The Cannon Fodder Stole the Male Lead’s Script GL - Chapter 20
A group of classmates entered the haunted house. Because there were many participants, they were allowed to freely form groups of seven to choose a script and begin exploring.
Jiang Yun was only familiar with Zhan Rao on the team, so she naturally chose to stay by her side. Tong Xue had been loudly insisting that she wanted to get to know Miss Jiang, so she clung to the two of them and refused to be separated.
As for the others, while many hoped to team up with Zhan Rao, seeing Jiang Yun in the same group made them hesitate. They backed off without voicing their wishes.
“These people are ridiculous. Jiang Yun is so pretty. What are they even afraid of?” Tong Xue muttered.
Zhan Rao nudged her, hinting that Jiang Yun was right there and she should watch her words.
Only then did Tong Xue realize her mistake. She scratched her head with a sheepish smile and said, “Ah, Jiang Yun, I didn’t mean it like that.”
Jiang Yun smiled and shook her head. “It’s alright. I know you didn’t mean anything bad.”
“Why don’t the three of us team up then?” Zhan Rao looked at them with big sparkling eyes full of expectation.
In truth, she did not want it to be three people. She would rather it be just her and Jiang Yun. Even if Tong Xue was her best friend, right now, she felt like an extra.
“But this room needs seven people to start,” Tong Xue said, sounding a bit unhappy.
Jiang Yun nodded in agreement. “To make it more fun, we should have more people.” She gently patted Zhan Rao’s small head.
The warm palm on her head gave Zhan Rao a comforting feeling, like a child being soothed. She could not help smiling. “Alright then, although that’s settled, we still need to decide who else to include.?”
“How about joining our group?” Yan Kuo stepped in and smiled at Zhan Rao.
Zhan Rao’s face froze as soon as she saw him.
Tong Xue quickly responded, “Sure, sure. Yan Kuo, you guys don’t have a team yet?”
Cai Minhao replied, “It’s not that we don’t have anyone. It’s just that too many people want to join us. Choosing is a hassle.” With Yan Kuo around, girls lined up to join their team.
Zhan Rao rolled her eyes. “If so many people want in, you should just form your own team. Why bother coming over here?” She disliked Yan Kuo. She did not want to see him, talk to him, or have him near Jiang Yun.
Yan Kuo raised an eyebrow at her reaction. “It seems like you really don’t want to team up with me, Classmate Zhan?”
Zhan Rao was ready to retort and call him out for being shameless, but Jiang Yun grabbed her hand. “If they want to team up, let’s just do it.”
Zhan Rao turned to Jiang Yun in surprise, only to see her eyes were fixed on Yan Kuo.
A sour feeling rose in Zhan Rao’s chest. Her breath caught, and her hands clenched.
Did Jiang Yun still have feelings for Yan Kuo?
But Jiang Yun had not been thinking about that at all. She knew the script required these characters to be together. No matter how much she refused or tried to pull Zhan Rao aside, they would still end up running into Yan Kuo.
This was how the plot worked.
So, she did not bother resisting and simply agreed to team up. It would make things smoother.
She also wanted to see just how unpleasant this world’s story could get, and how far she could avoid the plot while staying within the rules.
“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you in there.” She patted Zhan Rao’s hand gently.
Zhan Rao looked at her with curiosity. The tightness in her chest melted away. She nodded. “Alright.”
After all, Jiang Yun had already said she did not like Yan Kuo. She would trust her Sister Jiang. And besides, with her around, how could Jiang Yun ever pay attention to that gross clown of a guy?
As the five of them headed to the waiting room for the haunted house, two more people came running over.
“Um, can we join your team?” Li Yue asked nervously.
All five turned their heads. Feeling the weight of everyone’s gaze, Li Yue lowered her head in embarrassment as her cheeks turned bright red. “We… we didn’t know where to go. Everyone else… everyone else seemed to be mocking me… I…”
Her voice trembled. She was on the verge of tears.
Zhan Rao watched her from the side, feeling utterly disgusted.
If she was truly afraid of ridicule, she would have left long ago. Why was she still here?
What a fake little flower.
She looked at Jiang Yun with sympathy. How painful it must be to realize the person you trusted turned out to be like this.
Li Yue waited for a long time but did not get the answer she wanted. She finally looked up, casting her gaze toward Jiang Yun. Her voice was pitiful. “Jiang Yun, you’re not agreeing because of the memorization thing last time, right? You’re still mad at me?”
