Chapter 59: Truly Cherishing the New Bride to the Bone

“Bang!”

Bai Rumeng pushed the door open and stood panting in the doorway.

Long Peiye was sitting behind his desk reviewing documents when the noise made him frown severely.

He lifted his gaze and, seeing it was Bai Rumeng, his eyes instantly turned cold as ice.

“Who gave you permission to enter?”

The man’s voice held not a trace of warmth.

But Bai Rumeng acted as if she hadn’t heard, rushing to his desk in a few steps and slapping the paper in her hand onto the surface.

“Pei… Battalion Commander Long! You’ve been deceived! That woman Xu Xiangsi has tricked you!”

Long Peiye didn’t even lift his eyelids, his gaze still fixed on the documents.

“Get out.”

“Just look at this first!”

Bai Rumeng pointed urgently at the paper. “I’ve investigated! Xu Xiangsi isn’t from a respectable family at all! Her grandfather was a capitalist! She’s the daughter of a capitalist family!”

She thought this bombshell would surely shock and anger Long Peiye.

But his reaction completely defied her expectations.

The man finally set down his pen.

He slowly raised his head, his dark eyes calmly watching her as if observing a clown.

Then, his thin lips parted to utter three words: “I know.”

Bai Rumeng froze completely.

“You… you knew?” Her voice trembled. “You knew and still married her?! Battalion Commander Long, have you lost your mind? Her background is problematic! This will affect your future!”

Long Peiye let out a cold laugh, full of mockery and impatience: “Comrade Bai Rumeng.”

He deliberately emphasized the word “comrade,” creating an overwhelming sense of distance.

“I know more about my wife than you do.”

“Her family background is none of your business to judge, much less for you to make a mountain out of a molehill and come shouting at me here.”

Bai Rumeng’s face instantly flushed crimson, tears welling up in her eyes.

“I… I’m doing this for your own good! Battalion Commander Long! You can’t be bewitched by her pretty face! Divorce her! A woman like her isn’t worthy of you!”

“Not worthy?” Long Peiye stood up, his tall figure radiating intimidating pressure.

“Whether my wife is worthy of me is for me to decide.”

“What are you? Just an outsider.”

“I’m warning you, Bai Rumeng.”

His voice lowered, carrying an authoritative tone that brooked no argument.

“This is the first time, and the last time.”

“If I catch you harassing her again, or pulling these petty tricks behind my back, don’t blame me for not considering our past acquaintance.”

Bai Rumeng shivered from the coldness in his eyes, her lips trembling too much to form any words.

She didn’t understand.

She was clearly doing this for his own good, trying to pull him out of the fire.

Why wouldn’t he appreciate it? Why was he treating her like this?

Tears finally slipped uncontrollably down her cheeks.

Seeing her tearful appearance, Long Peiye felt not an ounce of pity, only endless annoyance.

Looking at his cold, hard profile, Bai Rumeng felt both heartbroken and resentful.

He must have been bewitched by that fox spirit!

Yes! That must be it!

She thought with heartbreaking despair.

Long Peiye was a hero, he was just temporarily blinded by beauty.

She couldn’t give up.

She absolutely couldn’t stand by and watch him be destroyed by a capitalist’s daughter!

A thought took root and sprouted wildly in Bai Rumeng’s heart.

She would save him.

No matter what it took, she was determined to rescue Brother Peiye from the clutches of that woman, Xu Xiangsi!

The door to Long Peiye’s office closed, shutting out the outside world.

The air still seemed to carry the lingering scent of Bai Rumeng’s cheap snowflake cream interwoven with her aggrieved aura.

Long Peiye’s brow furrowed deeply, the irritation in his heart pressing down like the heavy clouds of a summer afternoon on an island.

He picked up the documents on his desk but couldn’t focus on a single word.

He had long known that some things couldn’t escape the investigation of those who were determined.

He just hadn’t expected her to be the first to jump out.

Even less had he expected her to disregard all propriety and make a scene right in his office.

Long Peiye raised a hand to massage his throbbing temples, a cold sharpness flashing in his eyes.

He had warned her once; there wouldn’t be a second time.

The wall clock ticked steadily.

He glanced at the time, and the frustration in his heart was suddenly diluted by another emotion.

At this hour, Xiangsi must be getting impatient.

At the thought of that delicate yet radiant woman, the hard line of Long Peiye’s mouth unconsciously softened.

He stood up, grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair, and strode out of the office.

He needed to hurry back.

…

The military canteen was rich with the aroma of food.

Uncle Liu, the head cook wielding his large ladle, grinned when he saw Long Peiye heading straight for the serving window with an aluminum lunchbox.

“Well now, Battalion Commander Long, here to get a meal for your wife again?”

The canteen was still sparsely populated, and Uncle Liu’s booming voice drew suppressed chuckles from a few soldiers nearby.

Long Peiye’s expression remained unchanged as he handed over the lunchbox.

“Two portions, extra rice.”

Uncle Liu deftly scooped food into the container while teasing, “I’ll say, you really dote on that new wife of yours to the bone! Eating without lifting a finger every day—she’s almost like a landlord’s wife from the old society!”

Hearing this, Long Peiye rarely curved his lips, a hint of unconscious pride in his eyes.

“Before she married me, her hands never touched cold water.”

“No reason her life should be worse after marrying me.”

Uncle Liu paused his ladle, then burst into laughter, adding an extra large scoop of braised pork in brown sauce to the lunchbox.

“Alright! You’ve got backbone, kid! For that, Uncle Liu is filling you up with meat today!”

Long Peiye carried the heavy lunchbox back to the family quarters.

Pushing the door open, he found the house quiet.

He called out, “Xiangsi, I’m back.”

No response.

Long Peiye’s heart skipped a beat, his eyes instinctively scanning the room.

No one.

Just as a faint tension gripped him, an off-key, cheerful hum drifted from the direction of the master bedroom.

The sound was soft and sweet, as if she had a piece of candy in her mouth.

Long Peiye’s tightened heart instantly relaxed.

He set the lunchbox steadily on the dining table, a smile playing on his lips as he moved quietly toward the master bedroom.

“The food’s here, come out…”

His words cut off abruptly as he pushed open the half-ajar door.

He stood frozen in place, as if struck by lightning.

Inside, Xu Xiangsi was standing before the standard-issue full-length mirror.

On her head was the wide-brimmed straw hat he had woven for her that very afternoon. Beneath the brim was her delicate, luminous face, clean of makeup yet strikingly beautiful.

And on her body…

She was wearing… what was that?!

A piece of blue cloth with white floral patterns clung tightly to her exquisite figure.

The fabric was pitifully scant, revealing vast stretches of snow-white, delicate skin.

Slender straps hung over her rounded shoulders, while her back remained entirely bare except for two thin tied strings.

Further down lay her flat abdomen and a pair of straight, long legs that would have been considered shockingly bold for that era.

She stood on tiptoe, slightly twisting her body as she examined herself in the mirror, seemingly checking where the fit might be imperfect.

Sunlight streamed obliquely through the window, casting a golden halo over her radiantly pale skin.

The scene was a hundred times more impactful than the most fashionable movie star on any poster!

Long Peiye felt a surge of heat rush straight to his head.

His throat became so dry it felt like it might smoke.

How… how was this any different from wearing nothing?!

He could even clearly see the slight rise and fall of her chest and that slender waist that seemed as if it would snap with just one pinch.
