The Cannon Fodder Stole the Male Lead’s Script GL - Chapter 39
Before Zhan Rao and the Yan family’s driver could react, Yan Kuo suddenly raised his head from the ground, bowed deeply once more, and shouted louder than before, “Mom!”
Even if Zhan Rao had been deaf, she would have heard him clearly.
“Who is he calling?” Zhan Rao stared at Jiang Yun, horrified.
Jiang Yun suppressed her laughter and shrugged calmly. “Who knows? Maybe he is calling you.”
Zhan Rao blurted out in disbelief, “He must be crazy!” She shivered and urged Jiang Yun to drive away quickly.
“Let’s go! Yan Kuo is clearly out of his mind!”
Jiang Yun could barely hold in her laughter. She almost burst out laughing multiple times, even felt the urge to slap the steering wheel, but she restrained herself. Following Zhan Rao’s urgent command, she shifted gears and hit the gas pedal, driving away with her passenger.
The Mercedes G-Class zoomed past Yan Kuo, who remained kneeling.
His face turned so red it looked like it was bleeding.
He had never felt so humiliated in his life.
Only after Jiang Yun’s car exited the underground parking lot did Yan Kuo slowly rise to his feet. He slumped to the ground, flushed with anger and shame.
[System, what the hell kind of task is this?]
Since the system had entered his body, this was the first time Yan Kuo had dared to question it.
The system responded mechanically.
[Tasks are carefully selected based on plot development. Optional reward tasks are chosen by the host. This system holds no responsibility.]
“Damn it! This low-grade system is going to be the death of me. What kind of reward task is this supposed to be?”
When he had been in the car and saw the task, his eyes almost popped out.
Honestly, he could have ignored such a humiliating task altogether. Worst case, it would have been marked as a failure. Other than the main romance progression tasks, he had only succeeded once at completing a non-romantic task since arriving in this world.
At first, he had been ready to fail.
But then the damn system warned him—
[This task carries a high score. The host must complete it. If the host’s Luck Points fall below -5, termination will be immediate.]
“Damn it all!”
He swore loudly. Without even thinking, his knees had hit the ground before his brain could catch up. He had lunged at the high score like a fool.
Now that he had come to his senses, he wanted nothing more than to slap himself and strangle the system for assigning such a task, although he knew that was impossible.
[So how exactly does the one-month duration work? I can’t possibly kneel and call her Mom every moment of the next two months, can I?]
He would rather be terminated.
The system suddenly went quiet.
The holographic screen spun for a long time before finally freezing and spitting out a single line of text.
[Frequency is based on the number of witnesses. If the third task is completed early, the overall task will be considered finished.]
Yan Kuo replied, [What do you mean by the number of witnesses?]
This system really was low-grade. Even the task descriptions were hard to understand.
This time, the system responded more promptly, returning to its usual cold and fluent tone.
[The number of witnesses to each completed “kneeling task” determines the time limit before the next repetition. For example, if there are three witnesses, the host must complete the next kneeling task within three days. If there are four, then within four days. If only one, then within one day.]
The system kept repeating the term “kneeling task” so often that Yan Kuo’s brain began to ache.
[So, to put it simply, I now have until three days from now which is Monday night at 9:35 to kneel and complete the task again. Is that correct?]
[Correct. If the host completes the kneeling task in front of sixty people, Task 1 will be completed immediately.]
Yan Kuo was speechless.
To hell with that!
Kneeling in front of Zhan Rao and calling her “Mom” with sixty people watching? He would rather die.
Could he even show his face after that?
The driver watched his young master from afar. One moment he looked angry, the next moment he was laughing, and then he started muttering curses to himself. The driver pulled out his phone, torn with worry, unsure if he should call the master and madam to report that their son had officially lost his mind.
——
The G-Class cruised down the road at 9:30 PM while Zhan Rao sat fuming, her face flushed with anger.
She had been cursing Yan Kuo non-stop the entire ride.
It was bad enough that he harassed them at school, but now he had even followed her to the hospital. It was beyond annoying.
Thankfully, Jiang Yun had the brilliant idea to take her out to watch a movie, which helped soothe her frustration.
