Chapter 27: Don’t Be Afraid, Watch Me

The soldiers who were unaware of the situation whispered among themselves, their eyes filled with confusion.

Hey, who is that? Why is there a female comrade beside Battalion Commander Long?

I’ve never heard that the battalion commander has a sister.

She doesn’t look like a local—her skin is so fair and delicate… If she really is Battalion Commander Long’s sister, I’d definitely call him ‘brother-in-law.’

Are you trying to get yourself killed? What if she’s Battalion Commander Long’s wife?

No way? Battalion Commander Long has been single for so long. How could he suddenly have a wife?

Meanwhile, the soldiers under Long Peiye who were in the know couldn’t take their eyes off Xu Xiangsi.

They lowered their voices, whispering excitedly.

Did you see her? That’s our sister-in-law!

No wonder the battalion commander suddenly submitted a marriage report. So our sister-in-law is this young and beautiful!

Tsk tsk, look at her skin—so tender it looks like you could squeeze water out of it. She must be a young lady from the city!

No wonder the battalion commander kept her hidden. He’s been keeping a beauty tucked away!

They nudged each other, egging one another on: Go say hello to our sister-in-law!

Why don’t you go?

I… I’m afraid the battalion commander will chew me out!

Long Peiye’s face was usually fine when he smiled, but when he turned stern, the entire battalion would tremble in fear.

Who would dare to test his temper at such a highly visible moment?

Long Peiye paid no attention to the surrounding chatter and led Xu Xiangsi straight to the food-serving window.

When the chef, Uncle Liu, looked up and saw Long Peiye, followed by Xu Xiangsi, his eyes instantly lit up.

Well! Battalion Commander Long! Uncle Liu’s voice boomed with laughter.

His gaze swept over Xu Xiangsi’s face, and he suddenly understood. Ah! The political commissar mentioned to me a few days ago that you’d submitted a marriage report. I thought he was joking! So this is your wife, right?

Long Peiye grinned, stepping aside to reveal Xu Xiangsi behind him. His tone carried a hint of pride: Uncle Liu, let me introduce you. This is my wife, Xu Xiangsi.

He paused, then lifted his chin as if showing off a treasure. Well? Isn’t she beautiful?

Uncle Liu looked Xu Xiangsi up and down, slapped his thigh, and praised her profusely: Beautiful! Absolutely stunning!

No wonder you suddenly came to your senses, you rascal. So you’ve found yourself a fairy-like beauty!

With looks and a figure like that, it’s no wonder you rushed to marry her!

Xu Xiangsi had been maintaining a polite smile, but under Uncle Liu’s unrestrained praise, her cheeks flushed bright red.

Feeling a little embarrassed, she secretly reached out and pinched the soft flesh at Long Peiye’s waist.

The pinch wasn’t hard, carrying a hint of playful reproach.

Long Peiye hissed as if it hurt, but his eyes sparkled with laughter.

He quickly caught her mischievous hand, gave it a gentle squeeze, and rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand before letting go as if nothing had happened.

Turning back to Uncle Liu, he winked and said in a tone that was both helpless and boastful: Uncle Liu, you’d better tone down the compliments. If you keep going, my waist is going to be bruised.

Uncle Liu burst into laughter at this, pointing at them. Look at you! Look at you! You young folks are so easily embarrassed!

Still laughing, he picked up his ladle and began serving food for Long Peiye.

The braised pork with potatoes, stir-fried seasonal vegetables, and scrambled eggs with tomatoes were all piled high in the serving trays, each portion generously heaped without a single tremble of the serving spoon, as if worried they might give too little.

Sister-in-law, you’re too thin! You need to eat more and build up your strength! Chef Liu said enthusiastically.

Conditions on our island are a bit tough, but the food is definitely plentiful! We’ll fatten you up fair and plump—it’ll give you more strength for having babies later and save you some suffering!

The smile on Xu Xiangsi’s face froze the moment she heard the words having babies.

Her hands holding the enamel bowl stiffened slightly.

She and Long Peiye were in a fake marriage—what kind of baby were they supposed to have?

