Chapter 20: We Really Have Nowhere to Go Now!
The older public security officer cleared his throat, signaling everyone to quiet down.
“Neighbors, please cooperate with our work.”
“We’ll be speaking with several individuals separately to understand the situation.”
Soon, the three officers each found a seemingly reliable bystander and led them to relatively quiet corners nearby. One officer even took someone into the neighbor’s house next to the Xu residence for questioning.
Xu Rongchang, Lin Jiaoyan, and Xu Jingjing were left waiting anxiously in the empty living room.
Xu Jingjing couldn’t help whispering to Lin Jiaoyan: “Mom, what do you think the officers will find out?”
Lin Jiaoyan’s eyes turned vicious as she lowered her voice: “Hmph, I doubt those neighbors would dare speak carelessly! What could they have possibly seen?”
Xu Rongchang paced back and forth in the room, each step thumping heavily on the floor as if trying to stomp out the fury in his heart.
Before long, the three officers returned one after another, their expressions somewhat peculiar.
The older officer spoke first, his voice carrying a hint of confusion: “We’ve interviewed several neighbors separately.”
“They all stated that the last time they saw Comrade Xu Xiangsi was on the morning two days ago.”
A younger officer added: “At that time, Comrade Xu Xiangsi was carrying a small suitcase and leaving home alone.”
“After that, no one saw her return.”
The third officer nodded in agreement: “We’ve verified this repeatedly.”
“No one witnessed Comrade Xu Xiangsi asking anyone to move her belongings.”
“Moreover, in the two days since she left, neither any person nor vehicle came to move any large items.”
The older officer summarized, his brow furrowing deeper: “In other words, the Xu family’s possessions… seem to have vanished into thin air.”
At these words, not only Xu Rongchang’s family of three, but even the neighbor representatives standing nearby gasped in shock.
This matter reeked of something unnatural!
Hearing this, Xu Rongchang was so furious he felt his lungs would explode. Pointing at his own nose, he roared: “What do you mean vanished into thin air?! It must be that wretched girl’s doing!”
“She went out carrying a suitcase! That suitcase must have contained our family’s gold, silver, and valuables!”
“She had this planned all along – steal our things and run away, that’s why she never returned!”
He was so agitated that spittle flew from his mouth as he spoke.
The older officer tried to calm him: “Comrade Xu, please settle down first.”
“Based on our current understanding of the situation, it would be impossible for Comrade Xu Xiangsi alone, carrying only one small suitcase, to move an entire house full of belongings without alerting anyone.”
“This defies logic.”
Xu Rongchang wouldn’t listen to reason, convinced it was Xu Xiangsi’s scheme.
“I don’t care about logic! It was her! No one else could have done it!”
The officers exchanged glances, also finding the case quite puzzling.
After pondering for a moment, the older officer said: “Alright then, since Comrade Xu Xiangsi went out, she would certainly need to get an introduction letter from the neighborhood committee.”
“Let’s go check at the neighborhood office now to see where she actually went.”
This was indeed a proper investigative direction.
Upon hearing this, Xu Rongchang and the other two immediately felt as if they had grabbed a lifeline.
“Yes, yes! Go to the neighborhood office! Check where she went!” Lin Jiaoyan shrieked.
“Comrade officers, we’ll go with you!” Xu Jingjing chimed in urgently.
Thus, the three members of the Xu Rongchang family followed the three officers, marching in a grand procession toward the neighborhood office.
Along the way, Xu Rongchang continued to curse Xu Xiangsi incessantly, drawing sidelong glances from passersby.
When they arrived at the neighborhood office, the officers identified themselves and explained their purpose.
The clerk in charge of household registration and introduction letters was a middle-aged woman wearing glasses. She adjusted her spectacles and flipped through the record book.
“Comrade Xu Xiangsi, right?”
“Oh, found her.”
The middle-aged woman looked up at the officers and the Xu Rongchang family, speaking deliberately, “Comrade Xu Xiangsi just completed her marriage registration here a few days ago.”
“What?! Marriage?!” Xu Rongchang, Lin Jiaoyan, and Xu Jingjing exclaimed in unison, their eyes nearly popping out of their heads.
They had only been away from home for a few days! How could that wretched girl Xu Xiangsi have gotten married already?!
This was impossible!
The neighborhood clerk was startled by their dramatic reaction but continued, “Yes, she’s married. The groom’s surname is Long. I’m not at liberty to disclose his full name.”
“She obtained an introduction letter that same day to go to Cloud Sky Island with her husband. Her household registration was also transferred from the Xu family to her spouse’s household registry.”
“Boom—!”
This news struck Xu Rongchang and the other two like a bolt from the blue, hitting them hard.
Xu Rongchang felt his vision darken and nearly fainted on the spot.
Staggering backward, he pointed a trembling finger at the neighborhood clerk, shaking with rage, “She… How dare she! That vile creature! That shameless bitch!”
“I was only gone for a few days! She sold herself off! And emptied our entire home!”
“Damned! Shameless wretch!”
Right in front of the officers and neighborhood office staff, he began spewing vulgar insults, every foul word imaginable.
Both the neighborhood clerk and the officers’ expressions turned grim.
The neighborhood clerk couldn’t help but advise, “Comrade Xu, you shouldn’t speak like that.”
“Comrade Xu Xiangsi is still your own daughter. How can you curse her like this?”
A young officer nearby also frowned and said, “Yes, Comrade Xu, watch your language.”
Blinded by rage, Xu Rongchang wouldn’t listen to reason.
He stiffened his neck, his eyes bulging like copper bells, “My own daughter? What kind of daughter would do this?!”
“She stole everything from our home! Didn’t leave even a single needle behind!”
“And I’m not allowed to curse her?!”
Turning to the officers, he demanded arrogantly, “Comrade officers! You must find her and bring her back! Retrieve our family’s belongings!”
“This is theft! A crime! You must arrest her!”
The senior officer frowned and stated sternly, “Comrade Xu, we will investigate according to procedure.”
“Since Comrade Xu Xiangsi has already gone to Cloud Sky Island, we will contact the local authorities there to assist with the investigation.”
“You should go home and wait for updates.”
Go home and wait for updates?
Hearing this made Xu Rongchang even more furious.
He pointed at his own empty hands, nearly wailing: “Go back? Where can we go back to?!”
“Our home has been completely emptied, not even a bedroll left! Are we supposed to live on the streets?!”
Lin Jiaoyan immediately joined in with dramatic sobbing: “Comrade officers, we truly have nowhere to go now!”
Xu Jingjing also squeezed out a few tears, looking pitifully at the public security officers and neighborhood committee staff.
