It was almost laughable. Chen Shuo was a police officer, a representative of justice, yet because of his lingering anxiety, he had remained alone all these years. No friends, no lovers, and he even refused to have a partner.

His colleagues said he was a proud lone wolf who didn’t need a partner dragging him down. He never attended group dinners or participated in any team activities. Because he didn’t fit in, he gradually became an outcast among his peers.

Chen Shuo knew that Chen Yan’s disappearance didn’t mean an end. As long as she wasn’t found, he would live in fear forever.

If he wanted a normal life, he had to find Chen Yan. If Chen Yan were still alive, he would have to see her in person. If she were dead, he would have to see her corpse.

Otherwise, nothing would ever end.

After a long silence, Chen Shuo said, “I found a case file from twenty years ago about a doctor surnamed Song who was murdered. He deceived women into bearing his children, attempting to use the organs of blood-related offspring to replace his own failing ones.”

Chen Shuo paused before continuing, “At the time, he also lived in Yuhua Community and was her neighbor. The officers who handled the case then dug up the remains of four children in her yard. I never imagined that my leaving would make her become so utterly deranged.”

Lu Sheng pulled a pack of strawberry-flavored gummies from his pocket. He unwrapped one and popped it into his mouth, watching the scene like a spectator, as if none of it concerned him. If Chen Shuo had phrased things better, Lu Sheng might even have applauded him.

Chen Shuo lifted his eyes and stared at Lu Sheng for a long time, perhaps searching his face for a trace of resemblance to Chen Yan. Fortunately, Lu Sheng didn’t look like her at all.

Yet the guilt in his heart did not lessen in the slightest. He said, “I’m sorry.”

If he hadn’t cowardly run away back then, perhaps none of what followed would have happened. Those four children might not have been buried like trash in the dirt.

Chen Shuo sat on the bench, his figure slouched in defeat. He had no strength to sit upright, nor could he find any reason to ignite his will to live. He raised his hand to his forehead, let out a long sigh, and said slowly, “If you want, you can go ahead and do it now.”

Lu Sheng asked, “What did you do with the gift I gave you?”

Chen Shuo didn’t respond.

In the distance, the sound of a bus arriving at the stop echoed.

Death did not come for Chen Shuo; instead, he heard the sound of the boy’s footsteps running away.

Lu Sheng shouted, “Yao Yao!”

Bai Yao had just gotten off the bus when Lu Sheng threw his arms around her tightly. She raised her hand and pushed his face away in annoyance. “You’re going to strangle me!”

Lu Sheng was like a big golden retriever. Even when his owner pushed him away, he insisted on rubbing against her, exclaiming dramatically, “Yao Yao, I missed you so much!”

Every day when Bai Yao came home from school, he would say this. It was a wonder he never got tired of it.

As soon as she saw Chen Shuo sitting on the bench, she asked, “Why is he here?”

Lu Sheng replied, “No idea.”

Seeing Chen Shuo always reminded Bai Yao of Chen Yan. She tugged Lu Sheng’s hand to head back, saying, “Let’s go home. I brought your favorite Kende Duck today.”

Lu Sheng’s eyes lit up. “Yao Yao, you’re the best!”

At that moment, the glow of the setting sun faded, and night had fallen.

Chen Shuo watched the young couple’s silhouettes disappear. He sat there for a long time before slowly realizing that Lu Sheng probably didn’t intend to kill him, which somehow made his sense of defeat even worse.

How much of a failure must he be that even the ghosts and monsters didn’t think his life was worth taking?

Chen Shuo scratched his head, slowly stood up, walked to the roadside, and got into his car.

There weren’t many cars on the road, and the streetlights were dim, just like his life.

Lu Sheng had just asked him what he did with the gift, but Chen Shuo didn’t answer because he couldn’t bring himself to say it.

In fear and panic, he had buried that box in the ground.

For the past twenty years, he hadn’t had a good night’s sleep. He had thought that by personally putting an end to his nightmare, he would no longer need sleeping pills and could sleep peacefully on his own. But he still couldn’t sleep.

The nightmare was still there.

He was a coward and would never be able to defeat that nightmare. Perhaps this was heaven’s way of telling him that a failure like him never deserved to live in this world.

His grip on the steering wheel tightened, and his foot pressed harder on the accelerator. He stared fixedly at the curve of the mountain road ahead, with a self-destructive look reaching its peak in his eyes.

It wasn’t until the ringtone on his phone rang persistently for a long time that he was pulled back to his senses.

The car stopped by the roadside. The hollowness in his eyes slowly began to gain focus. After a long pause, he picked up the phone. A hoarse voice came through. “Who is it?”

An excited voice answered on the other end, “Officer Chen!!!”

Chen Shuo glanced at the contact name on the screen. “So it’s Miss He.”

He Cai: “I’m in trouble right now and I need your help!”

He let out a short laugh. “Oh, really?”

He Cai sounded annoyed. “I said I’m in trouble. What are you laughing at?”

Chen Shuo: “I just didn’t expect anyone in this world to still remember me.”

He Cai didn’t bother wasting words with him. “I remember your license plate. Were you the one speeding just now? Come back and save me. I’m waiting for you on the roadside!”

To be honest, He Cai didn’t have the best personality either. She had the temper of a spoiled rich girl, and even when asking for help, she didn’t know how to speak politely.

But He Cai never looked for problems within herself. Rather than draining her energy with self-blame, she preferred to criticize others for lacking judgment.

Dongfang Xuan fiddled with his broken-down luxury car but still couldn’t fix it. He walked over to the increasingly impatient He Cai. “I already called. The car repair company will be here soon.”

He Cai glared at Dongfang Xuan. “If it weren’t for you dragging me out to the villa, I wouldn’t even be in this mess! Now look, the car broke down, and there’s nothing around for miles. Being with you is pure bad luck!”

She stomped her foot in frustration. “Dongfang Xuan, I want to call off the engagement!”

This line used to always come from Dongfang Xuan. Now that it was He Cai saying it, he felt especially uncomfortable. “Don’t say things in anger. Calling off an engagement isn’t something you can just do on a whim.”

He Cai sneered, “It’s only because she’s gone. If she were still here, you definitely would have been eager to break off the engagement with me a long time ago.”

Dongfang Xuan: “I’ve already told you, I don’t have feelings for Su Youyou anymore. Why do you keep bringing her up?”

He Cai: “Did I say her name? You were the one who brought her up, weren’t you?”

Dongfang Xuan couldn’t win the argument. He rarely softened his tone, but was just about to try coaxing her when a black car pulled up beside them.

The window rolled down, revealing a young man with a world-weary expression. He looked lazily at He Cai and said with amusement, “The trouble you mentioned was just a fight with your boyfriend?”
