Chapter 83: What Gives Her the Right? How Dare She!

This woman, how could this woman twist right and wrong like this! So shameless!

Li Hong trembled like a leaf in the autumn wind, her lips quivering without uttering a single word. Tears swirled frantically in her eyes, filled with humiliation and resentment.

Standing nearby, Bai Rumeng’s face had long turned as dark as the bottom of a pot.

In her heart, she had cursed Li Hong no less than a hundred times.

Useless!

Truly a useless fool who can’t accomplish anything but only ruins everything!

Such a perfectly laid trap, such a great pretext, had been completely ruined by her careless words!

When Li Hong had been provoked by Xu Xiangsi’s words and turned to leave earlier, Bai Rumeng had already cursed her inwardly.

After barely stabilizing the situation and launching another attack, what was the result?

She had been effortlessly trapped by that fox spirit Xu Xiangsi again!

All passion but not a shred of brains!

This wasn’t a teammate—this was a pig teammate through and through!

She couldn’t let this fool Li Hong continue running amok!

Bai Rumeng took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the fury in her heart, and immediately stepped forward.

Her gaze sharp as a blade, she shot it directly at Xu Xiangsi.

“Xu Xiangsi, stop trying to divert the topic and confuse everyone here!”

Bai Rumeng’s voice was clear and stern, carrying the authoritative presence unique to an Arts Troupe cadre, instantly pulling everyone’s attention back.

“You know perfectly well what your background is!”

“You should understand that your very existence is a ticking time bomb for Battalion Commander Long!”

“If you truly care for him, if you truly have his best interests at heart, you should divorce him immediately, right now!”

“Instead of dragging down his brilliant future like this, letting him suffer undue consequences because of your identity!”

These words were spoken with righteous indignation, lofty and high-sounding.

As if she were the one who genuinely had Long Peiye’s interests at heart.

Xu Xiangsi lazily lifted her eyelids to look at this woman who had suddenly jumped out.

She stared at Bai Rumeng for a few seconds, her beautiful eyes slowly widening bit by bit.

As if finally recognizing something, an expression of sudden realization mixed with surprise and delight appeared on her face.

“Wow!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with disbelief. “So it’s you!”

Xu Xiangsi’s tone carried an exaggerated apology and belated recognition.

“I didn’t recognize you last time! My apologies, my deepest apologies!”

“But you can’t blame me—after all, I’d never seen you before…”

Bai Rumeng was momentarily stunned by her sudden change in attitude.

What last time?

She was a bit slow to react.

But Xu Xiangsi’s almost “fawning” attitude instantly dissipated the displeasure Li Hong had caused in her heart.

See? In the end, she’s just a young girl who hasn’t seen much of the world.

She was merely relying on her quick wit earlier.

Now that I’ve stepped in, bringing out a cadre’s authority and reasoning, she immediately backs down, doesn’t she?

Bai Rumeng’s chin lifted slightly, her chest puffed out a bit, a sense of superiority welling up inside her.

She cleared her throat and responded in a reserved tone, like an elder lecturing a junior.

“It’s good that you recognize that.”

Little did she know, the moment her words fell.

Xu Xiangsi’s next sentence exploded like a thunderclap, reverberating through the small courtyard:

“Oh my! So you’re Long Peiye’s birth mother, my mother-in-law!”

“…”

“…?”

“…!”

The entire courtyard was deathly silent.

All the female soldiers’ eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, their mouths agape like thunderstruck quails.

The smug smile on Bai Rumeng’s face instantly froze.

She stood completely rigid, her mind a complete blank, utterly unable to process what she had just heard.

Mo… mother-in-law?

Who was her mother-in-law?!

Xu Xiangsi, however, acted as if she hadn’t noticed Bai Rumeng’s horrified expression at all and continued speaking casually.

Her face wore an extremely sincere, apologetic smile.

“Mother-in-law, please don’t blame me for not recognizing you earlier.”

“It’s mainly because…” She looked Bai Rumeng up and down, her brows slightly furrowed as if searching for the right words.

“Look at you, with such an… aged-looking face.”

“And so fierce and vicious, with ‘spiteful’ written all over your face.”

Xu Xiangsi clapped her hands, showing an “I’ve finally figured it out” expression.

“You perfectly match my stereotype of ‘mother-in-law’!”

“No wonder you’re so concerned about Long Peiye’s future! So he’s your own son! I understand now, I completely understand!”

Far away in the capital, the true matriarch of the Long family, Long Peiye’s biological mother who was watering orchids, suddenly sneezed loudly.

She rubbed her nose, feeling somewhat puzzled.

“Strange, who’s talking about me?”

“Why do I feel… like I just took an arrow to the knee?”

…

Back in the small courtyard, time seemed to freeze for a full ten seconds.

Bai Rumeng’s mind was like a tangled cassette tape, buzzing and completely blank.

What had she just heard?

Aged-looking?

Spiteful?

Mother-in-law?

Any one of these three words was enough to make her explode on the spot!

When these three words were combined by Xu Xiangsi in an extremely sincere, almost “complimentary” tone, their destructive power was no less than that of an atomic bomb!

Finally, the stiff, exquisitely lipsticked corners of Bai Rumeng’s mouth began to twitch uncontrollably.

Her well-maintained, proud face visibly changed colors – from white to red, then from red to purple.

It was like watching a dye workshop in action, a spectacular display.

“You… what nonsense are you spouting!”

These words were practically squeezed out from between Bai Rumeng’s teeth one by one, carrying a sharp, cat-like screech as if her tail had been stepped on.

She had known this woman had a sharp tongue since their last confrontation.

But she never expected this fox spirit to have such bloodless killing techniques!

What did she mean by an aged face?

Even if Bai Rumeng wasn’t an eighteen-year-old maiden anymore, she still had graceful charm! In the Arts Troupe, her appearance and temperament were still top-notch!

Throughout the entire compound, countless cadres and young men secretly admired her!

How dare this country bumpkin, this capitalist’s whelp! How could she!

Bai Rumeng trembled with rage, her heart contracting in waves of pain that made it almost impossible to breathe.

Xu Xiangsi merely raised an eyebrow lazily.

She looked leisurely at the woman before her who was about to spontaneously combust from anger, a mischievous curve forming at the corner of her mouth. “What?”

“Did I say something wrong?”

“Aren’t you Long Peiye’s biological mother?”

Bai Rumeng instinctively wanted to refute, but the words caught in her throat.

Of course she wasn’t!

But if she denied it now, what would that make her earlier righteous declaration of “doing it for Long Peiye’s future prospects”?

As an outsider, what right did she have to meddle in a married couple’s private affairs?

Wouldn’t this just confirm she had ulterior motives!
