Chapter 99: You’re Like a Clown

Would he consider her feelings and tactfully decline?

Or would he respond harshly, drawing a clear line between them?

Yet, no one expected what happened next.

Long Peiye didn’t show even a hint of extra emotion.

He wasn’t angry or impatient.

He simply gazed calmly at the frenzied Li Hong with an unreadable expression,

as if watching a ridiculous clown who had nothing to do with him.

Then, his thin lips parted, and he uttered just six words: “You’re like a clown.”

His voice was soft, yet it pierced through Li Hong’s final defenses like the sharpest ice pick—precise, ruthless, and merciless.

Those words wounded her more deeply than any vicious insult or cold rejection.

They thoroughly and brutally crushed her pitiful, laughable self-esteem, grinding it to dust!

Clown.

The two words gripped Li Hong’s throat like venomous pliers,

cutting off her screams and madness abruptly.

Only her heavy, desperate gasps remained in the air.

Crack.

It felt as if something inside her chest had shattered—

shattered so completely that not a single piece could be pieced back together.

She finally understood: from beginning to end, Long Peiye had never taken her seriously.

Her infatuation, her admiration, her desperate attempts to fight for him—

in his eyes, they were nothing but a clumsy, absurd performance,

a joke that belonged to her alone.

Her love had all been thrown to the dogs!

No—not to the dogs!

Li Hong’s pupils contracted sharply, her scattered focus suddenly zeroing in on the figure Long Peiye had been shielding behind him all along.

Xu Xiangsi!

It was her! It was all because of Xu Xiangsi, that wretched woman!

She was the one who stole Long Peiye! She was the one who turned him into this cold, unfeeling man!

If not for her, Battalion Commander Long would never have treated me like this!

It was all her fault!

“Heh… heh…” Unintelligible rasps escaped her throat, like a dying beast.

Her lips trembled as she muttered under her breath, her words too fragmented for anyone to decipher.

Just as Wang Zhengwei frowned, considering whether to have someone escort her out—

Li Hong jerked her head up!

Her bloodshot eyes blazed with a venomous glare!

“Xu Xiangsi!!”

She shrieked and lunged at Xu Xiangsi like a crazed leopardess,

her neatly trimmed but sharp nails arcing menacingly under the light, aimed directly at Xu Xiangsi’s stunningly beautiful face!

Yet—

Long Peiye’s gaze remained as cold as frost.

From the moment he uttered the word “clown,” his attention had never left Li Hong.

He knew all too well what a woman blinded by jealousy was capable of.

Just as those gleaming nails were about to scratch Xu Xiangsi’s face—

In the blink of an eye!

Long Peiye moved.

Without even shifting his upper body, he swiftly raised his leg and delivered a sharp kick!

Fast! Precise! Ruthless!

Thud! A dull impact echoed.

Li Hong, without even grazing the hem of Xu Xiangsi’s clothes, was sent flying backward like a ragged sack.

She flew straight into the group of Arts Troupe female soldiers standing dumbfounded behind her, crashing into them with a heavy thud.

Especially Bai Rumeng, who bore the brunt of it!

“Ah—!” Bai Rumeng let out a piercing scream, stumbling backward from the tremendous impact and bumping into the shoulder that Xu Xiangsi had previously injured. The pain was so intense that tears instantly welled in her eyes.

As for Li Hong, after crashing into this human cushion, she slid limply to the floor, her eyelids fluttering before she completely lost consciousness.

Even louder than Bai Rumeng’s scream was the sudden, deathly silence that fell over the office.

Everyone was stunned by this swift and unexpected turn of events.

Long Peiye slowly retracted his foot, his demeanor as calm as if he had merely brushed off nonexistent dust from his trousers.

He turned his head toward Wang Zhengwei, who was standing there utterly dumbfounded, and asked in a composed tone, “Commissar, this… shouldn’t count as intentional assault, should it?”

Wang Zhengwei’s eyelid twitched violently.

What could he say? Intentional assault?

What a joke!

It was perfectly clear that Long Peiye had acted out of urgent concern to protect his wife, shielding his revolutionary partner right in the office, in front of him, the commissar.

Sure, his method was a bit heavy-handed, but Li Hong was the one who had lunged forward like a madwoman!

Was he supposed to stand by and watch Xu Xiangsi get her face scratched?

If word got out, how could he continue serving as commissar? What would become of the unit’s discipline?

Wang Zhengwei saw the situation with perfect clarity—there was no way to delve deeper into this.

He could only shoot Long Peiye a fierce glare, silently accusing this troublemaker of stirring up chaos, and in the end, he chose to remain silent.

However, Xu Xiangsi did not stay silent.

Meeting Long Peiye’s gaze, she subtly but unmistakably gave him a bright, approving thumbs-up.

Her clear almond-shaped eyes showed not a trace of fear, only undisguised admiration.

Well done.

When Li Hong had charged at her like a rabid dog moments earlier, Xu Xiangsi had already tensed up, ready to retaliate.

But the thought had only flickered through her mind before she forcefully suppressed it.

What a joke.

Her current persona was that of a delicate, frail beauty—someone too weak to even truss a chicken, who would pant after walking just a few steps.

If she had cleanly thrown Li Hong to the ground with a shoulder throw, wouldn’t that completely shatter her image?

Besides, there was a perfectly capable man standing right beside her.

If he couldn’t even protect her from a sudden attack like this, then aside from being good-looking and physically strong, he’d only be fit to go home, do the laundry, cook meals, and serve as a mere decoration.

Fortunately, Long Peiye had not disappointed her.

That kick had sent her heart soaring with delight.

And Long Peiye clearly had no intention of letting the instigator off easily.

Still holding onto Xu Xiangsi’s arm, he turned his sharp, blade-like gaze back to Wang Zhengwei. “Commissar, you and all the comrades present witnessed what just happened.”

His voice was not loud, but each word was clear and resonant: “Comrade Li Hong, at the slightest disagreement, attempted to publicly assault and injure someone.”

“In my personal opinion, an individual with such problematic ideology and extreme behavior is entirely unfit to remain in our glorious revolutionary ranks.”

“I request that the organization deal with her severely!”

Wang Zhengwei’s temples throbbed.

This young man truly knew how to press his advantage.

Yet, everything Long Peiye said was undeniably reasonable, leaving him no room for rebuttal.

He nodded gravely, signaling his acceptance. “This matter will be handled.”

But Long Peiye was not finished.

He turned around and quite naturally drew Xu Xiangsi closer into his embrace, his previously stern face instantly shifting to reveal a trace of evident worry and tension.

“Political Commissar, as you know, my wife has poor health—she was just discharged from the hospital recently.”

“After such a fright today, I’m afraid she’ll have nightmares tonight and her old illness will flare up again.”

“So you see…”
