Chapter 72: You Should… Carry Me Back Instead

“Hmm?”

She swallowed the porridge in her mouth, but the next spoonful never came.

Xu Xiangsi lifted her eyelids discontentedly, staring at the man who was lost in thought before her.

Without any reservation, she extended her small hand and gave his firm, taut abdominal muscles a light pat.

Smack.

The sound wasn’t loud, but it was enough to snap Long Peiye back to attention.

She didn’t say a word, merely raising her chin and pointing to her mouth.

The meaning couldn’t be clearer—

Pay attention while feeding me!

Long Peiye instantly snapped out of it. Meeting her unapologetic gaze, he couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle.

He quickly scooped up another spoonful of porridge, carefully blew on it to cool it down, and steadily fed it into her mouth.

He had come to realize one thing:

When it came to things she liked, Xu Xiangsi never bothered to hide her feelings.

For instance, Sister Yan’s Seafood Porridge.

And also… his abdominal muscles.

The steaming bowl of Seafood Porridge was soon finished. Xu Xiangsi let out a satisfied burp.

“Stay here and rest properly. Don’t move around,” Long Peiye said.

After tidying up the thermal container and utensils, he tucked the blanket snugly around her. Only then did he pick up the prescription from the doctor and turn to leave to fetch the medicine.

Just then—

The door to the examination room was pushed open from the outside.

Two young men in their early twenties walked in, arms slung over each other’s shoulders, laughing and joking about something. They exuded an air of carefree nonchalance.

“…I’m telling you, I’m gonna ask that old army doctor for some strong meds later. I still need to settle scores with those bastards this afternoon… I’m gonna make sure they suffer!”

“You? Give it a rest. Don’t end up being the one who gets beaten…”

However, their chatter came to an abrupt halt the next second.

The two men’s eyes, as if drawn by a magnet, fixed directly on Xu Xiangsi, who was leaning back in her chair, having just eaten her fill, lazily resting with her eyes half-closed.

The patient gown was a bit too loose and hung slackly on her, making her appear even more petite.

Perhaps because her fever had just broken, her face still carried a sickly flush, while her lips, moistened by the hot porridge, looked full and glossy. That languid, fragile look instantly struck a chord in the hearts of the two young men.

The air seemed to freeze.

The two, who had been casually draped over each other just moments before, now looked as if someone had hit the pause button.

They almost simultaneously released their arms from each other’s shoulders and abruptly straightened up!

One of them even instinctively and swiftly straightened his crumpled collar.

That gesture of adjusting his collar seemed to serve as a signal.

The slightly bolder of the two cleared his throat and took a small step forward.

He forced what he thought was a charming smile and tentatively asked, “Comrade, are you here alone for your check-up?”

Xu Xiangsi didn’t even bother to lift her eyelids, treating them like two flies buzzing around her ears.

Seeing her lack of response, the other young man quickly stepped up, trying to show his concern. “Yeah, you look really pale. You must be quite sick, huh? Poor thing!”

He looked Xu Xiangsi up and down, his tone carrying a hint of presumptuous speculation. “Comrade, you definitely don’t look like you’re from the island. Are you here visiting family?”

The two men played off each other, tossing questions one after another.

Xu Xiangsi was ill and had little energy to begin with, let alone the mood to deal with such clumsy attempts at flirtation.

She simply closed her eyes, completely shutting out their overly eager gazes.

Seeing that the beauty wasn’t responding, the two young men didn’t feel discouraged. Instead, they took it as a sign of shyness and grew even more enthusiastic.

Exchanging a glance as if they’d reached some sort of agreement, they moved closer and began introducing themselves.

“Comrade, we mean no harm. We just saw you alone and thought you might need some help.”

“That’s right, that’s right! I’m Liu Weijun, a worker at the island’s cotton mill.”

“I’m Zhang Xiaoqiang, also from the cotton mill. I’m even the production team leader in our workshop!”

“Neither of us is married yet, and we haven’t found partners either!”

Their words might as well have had “I’m interested in you” written all over their faces.

Xu Xiangsi sneered inwardly.

Just as expected—flies.

Two flies desperately looking for a nest.

She remained silent, not even twitching an eyebrow, as calm as if she were in deep meditation.

Her unyielding attitude, however, only flustered the two young men who thought rather highly of themselves.

Seeing that the beauty remained unmoved, they actually started bickering with each other.

Liu Weijun shoved Zhang Xiaoqiang. “What are you showing off about being a team leader for? My dad is the director of the logistics department!”

Zhang Xiaoqiang immediately retorted indignantly, “Your dad is your dad! What about you? Your production numbers last month weren’t even as high as mine! Comrade, don’t listen to him. He’s just living off his parents!”

“Who the hell are you calling a freeloader?”

“You! What about it?”

The clinic instantly turned into a chaotic market, filled with the two men’s competitive bickering and attempts to one-up each other.

Just then, steady footsteps approached from a distance.

Long Peiye, holding the medicine he had just retrieved, pushed the door open and saw two strangers crowding around his wife, arguing heatedly with flushed faces and flying spittle.

His little wife, meanwhile, was frowning with clear impatience.

Long Peiye’s face instantly darkened.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop by several degrees.

Without so much as a glance at the two quarreling men, he strode directly to Xu Xiangsi’s side.

Deliberately raising his voice, he spoke with unconcealed intimacy and possessiveness, “Darling, are you feeling any better now?”

“If you’re a little better, let’s head back first.”

“If you’re still not feeling well, we can rest here a bit longer.”

That loud and natural “darling” struck Liu Weijun and Zhang Xiaoqiang like a thunderclap overhead.

Their argument ceased abruptly, as if they were roosters whose necks had been suddenly wrung—mouths agape but unable to utter a single word.

Their expressions shifted from shock to bewilderment, finally settling into thick embarrassment and chagrin.

Liu Weijun, recovering his senses and feeling humiliated, actually turned to Xu Xiangsi and demanded, “You…you’re married? Why didn’t you say so?”

He asked as if he were entirely in the right, as though he had suffered some grave injustice.

Xu Xiangsi finally deigned to open her eyes.

She didn’t even look directly at him, merely lifting her chin lazily, her tone dripping with undisguised sarcasm.

“From the moment you two came in until now, have I acknowledged a single word you said?”

“Why should I tell you about my own affairs?”

Her icy voice struck Liu Weijun and Zhang Xiaoqiang like a series of sharp slaps across their faces.

After speaking, she couldn’t even be bothered to glance at the two petrified men again.

She turned toward Long Peiye, her previously frosty expression instantly softening with a hint of grievance and dependence.

Extending her pale, slender arms toward him, she spoke softly, “I was already feeling a bit unwell and wanted to rest a while longer.”

“But these two annoyances keep buzzing around, making my headache even worse.”

“I don’t want to stay here anymore. Could you… carry me back?”
