Chapter 92: Tell Me, What Exactly Happened?

Political Commissar Wang exhaled heavily, finally feeling the suffocating atmosphere in the office ease slightly.

He sat back down, massaging his throbbing temples, and turned his gaze to Long Peiye, who had remained silent since entering the room.

“Comrade Long Peiye.”

His voice carried a trace of weariness.

“Tell me, what exactly happened?”

Dealing with these women’s affairs was more troublesome than fighting on the battlefield!

Long Peiye’s hand supporting Xu Xiangsi’s arm never loosened its grip.

He didn’t even glance at Li Hong or Bai Rumeng, calmly responding: “Reporting to the Political Commissar, when I returned home, my wife was already surrounded by them.”

“As for what specifically occurred, I wasn’t present at the scene and cannot comment.”

He slightly lowered his head to look at Xu Xiangsi in his arms, his gaze instantly softening: “Let her speak for herself.”

In an instant, all eyes in the office focused on Xu Xiangsi.

That pale, frail woman who seemed like she could be blown over by a gust of wind.

Political Commissar Wang’s gaze also fell upon her, carrying both scrutiny and a hint of inquiry.

Xu Xiangsi gently freed herself from Long Peiye’s support and stood upright on her own.

Her voice wasn’t loud, even somewhat weak, but her enunciation was exceptionally clear, like small stones dropping with distinct impact.

“Reporting to the Political Commissar, this afternoon I was resting in bed at home.”

“I had a high fever a few days ago, which you should be aware of. Today my condition had just begun to improve…”

She paused, her gaze slowly sweeping over the several female soldiers who were already visibly restless.

“Then these comrades suddenly appeared at my doorstep, demanding I open the door.”

Her eyes settled on one particular female soldier named Fang Jie, the corners of her lips curling into a faint smile.

“What I’m saying is the truth, isn’t it?”

Fang Jie’s body trembled violently as if pricked by a needle.

She dared not look at Bai Rumeng, even less at Li Hong, only staring fixedly at her own shoe tips, her throat dry.

Under Xu Xiangsi’s calm yet sharp gaze, she ultimately couldn’t resist the pressure and gave an almost imperceptible nod.

Xu Xiangsi’s gaze shifted to another female soldier.

“I didn’t recognize any of the comrades at the time, and out of safety concerns, I didn’t immediately open the door.”

“Then this Comrade Li Hong began violently pounding on my door with her hands or some other object.”

She slightly turned her head to look at Li Hong: “I was afraid the door would be damaged, so I went and opened it.”

“Is that correct?”

The female soldier under her gaze turned deathly pale, her lips trembling as she also nodded.

Xu Xiangsi seemed quite satisfied with their cooperation.

She took a deep breath, as if somewhat physically exhausted, but her eyes remained bright.

“After I opened the door, I didn’t use harsh language or speak disrespectfully to you, did I?”

This time, the remaining female soldiers, as if infected, rushed to nod in unison, their movements exaggerated like pounding garlic.

Very good. The meaningful smile at the corner of Xu Xiangsi’s lips deepened.

She finally returned her gaze to Political Commissar Wang’s face.

“But, Political Commissar Wang, do you know what happened next?”

“As soon as I opened the door, this Comrade Li Hong, with her face covered in blood, didn’t greet me but instead started shouting abuses at me.”

“She cursed me for not opening the door immediately, wasting her precious revolutionary time.”

Xu Xiangsi’s tone remained calm throughout, as if narrating some trivial matter unrelated to herself.

After speaking, she once again glanced at the female soldiers who had long been scared out of their wits and softly asked, “In what I just said, is there a single word that wronged her?”

This time, the female soldiers nodded even faster and more vigorously.

They were afraid that if they nodded too slowly, this blame would somehow inexplicably fall on their own heads.

From an angle unseen by others, Bai Rumeng’s eyebrows furrowed tightly into a knot.

She always felt there was something off about Xu Xiangsi’s way of speaking.

Sentence by sentence, link by link, it was like weaving an invisible net.

Yet, everything she said was the truth, acknowledged by the female soldiers themselves with their nods.

She could find no flaw in it.

This feeling of being led by the nose made her inexplicably uneasy.

She could only suppress the irritation in her heart and patiently continue listening.

A faint, self-mocking smile appeared on Xu Xiangsi’s pale face. “Reporting to Political Commissar, every person has a temper.”

Her voice remained soft but clearly reached everyone’s ears.

“I’ve just recovered from a serious illness, resting at home without causing any trouble. I bear no past grudges or recent grievances with these comrades.”

“But the moment I opened the door, I was pointed at and subjected to a torrent of abuse.”

She scanned the room, her gaze finally settling on Wang Zhengwei. “Political Commissar, tell me, who wouldn’t be angry in such a situation?”

The female soldiers, who had been keeping their heads down, instinctively wanted to nod again.

Her words made sense.

But just as their heads began to move, a sharp, furious shout erupted!

“You’re lying!” Bai Rumeng could no longer contain herself and abruptly stepped forward!

Pointing at Xu Xiangsi, her voice trembling slightly with agitation, she said, “Li Hong never cursed at you!”

Everyone in the office was startled by this sudden outburst.

Xu Xiangsi, however, didn’t even bat an eyelid.

She merely cast a faint glance at Bai Rumeng, a trace of almost imperceptible pity in her eyes.

“Oh?” she uttered softly. “Then I’d like to ask Comrade Bai Rumeng.”

“What is your definition of ‘cursing’?”

“Does it only count as cursing if my ancestors for eighteen generations are insulted?”

She let out a light laugh, though the mirth didn’t reach her eyes. “In my view, when a group of strangers comes to my doorstep, banging on my door as if they’re about to raid my home—”

“That in itself is a demonstration, a provocation.”

Her words were measured but carried immense pressure. “Comrade Bai, do you think cursing is only about the words used?”

“Let me tell you, it’s not.”

“It’s the tone.” She paused, her gaze shifting to Li Hong, scrutinizing her.

“She didn’t say who she was or why she was here. The first thing she did was demand of me—”

Xu Xiangsi deliberately imitated Li Hong’s unreasonable tone from that time.

“‘Why did you take so long to open the door!'”

“That tone, that look—it felt as if I owed her eight million.”

A sharp curve lifted the corner of her lips. “Oh, wait, that’s not right.”

“That feeling is more like I’m the doorman or servant at her house.”

“As soon as Her Majesty opens her golden mouth and stands outside the door, I have to flash over immediately and open the door with utmost respect.”

“This is the correct way, isn’t it?”

“You…” Bai Rumeng was left speechless by these barbed words, her face alternating between red and white.

She couldn’t utter a single word in retort.
