Chapter 98: By What Right

Amid the eerie silence, a deep, magnetic male voice spoke unhurriedly.

It was Long Peiye.

He had been standing silently beside Xu Xiangsi like a guardian deity.

Now, he finally spoke: “Let me add something.”

His gaze wasn’t fixed on Bai Rumeng or Wang Zhengwei, but gently rested on Xu Xiangsi beside him.

The adoration in his eyes was so palpable it seemed about to overflow like water.

“Washing clothes and cooking – I did all these things,” he admitted frankly, his voice calm yet firm.

Bai Rumeng’s eyes lit up, ready to speak.

But Long Peiye didn’t even glance at her as he continued: “But this has nothing to do with whether she’s some kind of young lady.”

He paused briefly, each word carrying weight.

“Simply because I want to.”

“I want to cook for my wife, I want to wash her clothes.”

“I enjoy taking care of her, spoiling her.”

Boom!

These words exploded like thunder in Bai Rumeng and Li Hong’s minds!

Their eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, faces filled with disbelief!

What… what was this situation?

Wasn’t this equivalent to publicly admitting that Long Peiye was willingly “enslaved” by a Capitalism young lady?

Li Hong’s nails dug deeply into her palms, the flames of jealousy nearly shooting from her eyes!

By what right!

By what right could Xu Xiangsi, this useless woman, receive such preferential treatment from Battalion Commander Long!

But what could they say?

The couple was perfectly content with their arrangement – what right did outsiders have to interfere?

His words had completely cut off all their avenues of attack!

Bai Rumeng’s mind raced rapidly. Steeling herself, she immediately found a new angle.

Her eyes lighting up, she shrilled: “Battalion Commander Long! You treat her so well, but what about her! Has she ever considered you?”

“You train so hard every day in the army, working yourself to exhaustion, yet you still have to serve this young lady when you come home!”

“Has she ever shown you any concern? This is pure selfishness – she doesn’t love you at all!”

These words couldn’t be more venomous.

She had directly escalated from household matters to the level of marital affection.

Yet after hearing this, not even a ripple crossed Long Peiye’s face.

He didn’t even bother to raise an eyebrow, merely glancing at Bai Rumeng with a look one might give a fool.

“So what?”

Four lightly spoken words carried the weight of mountains.

He turned his head, gazing deeply at Xu Xiangsi, the tenderness in his eyes enough to drown a person: “I relish it.”

“!!!”

Li Hong and Bai Rumeng stood frozen as if struck by lightning.

They felt as if their faces had been brutally slapped, burning with shame.

Relish it? He actually said he relished it?!

This was simply… simply madness!

As if their shock wasn’t enough, Long Peiye’s thin lips curved into a mocking smile.

“Speaking of which, I find it strange,” his gaze swept over Bai Rumeng and Li Hong’s alternating pale and flushed faces, “are all comrades in your Arts Troupe this idle?”

“You even want to meddle in private matters between my wife and me behind closed doors?”

His voice wasn’t loud, yet carried compelling pressure.

“And you meddle this extensively?”

The words, like a poisoned dagger, plunged deep into the hearts of Bai Rumeng and Li Hong.

Their faces instantly flushed to the color of pig liver, a mix of shame and fury making them wish they could vanish into the ground!

Indeed.

Ultimately, this was someone else’s family matter!

What right did they have to be so aggressive here, like gossiping old women catching someone in adultery?

Bai Rumeng finally understood.

Today, they had lost, utterly and completely.

To persist any further would only make them look more like clowns.

She gritted her molars so hard it seemed her jaw might crack, her gaze so venomous it looked as if she wanted to carve two chunks of flesh from Xu Xiangsi.

Just you wait, Xu Xiangsi.

She thought viciously in her heart.

Your eloquence today is only because there’s no evidence!

Once the items I asked someone to send from Shanghai arrive…

Those letters and objects that prove you never truly severed ties with your old Capitalist grandfather!

When the time comes, with both witnesses and physical evidence present!

Let’s see how you try to weasel your way out then!

Bai Rumeng chose temporary restraint, transforming all her resentment and venom into the most sinister schemes in her heart.

She could endure it, but Li Hong could not!

The poisonous flames of jealousy had burned away her last shred of rationality.

Her bloodshot eyes were fixed intently on Long Peiye, as if trying to see through him, to burn two holes right through him.

“I don’t believe it!” she squeezed out these four words through gritted teeth, her voice as hoarse as an old bellows. “Why?”

Her voice suddenly rose, sharp and piercing!

“Why does Xu Xiangsi deserve it?!”

This question, more than being directed at others, seemed like she was interrogating herself, forcing herself to confront this reality she couldn’t accept!

The next second, she completely broke down.

“Why do you like Xu Xiangsi and not me?!”

“What exactly is it about me that’s worse than her?!”

The desperate, hysterical scream, filled with reckless madness, echoed through the political commissar’s office.

The air seemed to freeze at that moment.

Everyone was stunned by this sudden confession—or rather, this desperate, scorched-earth interrogation.

This… this was laying bare all the words hidden deep in her heart!

Not just the few people in the office.

Even those outside the door, eavesdropping through cracks with necks craned, wore expressions of utter bewilderment.

Looking at Li Hong now—disheveled, face contorted, looking like a madwoman…

Any sane man, when faced with a choice between the gentle, composed Xu Xiangsi and her, would know which way to go, right?

Was there even a question?

Even the female soldiers from the Arts Troupe who had come with Bai Rumeng looked at Li Hong differently now.

They cast sidelong glances at her, their eyes filled with shock, disdain, and a hint of relief.

Before coming, they had privately agreed among themselves—fair competition.

Whoever could win Battalion Commander Long’s favor would do so by their own merits.

But looking at Li Hong’s behavior now…

Fair? She probably didn’t even have those two words in her dictionary!

One could easily imagine that even if Battalion Commander Long had chosen any one of them instead of Xu Xiangsi today,

Li Hong, in this state, would surely have raised hell, fighting to the bitter end!

At that moment, the same thought crossed all their minds.

Through this incident, they had truly come to understand what kind of person Li Hong was—from now on, they needed to keep their distance from her.

Of course, despite their disdain, everyone’s gaze ultimately converged squarely on Long Peiye.

Their hearts were itching with curiosity!

Faced with such a brutally public confession and questioning, what kind of answer would Battalion Commander Long give?
