Chapter 19: This Is Even Emptier Than Our Newly Allocated Rough Apartment!

He stomped his foot furiously, turned around, and stormed out the door with large, angry strides.

“I’m going right now! Let’s see if she can run to the ends of the earth!”

As Xu Rongchang’s figure disappeared beyond the doorway, the empty house was left with only Lin Jiaoyan and her daughter Xu Jingjing.

Wiping her tears, Xu Jingjing asked in a choked voice, “Mom, there’s nothing left in the house now. What… what are we going to do?”

Lin Jiaoyan leaned against the cold wall, her eyes sweeping over the mess with a venomous glare.

“That little beast! She’s nothing but an ungrateful wretch!”

She cursed through gritted teeth.

“After all these years of us serving her like slaves, this is how she repays us!”

“She’s cleared out the house without leaving even a single needle behind! She’s deliberately trying to make us sleep on the streets and starve!”

Xu Jingjing joined in the lament, her voice filled with bitter resentment.

“Just wait until the police catch her! Let’s see how proud she’ll be then! We must make her pay!”

A ferocious, cold smile twisted Lin Jiaoyan’s face.

“Catch her? Hah! Once we find her, I’m going to report her!”

“Report her for being just like her grandfather! A Capitalist roader! A supporter of Capitalism!”

She grew more agitated as she spoke, her eyes turning increasingly wild.

“Let her rot in prison! Let her be sent down to the poorest, most miserable farm for re-education!”

“Then we’ll see how this pampered Miss Xu endures being tormented by those country bumpkins! How she suffers abuse from those reform-through-labor convicts!”

Lin Jiaoyan seemed to already visualize Xu Xiangsi’s miserable suffering on the farm, a satisfied smirk curling her lips.

Xu Jingjing felt vindicated hearing this, but after a moment’s thought, she voiced her concern.

“Mom, if we report her like this, what if… what if it backfires on us?”

“After all, most of the things in our house before… were sent by Xu Xiangsi’s grandfather…”

Lin Jiaoyan’s triumphant expression instantly froze.

Yes, if they really investigated the Xu family’s possessions, they wouldn’t be able to escape implication either.

Her eyes shifted maliciously as she immediately conceived an even more vicious plan.

“You’re right! We can’t let her off easy with just prison!”

“Hmph, when we find that little slut, let’s keep it quiet and secretly find a Trafficker!”

“Marry her off somewhere far away! To some godforsaken backwater where even birds don’t shit!”

Xu Jingjing’s eyes immediately lit up at this, and she clapped her hands repeatedly.

“Yes, yes! That’s a brilliant idea, Mom! Absolutely perfect!”

The more Lin Jiaoyan thought about it, the more she felt this method would both satisfy their hatred and eliminate the problem permanently.

“Let’s find her someone old and ugly, preferably a cripple missing arms or legs!”

“Some penniless old bachelor who could never get a wife in his lifetime!”

“And we’ll find one with a terrible temper who beats his wife to death! Let her get beaten every day and live a life worse than death!”

Mother and daughter went back and forth, imagining countless extremely tragic endings for Xu Xiangsi.

As they spoke, they emitted sharp, malicious laughter, as if this could vent all their pent-up frustration and bring them some comfort.

Before long, hurried footsteps and voices came from outside the door.

Xu Rongchang returned, followed by three comrades in public security uniforms with stern expressions.

Lin Jiaoyan and Xu Jingjing immediately wiped the ferocity from their faces, replacing them with expressions of profound grief and pitiable vulnerability.

“Comrade officers! Comrade officers, you’ve finally arrived! You must deliver justice for us!” Lin Jiaoyan wailed as she rushed forward to meet them.

The three public security comrades froze in astonishment the moment they stepped through the gate of the Xu residence, confronted with the nearly bare interior that could only be described as having “bare walls and empty rooms.”

The eldest comrade among them adjusted his peaked cap and asked with disbelief, “Comrade Xu Rongchang, are you certain… this is your home?”

A younger comrade couldn’t help but glance around and mutter in confusion, “This… this is even emptier than the unfinished apartments we were just assigned!”

Xu Rongchang’s face turned livid with rage as he pointed at the vacant living room, his voice trembling.

“Comrade officers! You have no idea! Our home wasn’t like this before!”

“Our entire family lived here with every room filled with furniture and belongings…”

“Now! Now it’s all gone! Everything was cleared out by that wretched girl, my unfilial daughter Xu Xiangsi!”

The public security comrades exchanged glances, their expressions growing solemn upon hearing this.

They carefully examined the empty house again.

Indeed, faint marks remained on the walls where picture frames had once hung; the floor showed patches of varying shades, clearly left behind by large furniture that had stood there for years.

“So… your home was robbed? And the entire house was emptied out?” The senior comrade furrowed his brow.

This was no small case.

News of the public security officers’ visit spread like wildfire through the entire lane.

Soon, a dense crowd of curious neighbors gathered at the entrance of the Xu residence, craning their necks to see the commotion.

Everyone knew the Xu family had been Capitalists in the past, with substantial wealth living in this impressive standalone building.

But no one had imagined that behind the usually tightly shut doors, the Xu residence had been reduced to such a state!

“Oh my! What happened here? Was the Xu family robbed?”

“Heavens! Why does the inside look like it’s been ransacked by bandits? You can’t even spot a chair leg!”

“I heard it was their eldest daughter, Xu Xiangsi, who packed up everything and ran off!”

“Really? If that’s true, she’s truly a family ruin! How heartless!”

Various comments, exclamations, and even some gleeful snickers faintly drifted through the doors and windows.

The faces of Xu Rongchang, Lin Jiaoyan, and Xu Jingjing grew even more unpleasant, shifting between green and pale.

After exchanging looks, the three officers nodded to each other.

The senior comrade addressed Xu Rongchang, “Comrade Xu, we’ll first gather some information from the neighbors.”

With that, he led the way to the entrance, followed by the other two officers.

Seeing the public security officers emerge, the neighbors at the gate strained their necks even further, all clamoring to offer their accounts.

“Officer, I live right across the street, and I really haven’t seen any large vehicles coming to move things!”

“That’s right, that’s right! The Xu family’s doorstep has been quiet these past two days—we haven’t even seen a single handcart pull up!”
