After Dongfang Xuan returned to school, he went straight to find He Cai. As soon as he opened his mouth, he asked He Cai to stay away from Bai Yao. He Cai only replied, “Are you sick?”

No matter how hard Dongfang Xuan tried to persuade her, He Cai ignored him, and instead, she became more and more annoyed with him.

Dongfang Xuan couldn’t help but say, “Everyone around Bai Yao is crazy! You’ve seen what happened to Nangong and the others! If you don’t distance yourself from Bai Yao, one day, you might end up just like them!”

He Cai rolled her eyes without any regard for her image. “If you say everyone around Bai Yao is crazy, then I guess I’m a crazy person too!”

Dongfang Xuan was utterly helpless against the stubborn He Cai. She used to listen to him a lot, but he didn’t know when it started. He Cai had been increasingly opposing him, and in her heart, she had grown more and more impatient with him.

Dongfang Xuan was deeply frustrated.

However, He Cai soon went to find Bai Yao. “Yao Yao, does your boyfriend know a police officer named Chen Shuo?”

Bai Yao nodded. “Yes, he knows him. Why?”

He Cai frowned. “I can’t quite explain the feeling, but he seems very concerned about you and your boyfriend. The last time he drove me home, he asked a lot about your relationship, but I don’t know the details of your romance, so it was useless for him to ask me.”

Bai Yao seemed thoughtful.

He Cai curiously asked, “Do you think that police officer might have feelings for you?”

Bai Yao was silent for a moment. “How could that be? I’ve only met him once.”

He Cai thought for a moment. Chen Shuo looked very rough, not delicate at all. He certainly wasn’t Bai Yao’s type, and then she suddenly realized, “Could it be that he has feelings for your boyfriend?”

Bai Yao narrowed her eyes. She crossed her arms and seriously nodded. “It’s possible.”

He Cai was surprised and covered her mouth.

Bai Yao then asked, “When we went to the police station last time, you didn’t deny that Dongfang Xuan harassed you. He was detained for two days. Aren’t you feeling sorry for him?”

He Cai pouted. “He’s always thinking about Su Youyou, so he doesn’t even have time to worry about me. Let’s not talk about these annoying things anymore. How about we go shopping today?”

Bai Yao didn’t oppose the idea.

At the mall, after buying a few clothes, Bai Yao lost interest. He Cai, in high spirits, took a large pile of clothes and went into the fitting room to try them on one by one, leaving Bai Yao to wait outside.

Bai Yao picked up a small doll from the bag. She looked at it carefully. It was something she had bought not long ago, a creepy doll.

Although it was creepy, she thought it was quite cute.

The little doll wore a black robe, had a terrifying white mask, and was holding a small scythe in its hand.

The store owner said it was a Grim Reaper doll, and she had taken a liking to it at first sight. She was planning to give it to Lu Sheng when she got home.

“Miss Bai.”

A man sat down next to Bai Yao and greeted her friendly.

Bai Yao looked at Chen Shuo, who was smiling. She casually stuffed the small doll into her pocket and responded with a smile, “Officer Chen.”

Chen Shuo said, “What a coincidence to meet Miss Bai here.”

Bai Yao asked, “Officer Chen, are you here to buy clothes with your girlfriend?”

Chen Shuo smiled awkwardly. “I just drift through the days. Where would I find a girlfriend?”

Bai Yao smiled. “Then meeting Officer Chen in a women’s clothing store isn’t really a coincidence, is it?”

Chen Shuo didn’t feel embarrassed. He instinctively reached into his pocket to pull out a cigarette, but remembering that smoking was prohibited here, he withdrew his hand and cleared his throat. He said, “Miss Bai is a smart person, so I won’t beat around the bush. I initially wanted to ask for your help in investigating Lu Sheng.”

Bai Yao asked, “And now?”

Chen Shuo replied helplessly, “Seeing how close you and Lu Sheng are, of course, I had to give up on that idea. But from my standpoint, I still think it’s necessary to let you know how dangerous Lu Sheng might be.”

Bai Yao’s tone remained calm. “What are you trying to say?”

Chen Shuo said, “Over the past twenty years, people have been disappearing continuously. After they vanish, no bodies are found. There’s not even any useful footage from security cameras. I once suspected Lu Sheng might be involved, but he’s only in his twenties now. To suggest he started committing crimes as a child? That just doesn’t add up.”

He paused, then said with deeper meaning, “But what if these things have already gone beyond the boundaries of what ordinary people consider scientifically possible?”

Several times during his investigations into the disappearances, Chen Shuo had encountered Lu Sheng doing interviews. Lu Sheng was just a young man new to the workforce. There was nothing unusual about him on the surface. Yet Chen Shuo had a gut feeling that rather than simply interviewing the families of the missing, it seemed more like Lu Sheng was observing their fear.

It was like those criminals with antisocial personalities who, after committing their crimes, would return to the scene just to watch others panic and derive a sense of accomplishment from it.

Chen Shuo looked at Bai Yao. “Miss Bai, you’re not scared when hearing about supernatural incidents?”

Bai Yao said, “Of course, I’m scared. But the more afraid I am inside, the calmer I appear on the outside.”

She asked, “If you think Lu Sheng is the one behind the disappearances, then what would be his motive?”

Chen Shuo smiled. “Why would he need a motive? Don’t psychopaths kill simply because they want to?”

Bai Yao nodded in agreement. “Yes, that makes sense.”

Chen Shuo continued, “We also investigated the Yuhua Community, but that place is seriously eerie. Anyone who digs even a little deeper either goes mad or disappears. Even though I didn’t believe in ghosts before, I’ve started to have doubts.”

Bai Yao reminded him kindly, “Then if you keep digging, won’t you end up like them?”

“I have no choice but to continue investigating.”

Bai Yao looked at him with admiration. “Is this your professional conviction?”

Chen Shuo gave a faint smile, his gaze somber. “I’m not that noble. Honestly, no matter how many people have gone missing over the past twenty years, I never cared that much. There’s only one person whose whereabouts I truly want to uncover.”

He took out a photo and handed it to Bai Yao.

In the photo was a woman with long black hair. She had delicate features and a gentle expression. The photo had an aged appearance, suggesting it was taken many years ago.

Bai Yao looked at Chen Shuo, puzzled.

He said, “Her name was Chen Yan. She was my older sister. She went missing twenty years ago. At the time, she was living in Yuhua Community.”

Chen Shuo asked, “Miss Bai, do you believe in intuition?”

Bai Yao replied, “Sometimes, you have no choice but to.”

“Exactly. The moment I saw Lu Sheng for the first time, I had a strong feeling that he knew what happened to my sister.”

Bai Yao hesitated for a moment. “Were you and your sister very close?”

Chen Shuo didn’t answer that question. Instead, he said, “Our parents died shortly after I was born. She raised me. We depended on each other for many years, until I applied to a university far away without her consent.”
