The village secretary waved his hand. “Oh, it’s just because a new little nurse came to our village clinic. And let me tell you, that young girl is really pretty. Somehow, a rumor spread that the little girl likes planting strawberries, so all the young men in the village started planting strawberries. Each one was competing with the others, and the strawberries they grew became more and more delicious.”

The village secretary spoke cheerfully. “Who would have thought that the young girl liked strawberries because her usually reclusive partner loved eating them? But those young men’s efforts weren’t in vain. They ended up fostering a strawberry-growing trend in our village, and it has even brought us a good income.”

This is probably what it means by “an unintentional willow planting makes for shade.”

Reporter Xiao Wang asked, “May I interview that nurse and her boyfriend?”

The village secretary quickly waved his hand. “No, no. Nurse Bai is very low-key and doesn’t like to be in the spotlight, while her boyfriend is far too introverted. He doesn’t dare to meet people usually, and even if he goes out, he covers his head and face. He follows Nurse Bai everywhere she goes. They have helped our village so much, so please don’t disturb them.”

Reporter Xiao Wang felt a little regretful. For some reason, he recalled the quarreling yet affectionate couple he had seen before. Strangely, however, he could no longer remember their faces.

On the rural path, Bai Yao was riding her little scooter, with the young man behind her holding her waist with one hand and guarding the basket of freshly picked strawberries with the other. He leaned his face against her shoulder and lazily let out a yawn.

Bai Yao said, “I just bought you a whole bag of crushed ice yesterday, such a big one! And you secretly finished it all in one day! Next time I catch you doing something like this, I’ll deduct your pocket money!”

Fu Huai shivered in fright. He pursed his lips but still argued, “I saw they were about to expire and was worried Yao Yao would get a stomachache, so I finished them for you!”

Bai Yao gave him a side glance. “Do you think I didn’t check the expiration date? They won’t expire for another half a year. Why are you so anxious?!”

Fu Huai said in a spoiled tone, “You’re yelling at me over crushed ice!”

Bai Yao replied, “I won’t just yell at you, I’ll scold you too!”

Fu Huai wasn’t the least bit worried. “The village secretary said no violence is allowed. Besides, you wouldn’t bear to hit me.”

He looked smug, proud as if he had a tail that could wag up to the sky.

Bai Yao nodded. “Very well, then your reward for this month is canceled.”

She added, “There’s a pothole ahead, hold on tight.”

Fu Huai obediently hugged her waist tighter. Amid the jolting, he tried to act coquettish to soften her heart. Blinking his dark, glistening eyes, he started chanting, “Yao Yao Yao Yao Yao Yao— I know I was wrong, I won’t eat crushed ice anymore. From now on, I’ll eat lots and lots of vegetables. You’ll love me every day and always give me rewards, okay?”

Pressing against her back, his voice was tender and coaxing. “Yao Yao, I’ll give you all my favorite strawberries. Please don’t stop loving me, alright?”

His hand gently rubbed her waist as he leaned into her, his voice syrupy and wheedling. “Okay? Yao Yao Yao Yao Yao Yao—”

As long as she didn’t answer him, he could keep chanting endlessly.

Bai Yao deliberately kept a stern face, refusing to respond.

Fu Huai had never been ignored for this long. Gradually realizing the seriousness of the matter, his voice lost its pretense and was filled only with fear and anxiety. “Yao Yao, please don’t ignore me. I know I was wrong, I really know I was wrong. Don’t ignore me. I won’t eat crushed ice anymore, I… I don’t want strawberries either, and I don’t need pocket money. Just please talk to me…”

He tightly gripped the hem of her dress, sobbing softly, unable to stop.

The scooter stopped in front of their little home.

Bai Yao got off, while Fu Huai still sat frozen on the seat, clutching the basket of strawberries. His misty eyes looked at her, fragile as though he could shatter at the slightest touch.

Bai Yao remained stern. “Eating that much crushed ice all at once could easily upset your stomach and make you sick.”

Fu Huai pressed his lips together, stretching his arms toward her. His beautiful eyes, hazy with tears, brimmed with longing for her.

