Chen Shuo’s gaze was ambiguous, concealing many things that could not be easily explained. He spoke in a calm voice, “Miss Bai, I must find her. Otherwise, I will never be at peace for the rest of my life.”
Bai Yao frowned. Why did she feel like things weren’t as simple as he made them out to be?
Chen Shuo handed his business card to Bai Yao. “After talking so much with you today, I just hope that if you ever change your mind, you can contact me. And rest assured, I have no intention of hurting him. I just want a definite answer.”
At that moment, He Cai ran over in a new dress. She asked curiously, “Officer Chen, what are you doing here?”
Chen Shuo reverted to his usual unserious demeanor and laughed. “Haha, just wandering around. Didn’t expect to bump into someone I know.”
He stood up, looked at He Cai up and down, and nodded approvingly. “Not bad, this dress suits you well. It will surely captivate those young guys, making them all bow down to your pomegranate skirt.”
Instead of being pleased, He Cai rubbed her arms in disgust and stood behind Bai Yao.
Chen Shuo sensed the dislike and felt a rare moment of awkwardness and confusion.
What was wrong?
Could it be that his lines no longer work on young girls nowadays?
He Cai went to the counter to pay, then pulled Bai Yao away. Looking at the goosebumps on her arm, she clicked her tongue twice and said, “That uncle is way too greasy. I can’t take it.”
Chen Shuo glanced at the sky and sighed, “Guess I’ll spend the night at the temple again today.”
Bai Yao returned home and casually tossed the shopping bag onto the sofa. The next second, she received a call from her boyfriend.
“Yao Yao, I have to work overtime tonight. Sorry, I can’t have dinner with you.”
Bai Yao was a little unhappy. “Then come back early after you’re done.”
“I will!” Lu Sheng added with concern, “Yao Yao, if you’re scared to sleep alone tonight, go to my place and leave the lights on. I’ll be back soon.”
Bai Yao responded glumly, “Okay.”
Lu Sheng said, “Yao Yao, I love you today too. Sleep early.”
After hanging up, Bai Yao slumped onto the sofa and pulled out the business card that Chen Shuo had left. She couldn’t help but sigh—everyone has their own obsession.
It was still early, and she had nothing to do, so she decided to play a few rounds of a game. Suddenly, lightning and thunder cracked outside the window.
A notification popped up on her phone, announcing that the area would experience a heavy rainstorm with lightning tonight. Citizens were advised to stay indoors and avoid going out.
Huashi City had frequent rain with downpours every few days. She was already used to it.
Bai Yao remembered that the windows weren’t closed. She quickly got up to shut the ones in the kitchen and bathroom. The thunder and lightning outside were frequent and frightening. She drew the living room curtains.
Bai Yao was passing the stairwell on her way to the second floor when suddenly she heard a faint “crack” sound from the wooden floor beneath her feet.
A wooden door, the same color as the floor, suddenly popped open.
Thunder roared overhead, and before Bai Yao could react, she missed a step and tumbled down the pitch-black staircase. It took a while before she finally hit the ground. Lying there, she grimaced in pain, clutching her lower back and gasping continuously.
Fortunately, the stairs weren’t too steep. If there had been a few more steps, she might have passed out on the spot.
She opened her eyes to find herself surrounded by darkness, with only a faint light filtering in from the steps above.
Bai Yao remembered that this house had a basement. She had been so caught up in her relationship lately that she completely forgot to clean it.
She hurriedly got up, only to realize her entire body was sore. As she propped herself up, her hand suddenly touched something, which quickly withdrew. It gave her quite a scare.
She swiftly turned on her phone’s flashlight, and the moment the light lit up, her expression froze.
It was a child about five or six years old wearing filthy clothes, his black hair a tangled mess. His face was deathly pale, and he curled his body into a ball, staring at her with fear and tension.
He was terribly thin, nothing but skin and bones, and clearly malnourished.
Because he was so underweight, his black eyes appeared abnormally large. All the vigilance and fear in him seemed to pour out through those overly dark eyes.
What she had just touched was his foot.
There is a child hidden in my basement?!
Bai Yao panicked. Her first reaction was to call for help, but unfortunately, her phone showed no signal, and even emergency numbers couldn’t be dialed for some unknown reason.
Everything about this situation seemed to scream “strange.”
The boy still huddled in the corner, watching her like a small beast silently sizing up the strength between himself and his prey, calculating whether he had the chance to strike successfully.
At that moment, she heard movement above. It was the sound of footsteps. The only person with access to Bai Yao’s house was Lu Sheng, but these footsteps clearly weren’t his. Judging from the sound, it was a man.
Bai Yao whispered to the boy, “Don’t say anything.”
