Chapter 22: She Truly Showed No Unusual Behavior During Those Two Days

That aunt wasn’t one to back down from trouble either, immediately shouting back at him.

Pah! Xu Rongchang, have you no shame left?

Have you forgotten how the Yun family supported you back in the day?

Before Xu Xiangsi’s mother was even cold in her grave, you married that fox spirit and brought along her burden of a child!

Everyone in this compound knows how you’ve treated Xiangsi all these years!

And now you’re turning around and accusing Xiangsi of theft? I think the ones who should be arrested are you black-hearted, rotten-livered scoundrels!

You! You shrew! You’re spouting nonsense! Xu Rongchang trembled with rage, spraying spit all over the aunt’s face.

I’ll tear your mouth apart!

As the two were about to come to blows, neighbors rushed over to separate them.

Hey now, let’s talk this out properly! No fighting!

We’re all neighbors here, what’s all this arguing about?

The staff residential compound instantly descended into chaos.

The aunt who had been pointed at and cursed by Xu Rongchang grew even angrier. Shaking off those trying to mediate, she planted her hands on her hips and sprayed spit even farther than Xu Rongchang had!

Pah! Xu Rongchang! Do you think everyone here is a fool?

Who doesn’t know what state you were in when you first arrived in Shanghai?

A penniless pauper so poor his pockets were cleaner than his face! If you hadn’t used your somewhat decent looks to deceive the young lady of the Yun family, would you have been able to live in this compound? Would you have what you have today?!

Let me tell you, this Xu residence used to belong to the Yun family!

Her words drew sharp intakes of breath from the crowd, followed by unrestrained murmuring.

Oh my, so that’s how it was!

I always wondered how the Xu family became so prosperous…

The Yun family used to be quite wealthy, what a pity…

Several people in the crowd chimed in agreement, their voices full of contempt.

So that means you, Xu Rongchang, were just a live-in son-in-law back then! To put it bluntly, you were just a matrilocal husband!

You ate their food, lived in their house, and now you’re biting the hand that fed you?

What an ungrateful wretch!

Xu Rongchang’s aged face instantly turned the color of liver, his entire body trembling uncontrollably.

You… you all…

He pointed at the aunt, then at the chattering neighbors around them, too furious to form complete sentences.

You… you must all be in cahoots with that little slut Xu Xiangsi!

What did she promise you? Huh?!

That’s why you’re speaking up for her and covering up how she cleaned out my entire house!

This truly stirred up a hornet’s nest.

Even neighbors who had been watching with mild interest now darkened their expressions upon hearing this.

Xu Rongchang, you should speak with a clear conscience!

When did we ever cover up for Xu Xiangsi? We’re telling the truth!

Exactly! What could she possibly give us? Why would we offend you for her sake?

I think you’re the one with a guilty conscience! You know you’re in the wrong, so you’re trying to shift blame onto others!

We’ve been neighbors for so many years – don’t think we don’t know what kind of person you are, Xu Rongchang!

First you were heartless to the Yun family’s young lady, then you treated Xiangsi with nothing but meanness!

Now that things are missing from your house, you blame the child and try to drag us into it? Not a chance!

For a moment, the crowd grew agitated, with everyone speaking over each other, collectively condemning Xu Rongchang’s wrongdoings.

Xu Rongchang was no match for so many people. He was left flushed and flustered, utterly defenseless against their accusations.

He glanced around, looking from one person to another, and noticed contempt and anger on every face.

You’re all insane! Completely insane!

Finally unable to endure it, he cursed incoherently, pushed through the crowd, and fled in disgrace.

His disheveled appearance drew waves of mocking laughter and scornful curses from those left behind.

In the following days, Xu Rongchang, Lin Jiaoyan, and Xu Jingjing remained holed up in the shabby bunk room of the guesthouse.

All three were too anxious to eat or sleep properly, each day feeling like an eternity.

The guesthouse meals were barely edible, and the room was damp and stifling, yet they couldn’t even scrape together enough money to upgrade to a better private room.

News of Xu Xiangsi had vanished without a trace, like a stone sinking into the ocean.

During this time, the family of three did venture out to make inquiries.

Refusing to give up, Xu Rongchang dragged Lin Jiaoyan and Xu Jingjing along, asking almost everyone near the staff residential compound.

They questioned countless people—elderly masters, young workers, housewives, even children playing by the roadside—but the information they gathered was always the same.

In the days after they had left, Xu Xiangsi had behaved no differently than usual.

She would go out for walks each day, occasionally buying small snacks or a few yards of fabric, with no signs of anything unusual.

No one had seen her moving large luggage, let alone furniture. After she left carrying that small leather suitcase, she never returned.

Everyone agreed that when Xu Xiangsi departed, it seemed no different from her usual outings. No one had expected her to leave for good.

The police investigation results came out quickly too.

They aligned almost perfectly with what the neighbors had said.

The police officers had visited the entire staff residential compound and even questioned residents from several surrounding streets.

No one had witnessed any signs of the Xu family moving belongings, and no one had heard any unusual noises at night.

Most importantly, the police had carefully inspected the Xu residence.

The doors and windows were intact, with no signs of forced entry.

This meant it was nearly impossible for an outsider to have committed the act.

If it was Xu Xiangsi herself, how could she have emptied the entire house within two days without anyone noticing?

The police concluded that Comrade Xu Xiangsi had neither the time nor the means to single-handedly carry out such a large-scale relocation.

When Xu Rongchang heard this result, he exploded on the spot.

He nearly shouted at the police officers, Impossible! Absolutely impossible! It must be her! She did it! Have you been bribed by her too?

If not for Lin Jiaoyan holding him back desperately, he might have physically confronted the officers.

A young police officer frowned and patiently explained, Comrade Xu, we base our conclusions on facts. According to our investigation, your daughter Xu Xiangsi showed no unusual behavior during those two days.

Xu Rongchang remained relentless, Then she must have done it at night! While we were away, in the dead of night, she conspired with outsiders to sneak the things out! They must have moved quietly and carefully—that’s why no one noticed!

Another older police officer shook his head upon hearing this, his tone carrying a hint of helplessness.

Comrade Xu, why don’t you go back and take another look yourself?

Your home’s current condition… forget about the furniture, even the old newspapers pasted on the walls have been torn off in some places. The wall plaster is almost scraped off entirely.

Do you really think such extensive movement could be done quietly without alerting anyone?

Moreover, those rosewood furniture pieces, the large wardrobe, and those porcelain items – every single one is both heavy and fragile.

When moving heavy objects like beds and cabinets, the floorboards would vibrate. The neighbors downstairs couldn’t possibly remain completely unaware.

Xu Rongchang was left speechless by the police officer’s words for a long moment.

Of course he knew how thoroughly his home had been emptied – it was practically scraped clean down to the bare floors!

But he just couldn’t believe it!

He refused to accept that his proud home had simply vanished into thin air!

Breathing heavily, he struggled for a long time before finally forcing out words through gritted teeth: Then tell me! Where did all those things from my house go?! Where did they all disappear to?!