Bai Yao did not walk over to hug him. She said, “I can buy you the things you like, but you cannot just eat recklessly. Last time you ate too many strawberries, and in the middle of the night, your stomach hurt from being too full. Have you forgotten?”

Fu Huai choked with emotion. “Yao Yao, I haven’t forgotten.”

Bai Yao: “So?”

His voice trembled. “From now on, I’ll listen to you. I won’t eat recklessly again.”

Bai Yao: “Do you really know you were wrong?”

He nodded. “I know.”

Bai Yao relaxed and walked toward him. The next moment, he could not wait to jump down from the scooter, pulling her into his arms and burying his face in her neck, pitifully sniffing.

She stroked the back of his head. “I don’t want to be harsh with you either, but if you get sick, I’ll feel bad too.”

He hummed softly in reply, his voice nasal and thick.

Fu Huai did not know how he came into this world, nor did he himself know what the meaning of his existence was.

In his memory, he had experienced too many people speaking of so-called “love” with eyes full of desire, and had also experienced people staring at him with infatuated gazes, then speaking fiercely of their so-called possessiveness.

But with Bai Yao, whether it was her love for him or even her sternness, none of it was connected to desire.

With her, he was always just an ordinary yet special lover.

He, who was supposed to be the one adored by others, suddenly became the one who had fallen into deep infatuation. The deeper he sank, the clearer he understood that he could not live without her.

Bai Yao cupped his face, kissed him, and with a smile said, “Come on, let’s go inside and wash the strawberries to eat.”

Fu Huai obediently let her lead him inside. His voice still carried a trace of sobs. “Yao Yao, can I still have a reward today?”

Bai Yao sighed. “Yes, yes, yes, alright!”

Fu Huai instantly broke into a grin, striding forward and pulling her toward the house instead. “Yao Yao, I’m hungry. Let’s eat dinner earlier today!”

Bai Yao held back the urge to complain.

Why he wanted an early dinner, could she really not guess?

Fu Huai said with great enthusiasm, “Today at home I already washed the clothes and hung them out to dry, and before going out I even cut the vegetables. Yao Yao, tonight I’ll do the dishes, so you can go shower earlier.”

Bai Yao responded with an “oh.” “You didn’t tear my clothes again, did you?”

Fu Huai’s guilty eyes flickered nervously.

Bai Yao: “Fu Huai!”

He ran into the house. “I’ll sew them back, don’t hit me!”

Bai Yao chased after him, not even noticing her hairpin falling to the ground. “You’ve got guts, stop right there!”

Fu Huai: “I don’t have guts!”

Outside the little courtyard where strawberries grew, the shadows of trees dappled the wheat fields, everywhere bursting with the vitality of green.

The boys hiding in all directions quietly revealed half their faces. Their eyes were fixed on the hairpin lying on the ground, and almost at the same time, they rushed toward it.

Ten minutes later, Bai Yao came out of the house. She searched around but did not find the thing she had dropped. She wondered if perhaps she had lost it on the way back.

Fu Huai came running out, grabbing her hand excitedly. “Yao Yao, let’s eat strawberries together!”

Bai Yao followed him inside. “Don’t eat too many, or you won’t have room for dinner.”

He sweetly replied, “Got it!”

At the moment they stepped inside the gate, his gaze swept faintly over the trees, the wheat fields, and the bushes…

They saw each other as hideous impostors, yet because they shared the same memory, there was a tacit understanding between them.

They would never appear together before Bai Yao.

A moment later, the young man curled his lips into a disdainful smile. As long as he remained, he would stick to Bai Yao’s side and never give those impostors a chance to slip in.

At dusk, the white house’s door closed.

In the dark corners, pairs of jealous eyes were filled with desire for the girl. That intense emotion kept crashing within them, making them even gloomier and more frightening.

I really want it, the Yao Yao that belongs only to him.

I don’t need to rush. One day, one day… I will snatch Yao Yao back from the imposter.

——This was the shared conviction of all “Fu Huai.”