The boy stayed silent but secretly gripped something hidden in his sleeve.
Then she rummaged through the nearby clutter and found a heavy iron box of unknown purpose. Turning off her phone’s light, she hid it in the shadows.
Descending the stairs was indeed a middle-aged man. He wore a white lab coat and carried a lantern. After reaching the basement floor, he walked straight toward the boy and placed the lantern in front of the boy’s face.
The boy had been in darkness too long, and his eyes couldn’t handle the intense light. Instinctively, he turned his face away, but the man quickly grabbed his chin and forced it back.
Satisfaction flickered in the man’s murky eyes. He chuckled and said, “Almost there, almost. Very soon, your eyes will be ready to use.”
The boy squinted, seemingly looking at the man, but his gaze actually landed behind him.
Bai Yao, approaching silently, raised the object high in her hand and brought it crashing down on the man’s head.
The lantern fell from his hand. He clutched the back of his head and staggered, but before he could turn around, she struck him a second time.
This time, he finally collapsed to the ground, blood streaming from his head. However, he was still a robust adult man, and despite the fall, he didn’t lose consciousness. Instead, he grabbed Bai Yao’s leg, his cloudy eyes filled with malice.
Bai Yao was dragged by the leg and fell hard onto the ground, landing squarely on her butt. The object in her hand slipped and fell, so she simply raised her other leg and kicked, shouting, “Let go of me!”
The man slowly crawled toward her. “Who are you? How did you get into my house? You—”
Before he could finish speaking, a shard of glass stabbed directly into his neck. Blood gushed out instantly. He clutched his throat, but it was no use. He could only emit a hoarse “heh-heh” sound before falling silent.
The boy quietly watched the man lying lifeless on the floor. Once he was certain the man wouldn’t move again, his dull black eyes turned to Bai Yao.
Blood had splattered on his clothes, and from how tightly he was gripping the glass shard, his own hand was bleeding. But he seemed to feel no pain, like a soulless puppet.
Bai Yao snapped out of it and quickly stood up, rushing over to pry the broken glass from his hand. But he clutched it so tightly that she couldn’t get it out.
“It’s okay now. You’re bleeding, let go quickly!”
He stared at her for a long moment before slowly loosening his grip. The shard of glass dropped to the floor with a sharp, piercing sound.
Bai Yao picked him up and ran toward the stairs. He was so light that it barely took any effort to carry him.
The steady rhythm of her footsteps echoed as she climbed the steps. The boy listened in a daze, lifting his head to see the light drawing closer.
But in the next second, a hand gently pushed his face into her chest, blocking out the light. Just like before, he saw nothing but darkness.
Outside, thunder roared and lightning flashed, violently splitting the night sky again and again. It looked no different from the end of the world.
Inside the house, Bai Yao noticed that all the furniture had changed positions. A sense of panic rose in her chest, but she forced herself to stay calm. The hand pressing against the back of the boy’s head shifted to cover his eyes.
Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she gently said, “Open your eyes slowly. Don’t rush. That way, your eyes won’t feel uncomfortable.”
He was still in a daze but obediently followed her instructions. As her hand gradually moved away, he slowly saw the light.
Bai Yao asked, “Are you okay? Does it hurt your eyes?”
The soft light didn’t hurt.
But when his gaze settled on her face, he instinctively shut his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, her reflection appeared in his dark, glossy pupils. His throat felt even drier, and he said, “It hurts a lot.”
The night wind howled, and the rain poured harder.
Chen Shuo came out of the bathroom and found that the Buddha statue in the meditation room had fallen to the floor. The swastika symbol painted on the wall had cracked. There wasn’t a trace of light in the room, and the air was stifling.
Feeling his way to his gun, Chen Shuo still had the mind to joke, “Seriously? Not even safe here?”
As lightning flashed outside, a faint shadow in a black robe appeared in the room, slowly approaching.
Chen Shuo tensed and backed up until his back hit the wall.
With the next thunderclap, the black shadow suddenly stopped moving.
Chen Shuo was utterly on edge.
Then, the shadow suddenly raised its head and looked in a certain direction, as if sensing something. In an instant, the figure vanished into the darkness.
Blue lightning flickered again, and the room was left with only Chen Shuo.
He leaned against the wall and sighed with relief, wiping the cold sweat on his face. He silently admitted that he was only human; it would certainly be false if he said he was not afraid.
He had thought he was about to die. Why did the figure suddenly disappear?
Chen Shuo always had sharp instincts. He looked in the same direction the shadow had turned toward earlier. If he remembered correctly, Yuhua Community was that way.
So that dangerous figure disappeared in such a hurry—what was he rushing toward?
