Bai Yao’s eyes were suddenly covered, and Xue Yan’s panicked voice came from beside her ear, “Yaoyao, d-don’t look at me like that…”
And just like that, he once again became that delicate, timid little wife.
Bai Yao gently patted his hand, indicating that she did not mind.
Xue Yan’s tense body relaxed slightly. He quietly moved his hand down just a little and, seeing that Bai Yao’s gaze toward him was no different than usual, his face lit up with a big smile. He grabbed her hand and rubbed it against his cheek.
He was simply a little sweetheart. What danger could he possibly pose?
Innkeeper Shu reminded in a low voice, “We’re in the middle of enacting a revenge scene. Could you show a little respect to the rest of us?”
Xue Yan shot him an annoyed glance, then pulled Bai Yao behind the crowd and continued clinging to her.
Jiang Xun was still trapped in fear. He swept his eyes over the people present, trying to defend himself. “Back then, I never intended to use you for experiments. I was forced by others. We are all human, we are compatriots…”
Teacher Wu unexpectedly chuckled. “Oh? So we still qualify as human in your eyes?”
Teacher Zhao added, “Wasn’t Dr. Jiang the one who used to refer to us as monsters by our serial numbers?”
Jiang Xun’s face was drained of all color.
A town that could not be found on any map. Only those with a heart full of wicked desires had the chance to board the bus that led there. It was rumored that anyone who managed to leave this place alive would gain immortality.
Most people treated it as nothing more than an urban legend, but Jiang Xun knew it was real.
He was well aware of the dangers lurking in Beiji Town, yet the decay of his own body left him with no choice but to return. He was no fool. He had begun planning more than twenty years ago to ensure his survival among the monsters.
First, he had to select a child.
During that time, he concealed his identity and took a job at a hospital. One day, outside a patient’s room, he witnessed the following scene:
An eight-year-old girl had broken her leg and was hospitalized. Her parents brought a cake to celebrate her birthday at the hospital.
Nestled in her mother’s arms was another girl, around five or six years old, delicate and beautiful. As she listened to her parents sing the birthday song for her sister, her eyes welled up with tears.
Her mother asked with concern, “Susu, why are you crying?”
The girl named Susu replied aggrievedly, “Jiejie got hurt and had to stay in the hospital. Mom and Dad come to visit her every day, but they only let the nanny pick me up from kindergarten. Now, you’re both here celebrating her birthday, but when it was my birthday last time, Daddy was on a business trip and didn’t even come home.”
The young parents realized they had been paying too much attention to their eldest daughter. The father placed the birthday princess crown on the younger daughter’s head and comforted her, saying, “That was our mistake, Susu. We neglected you. This time, you and your sister can celebrate together. And once Jiejie gets better, we’ll all go to the amusement park together.”
The older sister glanced at the princess crown on her younger sister’s head, lowered her gaze, and said nothing.
Their mother smiled and said, “Jiejie and Meimei should blow out the candles together.”
The happiness on the older sister’s face gradually faded. The two sisters blew out the candles together as their parents wished them both a happy birthday.
Their mother asked, “What did Jiejie wish for?”
The girl sitting on the hospital bed replied, “I wished for Mom and Dad to stay safe and for Dad’s work to be a little easier so he wouldn’t have to work overtime every day.”
The father looked visibly moved.
The younger sister tugged on his hand and softly said, “I wished for Jiejie to get better soon. Jiejie got hurt, so Daddy finally had time to come home. But… But once Jiejie recovers, you and Mom might not have time to take me to the amusement park anymore, I still hope Jiejie gets better quickly.”
The father reflected on how he had indeed overlooked his younger daughter during the time his elder daughter was injured. He patted the little girl’s head. “You really want to go to the amusement park that badly? Then I’ll take you tomorrow.”
The younger sister said, “But Jiejie isn’t better yet.”
Dad chuckled, “Once Jiejie recovers, we’ll go again together.”
