On this unknown planet, they had no way of knowing how time passed. They could only vaguely guess that it was deep into the night when the cold pressed in more heavily.

The warmth given off by the small heater was far from enough.

Bai Yao was too cold to fall asleep. Even though she had already moved as close to the heater as possible, that bit of heat seemed pitifully insignificant against the surrounding chill.

She hugged her body tightly and sneezed again. If this went on, she would probably not be far from falling ill.

The boy beside her, who had been quiet for a long time, spoke softly. “Do you need help?”

Bai Yao looked at him.

He said, “I’m not afraid of the cold.”

Then, after hesitating for a moment, he reached a hand out toward her.

Bai Yao tentatively took it and immediately felt a wave of warmth. She did not know if it was because he was young and full of vigor, but his body temperature was much higher than hers.

In this bitterly cold environment, the warmth of his body did not seem affected in the slightest.

Shi Jiu spoke softly again. “Is it okay?”

Clearly, he was the one offering help, yet his careful tone and humble attitude made it seem as if he were the one asking for help instead.

When faced with a choice between propriety and survival, Bai Yao chose the latter without hesitation. Just as she leaned forward slightly, Shi Jiu had already moved in front of her. She curled up her limbs and nestled into his arms.

Through the layers of clothing, his body heat flowed steadily toward her, like a warm furnace, keeping the cold at bay.

At last, Bai Yao was able to relax a little. Most of her body could rest against him, but she was wearing a dress, so her calves were still exposed to the air.

Shi Jiu took off his jacket and wrapped it around her, covering her legs.

Now he was left with only a thin black T-shirt on his body, something that would make anyone else look cold at a glance.

Bai Yao asked him, “Aren’t you cold?”

He shook his head and said softly, “I’m not cold. My body is always warm.”

That was indeed true. Bai Yao could clearly feel his temperature. That kind of warmth, unaffected by the cold, was far stronger than the heater.

She had been holding on for a long time without rest, and now she could not help but feel drowsy.

She did not speak, and Shi Jiu did not dare to speak either.

He knew he had dirtied her dress. Now that more dust had gotten onto his own body, it was inevitable that the person in his arms would become even dirtier. He was afraid that his noisy voice would only provoke more dislike from her.

Bai Yao’s curled-up body gradually relaxed. Her face rested against his chest, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and steady.

She had fallen asleep.

Shi Jiu lowered his gaze and tilted his head slightly, his eyes settling on her sleeping face. His gaze was focused, hard to tell whether it was curiosity or observation. Throughout the entire night, he maintained the same position without moving.

Time passed, though he did not know how long.

When Bai Yao woke up, sunlight was spilling into the cave from outside. Although the sunlight still did not look very warm, it was at least more comfortable than the temperature during the night.

The second thing she saw was the boy’s pitch-black eyes.

A smile appeared on Shi Jiu’s face. “Miss Bai, good morning.”

His voice had always been soft, as if he were afraid that speaking too loudly would disturb others and invite their displeasure.

Bai Yao straightened her body, and he withdrew the arm that had been holding her.

She asked, “Did you not sleep at all last night?”

Shi Jiu replied, “I closed my eyes and rested for a while.”

Bai Yao returned the jacket to him and said, “Thank you.”

Shi Jiu hugged his clothes to himself, the corners of his lips lifting into a pure, innocent smile. “It is my honor to be of help to you.”

Bai Yao glanced at him. She did not say anything, only stood up and stretched before speaking. “We need to go out and look for the landing point of the garbage ship.”

Shi Jiu stood beside her and nodded obediently. “Okay.”

In order to make the most of their limited manpower, Bai Yao decided to split up with Shi Jiu. She set the same countdown on his wristband as on her own. Whether or not they found any useful information, they were to return here to regroup in two hours.

Shi Jiu seemed to have no sense of personal will at all. Whatever Bai Yao said, he simply agreed.

After making their arrangement, Bai Yao headed toward the road on the left, where yellow sand spread endlessly. Her pace was neither fast nor slow, yet all she could see along the way was sand and trash.

Among that trash, the majority consisted of scrapped synthetic humans.

Electronic devices were updated at an ever faster rate. A synthetic human bought one year might already be obsolete by the next.

Everyone owning a synthetic human was as common as everyone owning a mobile phone in the twenty-first century. With such high ownership came an equally high rate of disposal.

Bai Yao knew that synthetic humans could not be considered people. They were merely machines. Yet they happened to possess human appearances.

This landfill was a graveyard for synthetic humans, and at the same time, it seemed to reveal a graveyard for humanity itself.

An inexplicable sense of sorrow arose.

By the agreed time, Bai Yao had not found any useful information. She could only head back. When she arrived at the meeting point, she did not see the boy.

Shi Jiu did not seem like the kind of person who would break a promise.

Suddenly, the silhouette of a spaceship appeared in the distant sky. It continued to descend, its engines roaring like a beast plunging into this desolate land.

That was the direction Shi Jiu had gone.

The black-haired boy was holding a pile of parts that might still be usable, his gaze locked tightly onto the spaceship descending from the sky.

The rising dust storm wildly whipped his black, tousled hair and loose clothing, making it impossible not to worry that he might be torn apart by the wind.

The spaceship marked with the letters “SpR” landed steadily on the ground. The hatch opened, and heaps of scrapped synthetic humans were tossed out of the ship one after another.

Several of the synthetic humans had their limbs broken on impact, circuits and skeletal structures exposed, yet they were still “alive”.

Their bodies twitched a few times, sparks and electric light bursting out. After their eyes emitted a dim blue glow, they lay still, soon buried beneath newly discarded synthetic humans.

Two men in company uniforms appeared at the hatch.

The taller man complained, “Every time they make us do this kind of hard labor. What bad luck.”

The shorter man was in no better mood. “This garbage planet stinks, and the air makes people uncomfortable. I really do not want to come back to this hellhole again.”

The first man took out a card and waved it, saying with a meaningful smile, “I got a discount coupon for Dreamland. I heard they recently got a lot of new high-quality goods. When we get back, let’s go have some fun there.”

The second man immediately grinned. “Sounds good.”

Shi Jiu watched for a long time. When all movement finally stopped, the items he was holding fell to the ground. He stepped out from the corner.