Long Peiye immediately noticed her discomfort.

He calmly took the bowl from Xu Xiangsi’s hands and said to Chef Liu with a smile, Uncle Liu, you’re getting ahead of yourself.

Xiangsi and I have just gotten married—we’re not planning on having children so soon.

Young people should focus on their careers first. An extra person would just be an extra burden.

He paused, glanced at Xu Xiangsi, and added with a more serious tone, Besides, Xiangsi is still young. Having a child so early wouldn’t be good for her health.

Upon hearing this, Chef Liu winked at Long Peiye with an I get it expression.

Alright, alright! You young folks have your own ideas—Uncle Liu won’t say another word!

Long Peiye looked at his knowing expression and felt both amused and exasperated.

He led Xu Xiangsi to get their food.

Come on, let’s find a place to sit.

The two had just settled at a corner table when an impatient soldier scurried up to Chef Liu.

Uncle Liu! Uncle Liu! a young soldier whispered, though his eyes kept darting toward Long Peiye’s table. Who’s that female comrade with the battalion commander?

Chef Liu’s booming voice couldn’t be contained. He grinned with a hint of pride, Who else could it be? Our Battalion Commander Long’s newlywed wife!

Wife?! The soldier’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he gasped in shock. R-really? When did Battalion Commander Long get married? So suddenly? Uncle Liu, you’re not pulling our leg, are you?!

Would I lie?! Chef Liu thumped his chest. I just asked the battalion commander myself—he admitted it personally!

With this confirmation, the soldier forgot all about getting his food and dashed back to his table like a gust of wind.

Hey, hey! Big news! Earth-shattering news!

His tablemates immediately crowded around him: What news? Spill it!

That female comrade with Battalion Commander Long—she’s his new wife!

Holy crap!

Seriously?!

The news was like a stone tossed into a calm lake, instantly stirring up waves.

It spread from ten to a hundred people.

The entire cafeteria grew restless.

But no one dared to make loud noises, especially since Battalion Commander Long was still sitting there.

Instead, hushed whispers, like the buzzing of mosquitoes, began to permeate every corner of the cafeteria.

Curious, probing, and envious glances drifted toward Xu Xiangsi from time to time.

Xu Xiangsi had just picked up her chopsticks when she felt like a rare specimen in a zoo.

No, worse than that.

She felt like a little white rabbit being stared down by a pack of hungry wolves, every hair on her body standing on end.

Those stares made her feel as if she were sitting on pins and needles, her back prickling with discomfort.

She even felt like, at any moment, someone might rush over, pin her to the ground, and snap handcuffs on her!

Long Peiye, she whispered, her voice tight, They… they’re all staring at me. I feel goosebumps all over. Next time, I’m not eating in the cafeteria anymore. This is too frightening.

Hearing this, Long Peiye lifted his eyes and scanned the room.

The soldiers in the cafeteria who had been pretending to eat while secretly glancing their way noticeably stiffened their movements.

A barely perceptible smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

It’s fine. His voice wasn’t loud, yet carried a calming authority.

Xu Xiangsi made a pained face: How is this fine? I feel like I’m being skinned alive by their stares.

Long Peiye set down his chopsticks and looked at her leisurely. Don’t be afraid. Watch this.

After speaking, he rose to his feet unhurriedly.

Without uttering a word, his deep eyes slowly swept across the cafeteria.

Wherever his gaze fell, the soldiers who had been whispering among themselves froze as if spellbound, instantly falling silent.

Finally, he lightly emitted a single syllable from his nasal passage: Hmm?

The sound wasn’t loud, even somewhat casual.

But the entire cafeteria seemed to have been muted.

Whoosh!

All the murmuring, all the whispering, all the stolen glances vanished without a trace.

The soldiers who had been restless just moments before now buried their heads in their meals, practically trying to stuff their faces into their enamel bowls.

As if their bowls contained divine ambrosia and exquisite delicacies that demanded complete attention.

Not a single daring glance was cast toward Xu Xiangsi anymore.

Xu Xiangsi stared in stunned disbelief.

This… this was simply miraculous!s
