Bai Yao rested her chin on one hand, recalling that naked child. She felt a bit sorry for him again. “But thinking about it carefully, he’s actually kind of pitiful. Kids don’t know anything. Do his parents not take care of him at all?”
Lu Sheng imitated her posture, propping his chin on one hand and said, “His father abandoned him and his mother. His mother took it really hard, her health isn’t good, and she probably can’t manage him either.”
Bai Yao sat up straight, frowning. “What a scumbag. I clearly saw someone living in that house, but it’s always dark at night. His dad must not even be paying child support. Maybe they can’t even afford the electricity bill!”
Lu Sheng also sat up straight, filled with righteous indignation. “As far as I know, that man didn’t leave them anything at all.”
Bai Yao felt anger at the scumbag, and also a wave of sympathy for the poor mother and child. She recalled how fiercely she had threatened the child earlier, and now felt a little bit guilty about it.
It was getting late, and after eating, they needed to head back.
Lu Sheng walked Bai Yao to her door. “Miss Bai, thank you for your hospitality today. The weather forecast says it’ll rain tonight, so remember to lock your doors and windows. Sweet dreams. Goodbye.”
Bai Yao waved, “Goodbye.”
After Lu Sheng left, Bai Yao closed the door. She mentally reviewed her interaction with him today and confirmed that her performance had been flawless. She covered her face excitedly.
As she wondered what excuse to use next time to meet him again, she returned to the bedroom and rummaged through her wardrobe for clothes to wear after her shower. She hummed an off-key tune, “Today is a good day, Yao Yao is still flawless and lovable, hmm hmm, everyone should fall in love with me…”
Elsewhere, in a silent space illuminated by several high-intensity lamps, the lights burned so hot they could almost roast someone into a mummy.
Several people were held captive there, both men and women. Some had one leg shackled, some one arm. The space resembled a heavily reinforced sunroom. After spending a long time there, it was hard to even keep their eyes open. The dehydration was unbearable.
Just when they began to suspect that their skin might shrivel into dried husks, someone entered humming a song.
“Today is a good day, Yao Yao is still flawless and lovable, hmm hmm…”
The completely off-tune melody, hummed in a man’s low voice. In this space filled with the threat of death, it sounded all the more eerie.
The captives, having suffered numerous torments, no longer even had the courage to beg for mercy.
It was a man in a black robe with a hood, wearing a white mask with a comical and twisted expression. But those imprisoned here would never think he was truly funny. During this time, they had already witnessed what he was capable of.
He sat down in a chair, lazily leaning against the backrest. One long leg draped over the other, the booted foot swinging back and forth, flaunting his good mood.
Supporting his chin with one hand, his eyes beneath his white mask curved with delight. “If you still can’t make a decision, you’re going to be roasted dry.”
He spoke with such calm indifference, as if in this place of life and death, he was the god who held control over both.
In urban legends, a tale had emerged at some point about a “Masked Killer”—a figure clad in a black robe and wearing a grotesque mask. It was said that if you heard his laughter, you would be taken to the land of the dead and become a clown in his twisted game.
And now, these withered souls had become the unfortunate clowns for his amusement.
This group had already endured torment, thinking they could survive his game and make it to the end. But they hadn’t expected that upon waking from unconsciousness today, they would find themselves trapped in this oven-like room.
Someone had already lost hope. “Please… Just kill me…”
But the masked killer spoke earnestly, encouraging him, “How can you give up so easily just because of a little hardship? You only get one life. You should treasure it. If you die, there’s nothing left.”
A woman wanted to cry, but due to dehydration, no tears would come. She said in anguish, “I’d rather die than be tortured by you!”
The masked killer switched the leg he had crossed, sitting with no proper posture, his tone light and cheerful. “To stimulate your will to survive, I’ve put in a lot of effort. You talk about death so casually. How can you be so indifferent to life?”
He’s insane!
“Only when you are at the brink of life and death will you truly understand the value of life. Treasure it. Love it. Only by striving to live can you create greater value for the world.” He let out a soft chuckle. “Learning to make choices is also an important lesson in life.”
At some point, a saw had appeared next to each of the captives. After enduring so much torment, the moment they saw the saw, they understood what the masked killer wanted them to do.
In this space filled with blinding light, a door slowly creaked open.
He said, “See? You still have a chance to walk out.”
The chains binding their limbs had no keys. After long exposure under the scorching lights, they had already fallen into despair and resigned themselves to death. But now, the appearance of the saw reignited a flicker of hope.
The clock on the wall began to tick.
He smiled and said, “Ten-minute countdown.”
That night, heavy rain indeed began to fall. The sound of rain, mixed with lightning and thunder, woke the sleeping people.
Bai Yao grumpily pulled the blanket over her head, but the thunder was too loud. Failing to fall back asleep, she opened her eyes. Amidst the storm, she thought she heard another sound.
Bai Yao sat up and turned on the light in her room. Wearing slippers, she got out of bed and walked into the living room. As soon as she turned on the light there, a flash of lightning struck, and the lights went out. She tried pressing the switch several times, but nothing happened. Looking back into the bedroom, that light was out too. It must have been a power outage.
Outside the living room window, wind and rain raged. Raindrops as large as beans struck the glass with a noisy patter. Lightning illuminated the night, and she vaguely saw a figure appear outside the window.
Bai Yao thought she might have been seeing things until, after another flash of lightning, she saw that figure right outside her window. She crouched in a corner and pulled out her phone, preparing to call the police.
Until she heard a cat meow.
She looked up.
In a flash of lightning that tore through the night sky, the man caught the frantically darting black cat. He stood up, and as if borrowing the light of the fleeting lightning, his gaze happened to meet that of the girl crouching inside the house. He ruffled his rain-soaked hair in frustration and gave her an apologetic smile.
The power came back, and the house suddenly lit up.
Someone knocked on the door outside. He said, “Miss Bai, you don’t have to open the door. I was woken by the thunder, and I happened to hear Xiao Hei meowing. I was worried you’d be scared sleeping alone and hearing the cat’s cries, so I came over to catch it.”
Lu Sheng stood outside the door, completely soaked. His orange hair had lost its usual energy and clung softly to his pale cheeks. If he had resembled a spirited big dog before, now he looked more like a drenched and bedraggled cat.
He held the black cat in his arms. His white T-shirt was stained with mud, but he didn’t care. Instead, he said sheepishly, “I must have scared you. Don’t be afraid, I’ll leave now.”
Just as Lu Sheng turned around, the sound of the door opening came from behind.
The girl said, “Mr. Lu.”
He turned around and saw the warm light spilling from inside the house, and saw her standing within it.
Bai Yao’s long hair was loose, and she wore a white nightdress with a pair of pink bear slippers. She was a complete contrast to his rain-soaked appearance.
But as she stepped out two steps, drops of water splashed lightly onto her dark hair.
Thunder boomed, wind and rain howled.
The kitten in his arms nervously glanced at Bai Yao with its round cat eyes.
After the next clap of thunder, she looked up at him. On her beautiful face, her eyes seemed to sparkle. “What do you think of me?”
She said, “I like you quite a bit.”
She added, “If you don’t dislike me, should we try dating?”
Lu Sheng blinked his rain-blurred eyes. He looked a bit dazed, and even a little dumbstruck.
The kitten hurriedly let out a “Meow.”
He came back to his senses, his eyes falling on the girl’s delicate face. Suddenly, he smiled joyfully. “Sure, let’s date!”
As for the word “try,” he completely discarded it.
