Chapter 71: She’s Just… Genuine

Long Peiye silently added a comment in his heart as he listened to her solemn declaration.

What you’re facing isn’t a cold needle.

What you’re facing is my abs.

Seeing that she was ready, Dr. Wang seized the moment with quick reflexes – raising the needle and inserting it swiftly.

The injection was done!

Long Peiye clearly felt the small body in his arms suddenly stiffen, instantly tensing up like a fully drawn bow.

Fortunately, everything happened in the blink of an eye.

Dr. Wang deftly withdrew the needle and quickly pressed a cotton swab against the injection site.

Only then did Xu Xiangsi’s rigid body seem to have all its strength drained away, completely relaxing as she collapsed in his arms like soft mud, breathing heavily in large gasps.

After recovering from the shock for a few seconds, she still couldn’t help but turn her head to look behind her, anxiously asking: “The… the needle didn’t break inside, did it?”

Long Peiye looked at her post-ordeal appearance, barely containing the laughter that threatened to burst from his throat, almost giving himself internal injuries from holding it in.

He cleared his throat, struggling to maintain a serious expression: “No, it’s perfectly intact.”

He paused, then added solemnly in a tone one would use to praise a three-year-old.

“You did very well, very brave, worthy of encouragement.”

Hearing this, Xu Xiangsi finally seemed to have taken a reassurance pill, satisfied as she withdrew her gaze and nodded heavily.

Hmm, that’s more like it.

Just as they were speaking, hurried footsteps suddenly came from the clinic entrance.

Sister Yan rushed in breathlessly, carrying a large thermal container.

“Oh my dear Xiangsi, how are you? What did the doctor say? Do you need to stay in the hospital for observation?”

As she placed the thermal container on a chair, she came over with a worried expression to check on Xu Xiangsi.

Xu Xiangsi, having just been injected and not yet recovered from her post-ordeal state, felt somewhat embarrassed seeing a familiar face.

She honestly shook her head and said quietly: “No need for hospitalization, it’s just a fever shot. I’m much better now, it’s just… my butt still hurts a bit.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, she couldn’t help but pout, pitifully rubbing the spot behind her – her expression couldn’t have been more aggrieved.

Sister Yan’s heart melted into a puddle at the sight, wishing she could immediately hug her and comfort her properly.

“Poor dear! Such a usually lively and cheerful young girl, reduced to this state by that brat of mine!”

The more she spoke, the angrier she became, patting the back of Xu Xiangsi’s hand while glaring fiercely at Long Peiye. “Look at you, see what condition you’ve let your wife get into!”

Long Peiye, inexplicably taking the blame, instinctively touched the tip of his nose as a huge question mark slowly rose above his head.

He knew better than anyone what reputation his little wife had in the military family quarters.

Lively and cheerful?

That description didn’t match Xu Xiangsi in the slightest, did it?

If the Military Wives who had been reduced to tears by her retorts heard this, they’d probably burst out laughing on the spot.

But looking at Sister Yan’s expression, she seemed genuinely heartbroken, as if his wife were the most innocent, most delicate little white rabbit in the world.

Long Peiye felt that since getting married, he had discovered that the filters in this world were hundreds, even thousands of times thicker than the camouflage uniforms in the military.

“Sis, I’m really fine,” Xu Xiangsi quickly explained. “Actually, it’s not his fault—I just have a weak constitution…”

“Enough!” Sister Yan cut her off decisively. “You’re just too considerate. Clearly frail, yet always pushing yourself.”

With that, she opened the thermal container, pulled out a ceramic bowl and spoon, then removed the lid—releasing a wave of savory aroma.

Steaming seafood porridge with soft, glutinous rice grains and several peeled shrimp floating in it looked exceptionally inviting.

“When I heard you fell ill this morning, I figured you wouldn’t get a proper lunch, so I specially made a pot of seafood porridge. Have some while it’s hot to settle your stomach!”

Her tone was both matter-of-fact and carried the unique authority of an elder, leaving no room for refusal.

Moreover—

Xu Xiangsi recalled only taking one bite of steamed bread this morning, and her stomach was indeed growling with hunger. Seeing no need for pretenses, she gratefully nodded:

“Thank you, Sis.”

Before the words fully left her mouth, she reached for the heavy thermal container, but another large hand swiftly snatched it away first.

Long Peiye deftly took hold of the container, raising an eyebrow at her. “Do you even have the strength right now? Let me handle this.”

Happy to be served, Xu Xiangsi leaned back against her chair. “Then this… ahem, Battalion Commander Long, I’ll leave this trivial task to you!”

Long Peiye chuckled softly. “My pleasure.”

Sister Yan watched their interaction with amusement, covering her mouth to stifle a giggle. “You two are so sweet together, no need for others to worry.”

Long Peiye opened the container lid, releasing a burst of steam.

He scooped a large spoonful of seafood porridge, carefully blew on it twice, then tested the temperature with his lips before bringing it to Xu Xiangsi’s mouth.

“Open up.”

Without hesitation, Xu Xiangsi leaned forward and took a clean, decisive bite.

As an invalid, being fed felt entirely justified.

Sister Yan watched gleefully, her eyes crinkling with affection. “Well, Xiangsi, how does it taste?”

With her mouth still full of rice, Xu Xiangsi could only free a hand to give a thumbs-up before accepting another spoonful, seemingly unable to stop.

“Delicious!” she mumbled around the food, already eyeing the next bite before swallowing.

Sister Yan beamed at her enthusiasm. “Drink more if you like it! I’ll make another pot tonight—even more fragrant than this one!”

Xu Xiangsi immediately looked up earnestly. “You can’t go back on your word, Sis! Promise?”

“Don’t worry!” Sister Yan patted her chest. “I absolutely won’t. This time I’ll add more shrimp and simmer it longer—you can have your fill!”

Turning to Long Peiye, she instructed, “Battalion Commander Long, take good care of your wife. She’s delicate—don’t let her suffer again.”

Long Peiye opened his mouth to explain but found no opening, so he simply nodded in acknowledgment.

Satisfied, Sister Yan didn’t linger, bustling out while calling over her shoulder, “No need to get dinner from the cafeteria tonight—I’ll bring it over when it’s ready!”

As soon as the door closed, the consultation room fell into silence, leaving only the aroma of Seafood Porridge and the occasional clinking of a small spoon against the porcelain bowl.

Xu Xiangsi buried her head in eating, each bite seeming to savor the peak of life’s pleasures. Her eyes curved into crescents, appearing infinitely happier than when she’d received the injection earlier.

Sitting beside her, Long Peiye suddenly realized that his little wife’s social skills were actually astonishingly strong!

Her usual aloofness and indifference toward others were merely due to laziness. If she truly wanted to win someone over, it came effortlessly and unfailingly successful!

Not only could she charm him, but now she’d even won over Sister-in-Law Yan’s heart…

But perhaps…

She wasn’t deliberately trying to please anyone at all.

Nor did she say flattering words just to build relationships.

She was simply… genuine.

Genuinely finding Sister-in-Law Yan’s porridge delicious, she praised it without reservation.

Genuinely feeling unwell, she naturally acted spoiled without hesitation.

This personality that disdained beating around the bush and rejected hypocritical social conventions, simply expressing her thoughts purely… truly made Long Peiye’s heart flutter.

Thinking this, Long Peiye’s movements unconsciously slowed.

His spoon hovered mid-air, steam rising from the porridge, while his thoughts had already drifted far away.