And there was more.
Zhan Rao kept sneaking glances at Jiang Yun, who was behind the wheel with one hand on the steering wheel and the other resting lazily on the car window. She drove with such ease and charm that Zhan Rao’s heart raced and her cheeks burned.
It felt like they were on a secret date.
They were even wearing matching outfits.
They wore identical qipao dresses, one in black and one in white.
No matter how she looked at it, they truly resembled a couple.
The romantic atmosphere made Zhan Rao hope that this moment would never end.
“What’s wrong?”
As Zhan Rao’s heart fluttered, Jiang Yun’s thoughts gradually came into focus and she turned to face her with a gentle gaze.
“Are you carsick? Feeling unwell? Should I slow down?”
Zhan Rao quickly shook her head. “No, no!”
Her eyes met Jiang Yun’s, and she saw the affectionate gaze that curved gently at the corners. Jiang Yun’s slightly wavy seaweed-colored hair blew about in the wind from the open window, adding an almost fragile and enchanting quality to her already stunning face.
Zhan Rao felt like she could barely breathe.
Jiang Yun’s beauty, no matter the time or place, always hit her like a thunderbolt.
“I’m not carsick.” But I can’t tell you it’s because I’m overwhelmed by how pretty you are.
She took a few deep breaths to calm herself, then asked, “What movie are we going to watch?”
“Secret Lover.”
Zhan Rao’s eyes widened.
Secret Lover was a taboo romance film. The story centered on a young stepmother and her stepdaughter, who had just entered high school.
On the day the female lead married the stepdaughter’s father, he died in an accident before the marriage certificate was even finalized. Instead of abandoning her, the female lead worked hard to support her stepdaughter through school.
After three years of living together, their relationship began to change. However, because of their gender and roles, they were drawn to each other yet restrained themselves. In the end, societal pressures kept them apart until death.
The movie’s sensitive subject matter and ethical implications had stirred controversy during its promotions. It had even been delayed multiple times before finally getting screened.
Zhan Rao was not particularly concerned about the film’s plot or quality. What shocked her was that Jiang Yun had chosen this film for them to see together!
Even though she had just begun to suspect that Jiang Yun might return her feelings, this felt like a bold move. Bringing her to see a movie like this right away?
It was hard not to feel flustered…
Zhan Rao covered her face with joy as her heart filled with happiness.
Jiang Yun noticed her reaction.
“Ah, sorry. I didn’t ask if you wanted to see this. If you don’t like it, we can watch something else,” Jiang Yun offered. After all, Zhan Rao was the female lead and had originally not been interested in women.
Bringing her to a film with such sensitive themes might make her uncomfortable.
“No, not at all!” Zhan Rao quickly waved her hands. “I really like it!”
Jiang Yun studied her for a moment and saw no sign of resistance. She finally relaxed.
They reached the underground parking lot, and Jiang Yun parked the car. She and Zhan Rao took the elevator up to the cinema. Jiang Yun turned to her.
“Wait here. I’ll go get the tickets, popcorn, and soda. Do you want anything else?”
Zhan Rao shook her head.
As Jiang Yun walked away, Zhan Rao suddenly rushed after her, grabbed her hand, and smiled sweetly. “I’ll go with you.”
Jiang Yun paused and raised an eyebrow. “Okay.”
She flipped her hand and gently enclosed Zhan Rao’s hand in hers.
She even gave it a little squeeze.
Yes, Zhan Rao’s hand was definitely smaller than hers.
They bought popcorn, soda, self-heating hotpot, spicy skewers, and even instant hotpot, all of which surprised Zhan Rao.
Zhan Rao was baffled as she watched Jiang Yun add items to the order.
Jiang Yun merely said, “I was a little hungry.”
Zhan Rao was stunned. It was no wonder she liked this woman so much because her tastes were truly unique.
Although… would they get in trouble for eating hotpot in a theater?
They entered the theater, heading straight for the last row. Their seats were in the center of the final row. It was a small theater, so the view was just right.
Once seated, Jiang Yun calmly opened her freshly heated hotpot.
Zhan Rao instantly grew nervous and looked around. Fortunately, there were not many people in their theater. Otherwise, someone might have followed the smell and come over to complain.
