Chapter 78: Looks Like You’ve Recovered Well

No.

He abruptly closed his eyes, cursing himself fiercely in his heart.

Long Peiye, you beast!

She came to you because she was scared, because she trusted you.

You can’t take advantage of her vulnerability!

He took a deep, forceful breath, then slowly exhaled, as if trying to expel the restless heat burning within him.

After repeating this several times, he finally managed to suppress the impulse that had nearly shattered his self-control.

He turned sideways, carefully pulled a corner of the quilt, and gently covered her exposed shoulder.

Having done this, he felt as if all his strength had been drained.

He closed his eyes and forced himself to sleep.

…

The next day.

As dawn barely broke, the piercing wake-up call shattered the morning tranquility of the island.

Long Peiye opened his eyes instantly, his gaze clear and alert without a trace of sleepiness.

He instinctively turned his head.

Beside him, Xu Xiangsi was still fast asleep.

She lay on her side, one hand tightly clutching the hem of his pajamas while the other rested obediently beside her cheek.

The faint morning light filtered through the window, casting a soft glow on her elegant and delicate face. Her long eyelashes created small shadows beneath her eyes.

In her sleep, she lacked the sharp wit and defensive thorns she carried during the day, appearing exceptionally docile, even… somewhat endearing.

Long Peiye’s eyes unconsciously darkened.

Especially when he recalled her active yet innocent closeness last night…

A surge of heat rose from his abdomen once again.

His throat tightened, and he immediately suppressed those improper thoughts. Quietly, he lifted the blanket and got out of bed.

His movements were so silent they made no sound.

Standing by the bed, he looked down at her for a moment before inexplicably reaching out to feel her forehead with the back of his hand, then gently touching her slender neck.

Good.

No fever.

It seemed the fever had completely subsided.

The heavy weight that had been pressing on Long Peiye’s heart all day finally lifted.

If the fever had persisted, he would have had to send her to the infirmary for a couple of days.

He withdrew his hand and turned to wash up.

By the time he left the barracks, the sky was fully bright.

Instead of heading directly to the training ground, he made a detour to the cafeteria.

As usual, he first fetched breakfast for his little wife, carefully packed it into a thermal container, and brought it back.

When Long Peiye pushed open the door to their home, his footsteps were extremely light.

Afraid of waking the person inside, he even gripped the doorknob tightly to prevent any noise.

At a glance, Xu Xiangsi was indeed still asleep in bed, bundled tightly in the quilt with only half her face and a messy fringe visible.

Her breathing was even, indicating she was sleeping deeply.

Long Peiye stood by the bed watching her for a while, his lips curling involuntarily.

This girl sure can sleep…

But then he reconsidered—she had just recovered from a fever and was still weak, so sleeping more was normal. However, skipping breakfast wasn’t an option. Her body had just started to improve; she couldn’t afford to go hungry again.

After hesitating for a moment, he leaned over and gently patted her shoulder. “Xiangsi, time to get up and eat.”

Xu Xiangsi reacted as if electrocuted, instantly grabbing his wrist and reflexively twisting it with some force!

She drowsily opened her eyes, still disoriented and unable to process what was happening.

When she finally got a clear look at the person before her and realized she was tightly gripping his wrist, her small face flushed crimson all the way to the tips of her ears. “…I-I didn’t mean to.”

“Not bad,” Long Peiye leaned closer to her, “Seems like you’ve recovered quite well.”

“Stop teasing!” Xu Xiangsi wanted to bury her face in the pillow, hiding all her embarrassment.

“I brought you breakfast.” Long Peiye raised the thermal container in his hand, then said seriously, “Hurry up and wash up. I’ll wait to eat with you.”

“Oh…” Xu Xiangsi’s voice was muffled as she slowly emerged from the blankets, though she couldn’t help stealing a few glances at him. She still felt too ashamed to face him properly after last night’s incident of barging into his room.

To her surprise, Long Peiye didn’t mention last night’s events at all, acting as if nothing had happened. He opened the thermal container himself, arranged the breakfast on the table, and even poured her a cup of warm water: “Since your stomach isn’t well, have something soft. There’s lean pork congee and steamed egg custard today. If you have an appetite, eat a bit more.”

“Mhm…” Xu Xiangsi obediently agreed. Whether it was because she became more docile after being sick, she sat down and quietly picked up her bowl to eat the congee. Every time she paused with her chopsticks, the man would urge her with “Have more if it’s not enough,” as if determined to feed her into a little chubby girl.

The atmosphere remained quiet and warm. Neither of them brought up last night’s incident of sharing a bed, as if it were just an insignificant little dream quietly buried deep in their hearts, with neither willing to be the first to acknowledge it.

When she finally swallowed the last mouthful of medicine, Xu Xiangsi breathed a sigh of relief, looking like a great burden had been lifted: “Alright, I’ve completed all tasks as requested. Can I graduate now?”

Long Peiye raised an eyebrow at her, his dark eyes carrying a hint of teasing: “Graduate? It’s not that easy! Rest at home today—no running around, and absolutely no going to the beach, understand? Otherwise…”

He paused here, “Otherwise I’ll add extra ghost stories tonight to make sure you remember!”

“Hmph!” Xu Xiangsi pouted, “Fine, I won’t go…”

After a moment’s thought, she couldn’t resist arguing: “It’s not that I’m afraid of ghost stories! I-I just know I’m not completely recovered yet…”

Long Peiye could tell she was being stubborn.

Struggling to hold back his laughter, he said: “Good, as long as you know… Otherwise, I’d really worry that someone might try another night raid tonight…”

“Stop talking about that!” Xu Xiangsi immediately flushed with both embarrassment and annoyance.

“Alright, alright, I’ll stop!” Long Peiye cleared his throat lightly, then spoke seriously again, “But if you feel unwell anywhere, don’t tough it out. Send someone to find me at the military base, understand?”

“Got it!” Xu Xiangsi waved her hand, wearing an expression that seemed eager for him to leave quickly to spare her further embarrassment.

Yet the corners of her mouth lifted slightly, revealing unconcealable little joy and dependence.

Long Peiye chuckled softly a couple of times before finally getting up and leaving.

Watching the man’s tall figure disappear, Xu Xiangsi finally let out a long sigh of relief. She moved a chair under the eaves and sat down, pulling out a book to read with feigned concentration—though she didn’t absorb a single word, her mind wandering throughout, occasionally stealing glances toward the empty gateway while lost in thought.

Ah, Cloud Sky Island is just too boring!

Apart from enjoying the breeze and basking in the sun, all she did was count ants crawling on the wall. If it weren’t for the officer comrade keeping her company, she probably would have gone mad from boredom…

Yet when she recalled how the man hadn’t asked any questions or said much that morning—only repeating reminders to take care of herself, eat more, and not wander off—a certain part of her heart inexplicably softened. An indescribable sense of comfort and security slowly spread through her chest.