The younger sister beamed with joy. “Daddy, you’re the best!”
Amidst this warm and harmonious scene, only the elder sister did not smile.
Jiang Xun fixed his gaze on the child called Susu and, at that moment, became certain—she was the one.
A child seemingly born to incite malice in others. Once she grew up, she would undoubtedly bring him even greater surprises.
But first, he had to ensure she could survive in that town full of monsters.
Jiang Xun observed Tian Susu in secret for many years. He knew what she liked, so he designed the system to match her preferences. The so-called system was nothing more than an artificial intelligence, entirely programmable according to his instructions.
It would coax Tian Susu, guide her, and help her survive.
The electronic chip he created, based on past biological research, could regulate the host’s hormonal secretion. After all, every monster in that town was his creation. He knew all too well that they operated on animal instincts. And where there were instincts, there would be mating behaviors triggered by pheromones.
In that town, no monster would be willing to harm Tian Susu. Jiang Xun could fully exploit her to obtain what he desired.
Everything proceeded exactly as he had planned. He and Tian Susu were successfully chosen as passengers bound for the town. It could be said that everyone on that bus had been selected because of the darkness in their hearts. But those people were insignificant; after all, their fate was sealed. Death was the only outcome for them.
Jiang Xun had never imagined that the chess piece he had so meticulously prepared would die just like that!
Everyone was closing in on him.
Jiang Xun knew there was no escape. Forced to retreat step by step, he stumbled over Tian Susu’s corpse and fell to the ground. Her mangled body seemed to be mocking his arrogance. Still in disbelief, he peered through the crowd at Xue Yan behind them.
“Why did you kill her?!”
If Tian Susu had lived… If only she had lived, maybe he would have already succeeded!
Xue Yan held Bai Yao in his arms, burying her face against his chest. He curled his lips into a smile and, in an innocent tone, said, “Her pheromones disgusted me.”
Jiang Xun opened his mouth, but before he could utter a word, a searing pain tore through his body, and he let out a piercing scream.
Hand in hand, Xue Yan led Bai Yao out of the screening room. As they walked down the dimly lit corridor, the screams and sounds of flesh being torn apart gradually faded behind them.
Bai Yao tugged at his hand. “Aren’t you going to join in?”
Xue Yan replied, “You don’t like it when I get dirty.”
If he joined in, he’d inevitably end up covered in the stench of blood and flesh.
Bai Yao spoke casually, “Today can be an exception.”
Xue Yan lowered his gaze, looking at her in slight surprise.
Bai Yao spoke with righteous conviction, “He experimented on you. It’s only fair for you to get some revenge!”
She wasn’t one of the victims and couldn’t claim to fully understand their pain, but she could comprehend their hatred toward Jiang Xun. After waiting so many years for their chance at vengeance, how could they not relish the opportunity to torment him?
Growing anxious, Bai Yao grabbed his arm and urged, “Don’t worry about what I think, Xue Yan. I fully support you! Gouge out his eyes, cut off his tongue, flay him, tear out his tendons, chop him into pieces if you want! There are so many people fighting over him right now. If you wait too long, there might be nothing left for you! Hurry up! You can still make it in time!”
How could she say something so gruesome and bloody in the same tone one would use to talk about a supermarket clearance sale?
Seeing that Xue Yan remained unmoved, Bai Yao tried to pull him back toward the chaos, but she couldn’t budge him. Instead, he pulled her into his arms.
Burying his face against her neck, Xue Yan rubbed against her, letting out a soft laugh without saying a word.
Bai Yao patted his head. “What are you doing?”
Whether it was skinning Jiang Xun alive, tearing him limb from limb, or gutting him completely, there were already plenty of people fighting over the privilege to do it. Xue Yan didn’t join in because he no longer needed such means to heal himself.
In the darkness, he pressed a kiss to the corner of her lips, his voice laced with quiet laughter.
“Yao Yao, I’m already happy.”
