Chapter 86: Sinister Smile

A towering rage instantly erupted from Long Peiye’s chest!

He didn’t even have time to think.

His body’s instincts had already overtaken everything!

“Get away!”

Long Peiye lifted his long leg clad in military boots and, without even looking, delivered a fierce kick to Li Hong’s side!

“Thud—!”

A dull thud echoed.

Li Hong was sent flying like a ragged sack, propelled by an immense force!

She flew over a meter away before crashing heavily onto the nearby vegetable patch that had yet to sprout, stirring up a cloud of dust.

At the last moment, Long Peiye had held back seventy percent of his strength.

Otherwise, with the full force of his kick, Li Hong would have broken at least three ribs.

Even so, Li Hong immediately lost consciousness. After twitching a couple of times in the vegetable patch, she fell completely silent.

The entire courtyard was deathly still.

Long Peiye didn’t spare her another glance.

He rushed to Xu Xiangsi’s side in three swift strides, lifting her from the ground and pulling her tightly into his embrace.

“Xiangsi!” His voice trembled with a fear he hadn’t even realized he felt. “Are you alright? Did they hit you? Where are you hurt?”

In his arms, Xu Xiangsi shook her head slightly, her pale face now as white as a sheet.

She lifted her tear-filled eyes to look at Long Peiye, her gaze overflowing with terror and dependence.

“I… I’m fine…” Her voice was soft and faint, heavy with a nasal tone. “I was just… scared…”

She pointed a trembling hand toward the damaged courtyard gate.

“They… they barged in without saying a word… and tried to hit me as soon as they entered…”

Long Peiye’s gaze followed her finger to the precarious gate.

His pupils contracted sharply.

His face, already tense with anger, darkened as if dripping with ink.

Slowly, he turned his head, his deep eyes now harboring a terrifying storm. His icy, piercing gaze swept over Fang Jie and the other female soldiers still frozen in place.

Finally, his eyes settled on Bai Rumeng, who was being supported by two female soldiers, her shoulder bleeding and her face contorted in pain.

“My wife has no grievance with any of you.” Long Peiye’s voice was low but sharp as ice, each word striking deep into their hearts. “Why did you break into my home to bully her?!”

The remaining female soldiers from the Arts Troupe, including Fang Jie, were utterly stunned.

???

Brother, are you seeing this wrong?

Take another look?

Are you sure?

Just who is bullying whom here?!

Long Peiye’s accusation was like a massive rock crashing into the still pond of silence.

The remaining female soldiers, including Fang Jie, exchanged pale-faced glances, their lips trembling, but no words came out.

Bullying?

Who’s bullying whom?!

Was Li Hong, with her bloodied face and knocked out cold by a kick, fake?

Was Comrade Bai, with her bleeding shoulder and face pale from pain, fake?

But…

But they were in the wrong!

They were the ones who had barged into the courtyard first!

They were the ones who had broken down the gate!

They were the ones ganging up on a sick person!

No matter where this matter was brought up, they couldn’t claim any justification!

For a moment, everyone fell silent, forced to stand there enduring Long Peiye’s murderous gaze.

Just then, Bai Rumeng, enduring the excruciating pain in her shoulder, was supported by two female soldiers as she stumbled forward unsteadily.

She lifted her face, twisted with pain and fury, yet her eyes instantly welled up with grievance and tears as she looked at Long Peiye.

“Battalion Commander Long…”

Her voice trembled the moment she spoke, sounding utterly pitiful.

“You’ve misunderstood… We weren’t here to bully anyone…”

Pointing at Xu Xiangsi, who was shrinking in Long Peiye’s embrace, she accused with a tearful voice, “We just… just came to find Comrade Xu Xiangsi, wanting to have a proper talk with her… Who knew, who knew she wouldn’t say a word and just picked up a brick to hit people!”

At these words, Xu Xiangsi in Long Peiye’s arms immediately rolled her eyes.

The next second, her small hands tightly clutched the front of Long Peiye’s uniform.

She lifted her pale little face, her large eyes filled with tears and panic, staring straight at Long Peiye like a terrified little rabbit.

“She’s lying…”

Her voice was soft and faint, heavy with a nasal tone, so full of grievance it seemed she might shatter at any moment.

Long Peiye’s heart instantly clenched tightly at her words, “She’s lying.”

He didn’t even hesitate for a second.

He lowered his head, his large hand gently patting Xu Xiangsi’s thin back, his voice unprecedentedly soft and firm: “I know.”

“Don’t be afraid. With me here, no one can touch you.”

After comforting his little wife in his arms, he suddenly looked up, the tenderness in his eyes vanishing completely, replaced only by icy mockery as he gazed at Bai Rumeng.

“Do you take me for a fool?”

Now!

While Long Peiye’s attention was entirely on Bai Rumeng, Xu Xiangsi quietly peeked half her face out from the crook of his arm.

Her tear-filled eyes met Bai Rumeng’s furious gaze, and the previous fear and grievance instantly disappeared without a trace.

In their place was a sly, triumphant smirk.

She even quickly stuck her tongue out at Bai Rumeng, then ducked back just as fast, continuing to play the trembling, pitiful victim.

!!!

Bai Rumeng’s pupils contracted sharply!

A surge of rage rushed to her head!

She saw it!

She saw it clearly!

That little bitch was making faces at her! She was provocative!

“Ah—!”

Bai Rumeng was so furious she nearly choked, her finger trembling as she pointed at Xu Xiangsi.

“Long Peiye! She’s deceiving you! It’s all an act! Did you see? She just…”

“You’re the one who’s acting.”

Long Peiye cut her off coldly without letting her finish, simultaneously tightening his arm around Xu Xiangsi.

His gaze, sharp as a blade, fell on the dilapidated courtyard gate.

“How did my courtyard gate get broken?”

He let out a cold laugh, the sarcasm in his tone almost overflowing.

“So this is how you came to ‘have a proper talk’ with my wife? Kick down someone’s gate, and then have a proper talk?”

He shifted his gaze back to Bai Rumeng, his eyes looking at her as if she were some colossal joke.

“I wasn’t aware that my wife—a sickly woman who never steps beyond her own courtyard—would have anything worth ‘discussing’ with elites like you from the Arts Troupe.”

“Or perhaps,” he paused, each word seeming to be squeezed through gritted teeth, “you all thought I, Long Peiye, was dead?”

Bai Rumeng was rendered speechless by his barrage of questions.
