It was unclear when exactly it had happened, but the sky had already turned dark.
Beiji Town was a place of oddities. Its very existence defied scientific reasoning. No matter how absurd an event might seem, it was simply taken as a matter of course here.
Ever since Bai Yao became pregnant, she would get hungry more easily. Xue Yan took her to a supermarket. The owner hadn’t returned yet, so he pulled out a handful of change from his pocket, carefully counted the exact amount, placed it on the counter, and then carried a bag of food to sit with Bai Yao on the chairs by the display window.
Xue Yan tore open the packaging of a piece of bread and handed it to Bai Yao, then placed a carton of yogurt with the straw already inserted on the table in front of her. After that, he rested both hands on the table, cupped his face in them, and grinned as he watched her.
Bai Yao took a bite of the bread and mumbled through her mouthful, “Why are you staring at me?”
Xue Yan replied, “Because Yao Yao looks beautiful.”
Bai Yao shot him a glance. “What kind of nonsense is that? When do I ever not look good?”
Xue Yan very tactfully said, “Yao Yao looks beautiful every day!”
Bai Yao was satisfied with that answer. As she chewed, she noticed figures walking along the street. Under the table, she lightly nudged the person across from her with her foot and whispered with curiosity, “Look over there.”
Xue Yan followed her gaze. It was Innkeeper Shu and that human girl.
On the empty street, only Innkeeper Shu and Yin Huanmian’s silhouettes moved under the night sky. The silence and oppressive stillness of the street became even more pronounced in the darkness.
Though they walked together, Yin Huanmian kept a deliberate distance from Innkeeper Shu. It was clear that her body was tense, and her steps were hurried as if she couldn’t wait to escape from the invisible yet menacing gazes around her.
Innkeeper Shu, on the other hand, remained as refined and elegant as ever. “Miss Yin, congratulations on being the lucky one.”
Yin Huanmian responded, “Thank you.”
Then she added, “I can go by myself. No need to trouble you to escort me.”
“Miss Yin isn’t familiar with the place and could easily get lost. Besides, I have nothing else to do right now, so I might as well escort you.”
Yin Huanmian fell silent.
The scenes from earlier still replayed vividly in her mind.
Jiang Xun was the reason this town existed in the first place. It was only natural that the residents sought revenge. What unsettled her, however, was the fact that only those with dark desires in their hearts could receive a ticket to Beiji Town.
Did she also harbor such dark desires?
Of course, she did.
When she had witnessed her fiancé embracing her best friend at their engagement party, a terrifying thought had surfaced in her mind—if only those two would just die.
Although that sinister thought had faded over time, she couldn’t deny that, at one point, she had truly wished for it.
Perhaps that was why she had ended up coming here with Tian Susu and the others.
Inside the store, Bai Yao asked Xue Yan, “Where are they going?”
Xue Yan replied absentmindedly, “The last person alive won a ticket to the Rose Manor. Boss Shu is probably taking her there.”
Bai Yao sipped her yogurt and said with interest, “I wonder if Boss Shu will feel sad.”
Xue Yan tilted his head and blinked in confusion.
That frail-looking Miss Yin had been eager to leave from the very start. It was only natural that any normal person would see everything that had happened in Beiji Town as a nightmare. She only wanted to escape, without the slightest hesitation or regret.
Through the forest path, a white manor surrounded by roses emerged in the moonless night.
Innkeeper Shu said, “Push open the door and walk inside. You’ll be able to leave this place.”
Yin Huanmian took a few steps forward.
But just as she was about to enter, Innkeeper Shu blocked her path once more. Smiling, he said, “Miss Yin, what I meant was that once you step inside, there’s no turning back. Even if you wanted to come back for one last look, you might not have the chance. So—”
Yin Huanmian interrupted him. “No turning back? Even better.”
She stepped around him and walked straight into the manor.
Innkeeper Shu never even got the chance to finish speaking—“Wouldn’t you like to properly say goodbye to me?”
Watching her leave without a moment’s hesitation, he felt an unfamiliar, stifling sensation in his chest, something akin to frustration.
Behind her, he called out once more, “Miss Yin, since we’ve met, how about a farewell hug?”
Yin Huanmian shot back, “Get lost!”
She pushed open the white doors and stepped inside without hesitation. A flash of white light engulfed her, and when she opened her eyes again, she was standing in a forest bathed in daylight.
A group of backpackers hiking through the area spotted a girl appearing all alone and approached her with concern. “Miss, are you alright?”
Yin Huanmian stood there in a daze for a long time. The ticket in her hand crumbled into dust and disappeared. Only then did she dare to believe that she had truly left that eerie town.
She was back in the real world.
The overwhelming relief of surviving crashed into her like a tidal wave. She sank to the ground, covered her face, and burst into loud sobs.
