- Chapter 98 - Lu Sheng Side Story (Part One)
At dusk, the park on the outskirts was almost deserted.
Chen Shuo sat on a bench, smoking one cigarette after another, as if this could suppress the restlessness in his heart.
Today, as usual, he wore a gray trench coat, still appearing as unkempt as ever. The dark circles under his eyes were even heavier than before, and the stubble on his chin hadn’t been shaved. He looked utterly worn out and disheveled.
Who would believe that he was actually a police officer?
It was unclear how much time had passed when a young man with orange hair sat down on the bench across from him.
Lu Sheng leaned lazily against the backrest, his left leg resting on his right, toes swinging slightly. He sat in a slouched posture, listening to music through his earpiece, a faint smile on his lips, though his eyes were full of impatience.
Lu Sheng said lazily, “My girlfriend’s coming back soon. If you’ve got something to say, say it quick.”
Chen Shuo extinguished his cigarette and tossed it into the trash bin beside him. His face looked extremely haggard, as if he hadn’t rested well in a long time. “I received what you sent me.”
Lu Sheng grinned. “I thought you’d be so scared you’d run out of the city. Didn’t expect you’d still come looking for me.”
Chen Shuo had received the package a week earlier. A box had inexplicably appeared in his home, with a label on it showing the sender’s address as Yuhua Community.
There was no need to guess; his first thought was that it had definitely been sent by Lu Sheng.
Chen Shuo knew that once he got involved with Bai Yao, it would bring deadly consequences. So he had been prepared. He even suspected the box might contain something used to curse people.
Isn’t that how horror movies go?
The protagonist receives a creepy doll, and from then on, misfortune haunts them.
The box sitting on the floor had suddenly moved, as if something alive was inside.
Chen Shuo held his breath. He carefully opened the box, and what he saw inside became an image he would never forget for the rest of his life.
Whenever he thought about it, he couldn’t help but tremble all over.
He habitually reached for another cigarette, trying to numb himself with nicotine, but he had already smoked all the ones he brought with him today and had to give up.
Chen Shuo forced himself to calm down. He looked at the young man sitting across from him, who seemed completely non-threatening. “I think I owe you a thank you.”
Lu Sheng gave him a strange look. “You want to thank me?”
Chen Shuo said, “I finally saw her again. Everything is confirmed now. I no longer have to live every day in fear.”
The box he had received contained Chen Yan.
To be precise, an incomplete Chen Yan.
Her limbs had turned into white bones. Only her torso and head remained in a state resembling the living. Perhaps over the years, she had watched her own flesh rot away until only bones were left.
She had lost all semblance of a human being. Her sparse hair was yellow and dry, her complexion waxy and pale, and her eyes looked as though they could fall out of their sockets at any moment.
To say she was still alive would be less accurate than saying she should have died long ago.
However, the moment she saw Chen Shuo, a blazing light burst forth in her eyes, like a drowning person spotting the only piece of driftwood. She opened her mouth, as if wanting to say so much, but having lost her tongue, she could only produce shrill “ah ah” noises, unable to utter any other sound.
Over the years, Chen Shuo had investigated many strange cases and could be considered someone who had seen his fair share of storms, but when he saw Chen Yan in that moment, he still fell into a state of extreme panic and kept backing away.
Of course, he was now a fully grown man, tall and strong. He was no longer the young child who could be manipulated at will, nor the naïve adolescent. He shouldn’t be afraid.
But the memories from his childhood remained, those memories that, in his innocence, he couldn’t understand, but now, as an adult, he realized could only be described as “molestation.” These memories had become an indelible shadow ingrained in his bones.
It was like the strongest, largest, seemingly invincible beast in the world stepping on a nail, and the nail embeds itself in the sole of its foot. Even after the skin wound has healed, the flesh inside continues to rot.
Chen Shuo pressed his left hand over his right, trying to keep himself from trembling. He lowered his eyes and gave a self-mocking laugh. “She was my sister. In this world, we were supposed to be the closest people to each other. I never expected it would come to this.”
Lu Sheng sneered, “Coward.”
Chen Shuo sighed. “You’re right. I am a coward. I don’t have the courage to face the truth. All I know how to do is run away.”
Chen Shuo was raised by Chen Yan. Describing their relationship as “dependent on each other” wouldn’t be wrong. When he was a child, his entire worldview and values were shaped by Chen Yan. No matter what she did to him, he only thought it was normal.
It wasn’t until he started school, met classmates, and received knowledge from teachers that he gradually realized something was wrong between him and Chen Yan.
No matter how close siblings are, they must maintain a distance appropriate between a man and a woman.
So when he was ten, and Chen Yan tried to help him bathe, he told her it wasn’t right. His sister, who had always been gentle with him, suddenly became like a different person.
She forcefully dragged him into the bathroom, crazily telling him, “Chen Shuo, I raised you. Every inch of your body should belong to me!”
Because of this incident, Chen Yan forbade him from going back to school.
At that age, there was much Chen Shuo still didn’t understand. He only knew he wanted to return to school. So he had to pretend to be obedient and well-behaved to make Chen Yan change her mind and let him attend school again.
As Chen Shuo slowly grew up, he also tried to correct Chen Yan’s distorted thinking, but without a doubt, he failed.
Worse still, Chen Yan began using suicide as a means to threaten him.
As time passed, Chen Shuo increasingly felt powerless. Because of Chen Yan, he had no friends, no social circle of his own, and he didn’t dare speak even a word more than necessary to any woman. Otherwise, a provoked Chen Yan would lash out and hurt others.
So, he had no choice but to escape.
He deliberately applied to a university far from home. As for which university, he never told Chen Yan. One day, he simply left the Chen household without a word.
He thought leaving was the right thing to do.
He believed Chen Yan’s obsession was just temporary. Once he was gone, she would meet new people and eventually change her mindset.
But what Chen Shuo didn’t expect was that Chen Yan had suddenly disappeared twenty years ago.
The despicable thing was that Chen Shuo’s first reaction was to feel relieved that she had disappeared. Would that mean he could finally live like a normal person?
Yet that feeling of relief didn’t last long before it turned into unease. If Chen Yan had vanished, did that mean she was hiding somewhere, secretly watching him?
Just like when he was in middle and high school, she would wait and see who got close to him, then suddenly appear wielding a knife.
