- Chapter 134 - The Day the Code Fell in Love IV
Shi Jiu lowered his voice and asked, “What is it?”
Seeing Bai Yao appear here, he did not feel the least bit surprised. Perhaps, like many others assumed, since he was Ruan Jiaojiao’s “younger brother,” it was only natural that she would come looking to trouble him.
Moreover, she was far too exquisite and dazzling. People who were too beautiful always carried an invisible pressure that made others feel they couldn’t get close.
Bai Yao curved her eyes in a smile, lifted the hand holding a bag, and said with a laugh, “Hello, we could be considered neighbors now. This is a small gift.”
In the paper bag printed with tiny floral patterns was a small portable flowerpot. Inside the pot was a plant with tender green leaves, and from the healthy color of those leaves, it was clear the little potted plant had been carefully tended to.
Shi Jiu’s gaze fell on the patch of fresh green. “Moonstone.”
Bai Yao was slightly surprised. “It hasn’t even bloomed yet, and you can already tell it’s Moonstone.”
Shi Jiu lowered his eyes and said nothing.
What Bai Yao had brought was a seedling of the Moonstone, a variety of rose. The Moonstone white rose, when in full bloom, shone like a pure white jade gem under moonlight.
For this trip, the only presentable things Bai Yao could offer as gifts were these flowers and plants. Her field of study belonged to a small subdiscipline within Earth biological sciences.
Over the years, Earth’s environment has been deteriorating rapidly. According to AI projections, in at most a hundred years, the planet would become uninhabitable for humans due to polluted soil and air.
Thus, countries around the world had formed an alliance called “Second Earth,” dedicated to finding a habitable planet to replace Earth.
Bai Yao’s future work would also focus on finding planets suitable for the growth of Earth’s flora and fauna. Like her classmates, she always carried seeds and seedlings with her.
Bai Yao didn’t intend to talk much with Shi Jiu. She set the bag on the ground and said, “I’ll go rest first. Goodbye.”
She entered the room next door and closed the door behind her.
Shi Jiu picked up the paper bag and stared at the green leaves in the flowerpot. He reached out his finger and brushed the leaf with his fingertip.
The leaf was thin, its veins uneven and slightly raised. The plant was fragile.
So this was what a plant from Earth felt like.
Shi Jiu stored this piece of knowledge in his mind. As he withdrew his hand, his gaze fell on a red glass tube behind the flowerpot.
It was Nutrient No. 7, the very thing he had been searching for.
Shi Jiu looked up again but could only see the closed door.
Although everything in this era was incredibly convenient, including eating, since humans could simply consume nutrient tablets or serums to replenish the energy their bodies needed, meals were ultimately meant for enjoyment.
If people weren’t pressed for time, they preferred to spend it eating a proper meal in the cafeteria.
Bai Yao was used to sleeping in. She had thought she was already late to the cafeteria, but there were still people who arrived later than her.
Ruan Jiaojiao’s walk looked a bit strange, as if her back ached and her legs lacked strength. A beautiful silk scarf was wrapped around her neck.
Ruan Jiaojiao appeared embarrassed and shy, glaring angrily at the tall man beside her.
Li Shenjue, however, was in an excellent mood, the corners of his lips lifting in a smile that radiated charm.
Someone exclaimed, “Oh my God, the Commander actually smiled!”
Another person was shocked. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen the Commander smile!”
Ruan Jiaojiao grew even more embarrassed. Her face flushed bright red, and the softness of her cheeks made her look even more delicate and adorable in her shyness. She took a small step to the side, as if trying to distance herself from Li Shenjue.
Li Shenjue domineeringly pulled her back with one hand. Lowering his voice, he said, “Looks like I wasn’t diligent enough last night if you still have the strength to run today. Jiaojiao, I’ll have to make sure I work hard tonight.”
Ruan Jiaojiao raised her startled face, adorable like a frightened little white rabbit. Her rosy lips parted slightly, tempting one to steal a kiss.
Li Shenjue’s eyes darkened. His grip tightened as he spoke in a hoarse voice, “Jiaojiao, don’t even think about going anywhere except under me.”
Ruan Jiaojiao blushed and whispered, “That hurts.”
Her soft, sweet voice carried a hint of coquettish charm that could melt even the hardest of hearts, making any man want to worship her and pamper her like a delicate little princess.
Li Shenjue immediately released her hand, but even that brief grasp had already left red marks on her delicate wrist.
This little Jiaojiao really was soft and fragile. When she cried, her tender, trembling voice sounded even more enchanting.
With reddened eyes, Li Shenjue gripped her waist and said, “Jiaojiao, call me husband, and I’ll give you my life.”
Ruan Jiaojiao’s heart raced wildly.
Just then, a fit of violent coughing from nearby shattered the intimate moment.
When Ruan Jiaojiao saw it was Bai Yao, she froze for a second, then quickly stepped two paces away from Li Shenjue, not sparing him another glance.
Hmph, he clearly already had a fiancée, so why did he keep bothering me?
Jiaojiao was angry.
Li Shenjue’s expression turned dark as he looked at Bai Yao, who had somehow ended up standing nearby. “Bai Yao, do you enjoy eavesdropping on other people’s conversations?”
Bai Yao looked innocent. “This is a public space. Anyone can pass through.”
Who else could be so oblivious to others’ expressions?
Everyone else in the cafeteria had already cleared out the moment Li Shenjue and Ruan Jiaojiao walked in, staying as far away as possible.
No one dared to interrupt Li Shenjue and Ruan Jiaojiao’s flirting except Bai Yao. Not only did she interrupt, but she also stood there without leaving.
Li Shenjue’s tone was cold. “I thought that after all these years at university, you’d have learned some manners.”
Bai Yao smiled, her dazzling face filled with bold arrogance. “I’ve been standing here holding this tray for quite a while, but you never moved aside. Seems like being a commander hasn’t taught you any manners either. What can you expect from an ordinary college student like me?”
As it turned out, the spot where Li Shenjue and Ruan Jiaojiao had been putting on their “red-eyed, give-you-my-life” romance scene was right where people were supposed to place their trays after eating. The two of them had been blocking the space for so long that Bai Yao hadn’t been able to set hers down.
It was the first time anyone had dared to mock Li Shenjue like that, and his face turned dark with fury.
Ruan Jiaojiao bit her lip. Though she often claimed to dislike Li Shenjue, she still couldn’t help standing up for him now. Facing Bai Yao directly, she said, “Miss Bai.”
But just as she spoke, her eyes fell on the leftover fish on Bai Yao’s tray. For some reason, a wave of nausea hit her. She clapped a hand over her mouth and retched twice.
Li Shenjue immediately held her. “Jiaojiao, what’s wrong?”
Ruan Jiaojiao stammered, “I-I suddenly feel a little sick…”
The ship suddenly lurched violently. Red alarm lights flashed as the system’s warning echoed through the vast hall, “Starboard under fire! Hull damage detected! Warning, hull damage detected!”
Li Shenjue’s brows furrowed sharply. “What’s going on!”
Van Gogh ran over. “Commander, it’s space pirates!”