She no longer had to face the constant threat of death. No longer had to live in fear every day. No longer had to maintain superficial pleasantries with men…
She could finally return to a normal life!
In Beiji Town, the night still lingered.
On the way home, Xue Yan carried Bai Yao on his back. Once again, they ran into Innkeeper Shu.
Innkeeper Shu was sitting on the steps of the inn, staring blankly into space, lost in thought.
Bai Yao, resting on Xue Yan’s back, asked, “What’s Boss Shu doing just sitting there?”
Hearing her voice, Innkeeper Shu snapped out of his daze. His usual polite, smiling demeanor returned as he said, “I’m admiring the moon.”
Xue Yan and Bai Yao instinctively looked up at the night sky.
There wasn’t a moon. Not even a single star.
Xue Yan mercilessly pointed out, “Are you stupid?”
Bai Yao pinched Xue Yan’s cheek and scolded, “What do you know? Boss Shu carries the moon in his heart, so he sees the moon wherever he goes. That’s a high level of spiritual awareness. He’s got a romantic soul. You could never compare.”
Xue Yan pursed his lips in dissatisfaction. Innkeeper Shu was just a pitiful, unwanted loner. What’s so great about that?
Bai Yao was actually speaking up for Innkeeper Shu.
Innkeeper Shu was truly guilty of a heinous crime.
Xue Yan flashed Innkeeper Shu a bright, cheerful smile. “Ever since Yao Yao got pregnant with my baby, she gets tired easily. I need to take her home and cuddle her to sleep. We’ll be off now. Bye-bye!”
Bai Yao’s face grew warm. She whispered in Xue Yan’s ear, “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Xue Yan, completely unfazed, replied, “I’m just stating the truth. Yao Yao can’t sleep at night unless you’re holding me.”
Bai Yao pinched his ear and urged him to hurry up and leave before he embarrassed her any further.
Innkeeper Shu watched the young couple walk away, chatting and laughing. Resting his chin on one hand, he let out a long, wistful sigh. But before long, the corners of his lips curled into a smile.
Looking at the night sky stretching overhead, his eyes seemed to be slowly swallowed by the surrounding darkness. He smiled faintly.
“Miss Yin, may you have sweet dreams every night.”
Jiang Xun was right.
They were all monsters.
And since they were monsters, morality was meaningless to them. They only knew what they wanted and what they didn’t. And the things they desired… No matter what it took, they would claim them as their own.
No matter how late or how exhausted she was, Bai Yao never went to bed without taking a bath.
She sat in the bathtub, listening to Xue Yan squatting outside the door, rambling on and on. He seemed determined to recount every little detail of his day, even going so far as to describe an ant colony he had spotted moving along the roadside.
Bai Yao occasionally responded with a half-hearted “Oh.”
And at that moment, a translucent panel suddenly appeared before her eyes.
【 Congratulations, host, on your successful conquest. Would you like to leave this world? 】
Bai Yao glanced at it and, without a shred of hesitation, selected “No.”
She reached up and touched the top of her head, feeling somewhat puzzled.
From what Jiang Xun had revealed earlier, that girl named Tian Susu seemed to have some kind of system that could communicate with her and guide her actions.
But Bai Yao had only ever seen the word “conquer” appear once. After that, the voice that had suddenly echoed in her mind never spoke again, as if it had never existed in the first place. It was truly bizarre.
From outside, Xue Yan started knocking on the door. “Yao Yao, Yao Yao! Did you fall asleep? It’s dangerous to doze off while soaking in the bath!”
Just as Bai Yao was looking at the door, it suddenly burst open.
Her eyebrow twitched. “What the hell are you doing in here?”
Xue Yan said earnestly, “I was worried about you!”
Bai Yao snapped, “Did your concern require you to strip before coming in?!”
Xue Yan showed no shame whatsoever. In fact, he deliberately flaunted his physique in front of her. Slipping into the bathtub, he wrapped his arms around her and nuzzled against her. “It’s been so long since you touched my tail.”
Bai Yao’s rationality was still intact. “No. I’m pregnant.”
But Xue Yan clung to her persistently, lowering his head and whimpering pitifully. It had already been over a month since she last touched him. His nature was such that, once he had tasted pleasure, he found it unbearable to go without. The fact that he had restrained himself for this long was already quite the feat.
Bai Yao cleared her throat. “Well… Using other methods isn’t entirely out of the question.”
Xue Yan’s eyes lit up instantly.
Bai Yao’s gaze flickered uncomfortably. “…Do you want to or not?”
He tightened his embrace around her and nodded fervently. “Yes!”
All it took was a bit of coquettishness, and she would soften for him.
If this wasn’t love, then what was?
With eyes squinting in bliss, he thought to himself that she was absolutely head over heels for him.
