the link and immediately burst out laughing.

She turned to Jiang Yun and asked, “Did you guys go out last night so Yan Kuo could kneel and call Zhan Rao Mom?”

Jiang Yun raised an eyebrow and looked at Xin Keke’s phone.

Right on the screen was a newly pinned forum post.

[Breaking! Last night, the echo across campus was Yan Kuo, our male idol, kneeling on the sports field to call someone Mom. And the person he called Mom was actually…]

Even though the post had only been up for five minutes, it already had thousands of replies.

Clearly, everyone had heard that loud, powerful, unmistakable “Mom!” from the night before.