Xin Keke scowled. “Yueyue, let’s go. They don’t want to team with us. We can come play next time. If you want a bigger group, I can bring some of my bros and sisters.”
She reached out to drag Li Yue away, but Li Yue stubbornly refused to move. She said it would be a pity to leave after coming all this way. Yet no one wanted to include them. Even someone like Jiang Yun was now turning her nose up at them. Xin Keke had never felt so humiliated.
She could not wait to leave.
But Li Yue refused.
“Keke, I can’t go. Jiang Yun and I had a falling out over that memorization incident. I want to use this chance to make up with her. Please, stay with me, just this once.”
Xin Keke was speechless.
She could not stand Li Yue begging like this.
When those teary eyes looked at her so pleadingly, Xin Keke felt like if Li Yue asked for the stars, she would do her best to get them.
Gritting her teeth, she held back her temper.
“Fine. But if you want to make up with her, you still have to see if she’s willing.”
The pair worked in tandem. Soon, the other students started looking their way and whispering among themselves.
Some even started gossiping about the rumors of Jiang Yun and Li Yue nearly being accused of cheating during that memorization incident.
A few even sided with Li Yue, calling her generous and kind.
Zhan Rao, watching the whole thing unfold, was in utter disbelief.
Where did these shameless besties come from? Clearly, no one wanted them, and they were shamelessly trying to force themselves into the group. Jiang Yun and the others had every right to refuse. But thanks to their smooth talking, now it looked like Li Yue was just humbly seeking reconciliation. If Jiang Yun didn’t agree, she would look like the petty one.
Zhan Rao wanted to applaud their blame-shifting skills.
But she could not act out.
When she was with Jiang Yun, she had to restrain her intense emotions. When it came to Yan Kuo, she could manage controlled sarcasm. But in front of a crowd, she could not behave freely.
Otherwise, she would have rushed forward and slapped those two pathetic girls across the face.
“Jiang Yun, this is a completely separate matter. If someone you dislike wants to latch onto you, you have every right to say no. Don’t let anyone guilt-trip you into accepting.”
She reminded her kindly and subtly threw the term “moral blackmail” into the air.
Li Yue’s eyes darkened.
Jiang Yun looked at Li Yue and Yan Kuo one by one. She then smiled and squeezed Zhan Rao’s hand. “It’s alright. I’m not so narrow-minded as some people think.”
Besides, when people come begging, there is no reason to turn them away.
She also wanted to see if the plot would really unfold the way she suspected.
Their group now consisted of Jiang Yun, Zhan Rao, Tong Xue, Yan Kuo, Cai Minhao, Xin Keke, and Li Yue.
After waiting ten minutes in the lobby, they finally entered the haunted house through an old, worn-out wooden door.
Beyond the door was a damp, moldy corridor with arched ceilings and faded wall paintings.
Yan Kuo, considering himself the male lead and trying to win Zhan Rao’s favor, grabbed a flashlight and took the lead. He pulled Cai Minhao with him. Strangely enough, Cai Minhao had his eyes shut tight, clutching Yan Kuo’s hand in fear.
Tong Xue snorted at him and followed behind.
Li Yue and Xin Keke trailed behind her. Jiang Yun and Zhan Rao brought up the rear.
Jiang Yun examined the surroundings. Aside from the many broken doors, there were some gross, blood-stained rags, fake skeletons, coffins, knives, and candles. All of it was clearly staged to create a creepy atmosphere. There was really nothing scary.
It was just a bit dark.
She turned to Zhan Rao and whispered, “Are you scared?”
Zhan Rao’s bright eyes sparkled like stars. “Not at all. It’s just like you said. So thrilling.”
Jiang Yun stared at her and thought, Hmmm. This doesn’t match the script. Wasn’t the female lead supposed to be terrified of ghosts? That’s why she got locked in a cage by the evil female villain, trembling and pitiful, waiting for the male lead to come save her?
“You’re really not scared?”
Zhan Rao shook her head. “Nope. Actually, I think the setup is kind of lame. Look at that coffin. It looks brand new. They should age it a bit. Maybe smear some corpse oil. And that bloody rag? The color is all wrong, and there’s no rotten smell.”
She pointed around with her little hand.
She was not just observant but he also looked unimpressed.
Jiang Yun was speechless.
Is this really the timid, ghost-fearing, gentle female lead the script described?
She now had reason to wonder if Zhan Rao ever did get locked in a cage, would this girl actually be too excited to scream?
Did the writer of this world’s script even consider the character personalities while writing this?
