Chapter 6: Only One Bed?

But that wasn’t the end of it. Xu Xiangsi was no saint who would return good for evil.

Did they really think she’d let Xu Rongchang and his family off so easily? Not a chance!

On the day she was scheduled to depart with Long Peiye, Xu Xiangsi left home early in the morning.

Instead of heading straight to the pier, she first wandered over to the Educated Youth Office.

She pulled out the Xu family’s household register and placed it before the clerk, her voice crisp and clear: Comrade, hello. I’m here to register my younger sister Xu Jingjing for the rural assignment program.

The clerk’s eyes lit up upon seeing someone voluntarily registering, especially on behalf of a sister. These days, young people willingly going to hardship posts were as rare as phoenix feathers!

Ah, your sister has such high consciousness! The clerk beamed with approval, swiftly beginning the paperwork.

While processing the documents, the clerk kept praising: Your sister is truly exemplary! A role model for our youth to learn from!

Xu Xiangsi was inwardly overjoyed but maintained a solemn expression, readily playing along.

Indeed, my sister Xu Jingjing has always had a passionate heart since childhood. She’s constantly dreamed of going where the land is vast to achieve great things and contribute to our motherland’s construction!

Without batting an eye, she began fabricating: Just the other day, she specifically went with our father to survey the rural conditions in advance, all to adapt more quickly.

Before leaving, she specially instructed me to help register her name. She said she couldn’t wait to shine and burn with fervor in the countryside!

I believe in her—she’ll strive hard in the rural areas and become an outstanding laborer!

The clerk nodded repeatedly, utterly impressed by Xu Jingjing’s lofty ideals.

The rural assignment subsidy was soon handed to Xu Xiangsi—crisp new banknotes and various ration coupons.

Clutching Xu Jingjing’s indenture money, Xu Xiangsi left the Educated Youth Office thoroughly satisfied.

She could already picture Xu Jingjing’s spectacularly horrified expression upon learning she’d been volunteered for rural assignment.

Hmph! Want to go enjoy luxury in Hong Kong? Maybe in your next life!

By the time she meandered to the pier, Long Peiye was already waiting there.

He wore neatly pressed clothes, his posture erect, standing out conspicuously among the crowd.

Seeing Xu Xiangsi arrive late, Long Peiye raised an eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his lips: I thought you’d changed your mind at the last minute and weren’t coming.

Xu Xiangsi rolled her eyes at him, tilting her chin up: What nonsense? We’ve already gotten the marriage certificate, and my household registration is under your name. If I didn’t come, would I leave you a bachelor?

Long Peiye chuckled at her self-righteous demeanor.

His gaze fell on the small leather suitcase at her feet, somewhat surprised: Your luggage… is that all?

Xu Xiangsi patted the suitcase, looking mysterious: Concentration is the essence. Don’t judge by its size—it holds plenty inside, more than enough.

Long Peiye didn’t press further.

After all, their marriage had been rushed, and they weren’t exactly familiar with each other yet.

He nodded: Let’s go. The boat is about to depart.

Once aboard, the vessel buzzed with voices, the air tinged with a faint scent of diesel.

Long Peiye expertly led her through the crowd, heading straight to the second-class cabin level and arriving at room number 3086.

He pushed the door open and gestured for Xu Xiangsi to enter.

Xu Xiangsi looked around the small compartment in surprise. Though compact, compared to the third and fourth-class cabins packed like sardine cans outside, this place was practically heaven.

Your family circumstances… seem quite comfortable? she couldn’t help asking, her tone carrying a hint of curiosity.

Long Peiye leaned against the doorframe, watching her with a meaningful gaze. You know practically nothing about me, yet you hastily registered our marriage. Weren’t you afraid I might be a scammer who’d sell you off and have you counting the money for me?

Xu Xiangsi pursed her lips dismissively. Why should I be afraid?

The matchmaker sang your praises to high heaven, saying you’re honest, dependable, hardworking, with both parents working in factories as dual-income earners. You yourself are a team leader at the machinery factory with bright prospects.

She paused before continuing her analysis: So I figured your family situation probably wasn’t too shabby.

But still… Xu Xiangsi rubbed her chin, I originally thought nobody in this world could resist the temptation of money.

Long Peiye immediately understood she was still misunderstanding and shook his head with a light chuckle. Alright, you’re not wrong. My family circumstances are indeed quite comfortable.

Hearing him admit it outright made Xu Xiangsi’s heart skip a beat, her brows unconsciously furrowing.

This was troublesome! Didn’t the matchmaker say he needed money? How come he doesn’t need it now?

Her original plan had been: with her Dimension, she lacked neither money nor supplies, so she could cover all household expenses after marriage.

In exchange, Long Peiye would handle chores like laundry, cooking, and cleaning.

But now it seemed if Long Peiye wasn’t short on money, her pay-for-convenience plan might be in jeopardy!

What should she do? She really didn’t want to deal with tedious household chores!

Noticing her brows knitted tightly enough to trap flies, Long Peiye raised an eyebrow. What are you thinking about now? Your face is all scrunched up.

Xu Xiangsi saw no reason to beat around the bush. Long Peiye, I’ll be honest with you – I never lift a finger for housework at home.

Laundry, cooking, sweeping floors, wiping tables – I can’t do any of it, and I don’t want to either.

She sighed, her expression growing more troubled. Originally, hearing you needed money, I planned to cover household expenses while you handled the chores.

But now that you don’t seem to need money, my ‘paying my way’ plan is probably going down the drain!

After hearing her heartfelt confession, Long Peiye was momentarily stunned before a barely perceptible smile flickered in his eyes.

He spoke amusedly, It’s fine, I’ll do them. I’m used to these chores anyway.

Xu Xiangsi’s eyes instantly lit up. Really?

Long Peiye chuckled at her reaction and nodded. Yes, I’ll do them.

Xu Xiangsi’s anxious heart settled back into place with a thud, her entire body relaxing noticeably.

She generously patted Long Peiye’s shoulder, her tone cheerful.

Buddy! Then it’s settled!

From now on, I’ll take care of all the household necessities – firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea! You can just focus on washing clothes, cooking, and cleaning at home!

As for your salary, you can save it all for yourself as your private stash!

Long Peiye looked at her face full of money-is-no-object boldness and found this girl utterly adorable.

He nodded, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth: Alright then, I’ll rely on you to support me from now on.

Satisfied, Xu Xiangsi prepared to properly inspect the cabin, but soon discovered a major problem.

There was actually only one bed here!

Although it was more than spacious enough for two people to sleep…

She and Long Peiye were only in a marriage of convenience after all.

Since Long Peiye was a military man, he definitely wouldn’t try anything inappropriate.

But she was worried about herself! After all, only she knew how her sleeping posture was at night…