But that was strange. Wasn’t this movie supposed to be popular? Why was the room so empty? She thought she had overheard someone saying the tickets were sold out earlier.
“Don’t worry. No one else will come sit here,” Jiang Yun reassured her.
“Really?”
Zhan Rao was skeptical, but she waited. Even after the movie started, no one else entered.
Since they were not disturbing anyone, she had no reason to hold back.
Her eyes sparkled with delight.
She had to admit that Jiang Yun was amazing.
Eating hotpot in a theater? Brilliant!
As they watched and ate, someone suddenly tapped their shoulders.
“Can you not eat such smelly food in public? You’re bothering others.”
Two girls stood before them. One had long hair and wore a cap. The other had short hair and was taller, standing with her hands in her pockets. The long-haired one glared at them, her voice low and strained in a poor attempt to sound polite.
Zhan Rao froze, holding her chopsticks mid-air. She glanced nervously at Jiang Yun.
Didn’t Jiang Yun say no one else would come?
Now what?
Jiang Yun did not even lift her head. She kept eating.
The long-haired girl grew angry at the lack of response and raised her voice.
“I’m talking to you! How can you be so rude? This smell is awful!”
“Oh? And who exactly am I bothering?” Jiang Yun finally looked up, calm and unfazed.
The long-haired girl was momentarily stunned. She was clearly taken aback by Jiang Yun’s looks. A flicker of admiration passed through her eyes.
But then she saw her companion staring even harder, their hand tugging at her to stop talking.
This only made her angrier. “You know it bothers people, yet you still eat it? Have you no shame?”
Zhan Rao’s expression darkened.
She stood up abruptly and stared at her. “What did you just say?”
Jiang Yun sensed Zhan Rao’s rising anger. She quickly grabbed her hand to calm her, then turned to the two girls with a faint smile.
“You said we were bothering others. Then the people affected should at least be actual audience members, right? Are you two?”
They paused, taken aback.
The long-haired girl flushed red. “What are you implying? Of course we are!”
Jiang Yun shrugged and pulled out her phone. In front of them, she made a call.
“Hello? There are two people in Theater 5 who snuck in without tickets.”
The long-haired girl immediately panicked. The short-haired one also looked startled and awkward.
Trying to defuse the situation, the short-haired girl said, “Hey, don’t say that. We have tickets. We’re just sitting here. Whatever, forget it. If you want to eat, fine. We’ll just sit farther away.”
She tried to pull her partner away, but the long-haired girl resisted. “She says we snuck in and we’re just going to let her? Where’s her proof?”
Jiang Yun ignored her and continued eating.
Three minutes later, the long-haired girl had no fight left in her.
“Excuse me, can you please come with us? Someone reported you for sneaking in. We need to check your tickets,” said a cinema staff member.
The pair clearly panicked.
“What are you talking about? She is eating hotpot in here and causing a disturbance for everyone. And you’re accusing us of sneaking in?”
The staff remained calm. “First, if you want to prove you did not sneak in, please show your tickets. I’m confident you cannot. Second, eating hotpot is only prohibited when it disturbs others but the customer here rented this theater for two consecutive showings and paid for cleaning. So she can eat whatever she likes.”
The long-haired girl was so shocked that she could not comprehend what had just been said.
“What do you mean?”
The short-haired girl had already figured it out. She quickly apologized.
“Sorry, we really didn’t buy tickets. We won’t do it again. We’ll pay the fine, ten times the normal ticket price. Please accept our apologies!”
As they were pulled away, the long-haired girl protested, “Why are you apologizing? She’s the one eating stinky food—”
The short-haired girl had had enough. “Are you stupid? She rented the entire theater. Two showings. One for eating, one for airing it out. What right do you have to complain? If you had the money, you could do the same. You didn’t even buy a ticket, and you’re still yapping?”
The long-haired girl fell silent.
Once they were gone, Zhan Rao sat there, stunned.
The short-haired girl’s words echoed in her mind.
She had reserved two entire showings, one to enjoy her meal and another to allow the smell to dissipate.
The person she liked really was one of a kind!
