Chapter 112: A Familiar Voice Rang Out in the Crowd

“I’m going to personally tell them that from now on, I, Xu Xiangsi, will completely sever ties with their erroneous old ideologies and outdated class affiliations.”

“I’m going to urge them to properly receive re-education from the laboring masses upon arrival, to conscientiously reform themselves, to thoroughly discard those Capitalist dregs in their minds, and strive to remake themselves as soon as possible.”

Xu Xiangsi’s voice wasn’t loud, but every word was crystal clear and resonant.

After speaking, she calmly gazed at Bai Rumeng, whose face had turned from red to blue then to pale white, tilting her head slightly with pure and innocent eyes.

“May I ask, is there any problem with what I’m doing?”

Dead silence fell over the crowd.

Xu Xiangsi’s clear and innocent question pierced through Bai Rumeng’s inflated arrogance like an invisible needle.

The expressions on the faces of the military family members watching nearby shifted from gossipy curiosity to thoughtful contemplation.

Indeed, was there any problem with this approach?

It seemed… there wasn’t?

In fact, it sounded quite enlightened?

Wang Zhengwei’s tightly knitted brows unconsciously relaxed slightly at this moment.

His gaze toward Xu Xiangsi shifted from scrutiny to include a trace of imperceptible curiosity and approval.

Long Peiye’s tense body relaxed somewhat as he looked down at the petite yet upright figure before him. The frost in his eyes quietly melted, replaced by ripples of pride.

His little wife was never someone to be pushed around easily.

Ignoring the varied looks from the crowd, Xu Xiangsi calmly continued watching Bai Rumeng, whose face was growing increasingly pale, her voice steady and unhurried.

“The great leader taught us to unite all forces that can be united,” she began, invoking an authority no one could refute. “My grandfather and uncles have made mistakes, taken wrong paths, and developed ideological problems.”

“But they are not irredeemable enemies.”

“What?!” Bai Rumeng shrieked like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, instantly interrupting her. “Xu Xiangsi! Even now you’re still speaking up for your Capitalist grandfather!”

“You’re clearly in cahoots with them!”

She tried to pin the “class enemy” label back on Xu Xiangsi.

However, Xu Xiangsi simply waited calmly for her to finish shouting before tilting her head again, her eyes appearing even more innocent and harmless.

“Comrade Bai Rumeng, don’t get so worked up.”

“Let’s be reasonable.”

“If they were truly irredeemable, completely beyond redemption as enemies, what awaited them wouldn’t be re-education through labor, but the people’s judgment and execution by firing squad.”

At these words, the surrounding military family members gasped and instinctively nodded in agreement.

That made perfect sense!

Xu Xiangsi’s voice continued, like a gentle scalpel meticulously dissecting the flaws in Bai Rumeng’s logic.

“The reason the organization has given them this opportunity for reform through labor is because it believes their humanity hasn’t been completely extinguished, that their ideology can still be salvaged, and that they can still repent and start anew through labor and study.”

“This is the tolerance and opportunity granted to them by the Party and the people.”

“As their relative, I responded to the organization’s call to supervise and encourage them, urging them to seize this opportunity for proper reformation so they may one day become useful members of society again.”

She paused, her clear gaze fixed once more on Bai Rumeng, enunciating each word with perfect clarity: “May I ask, what exactly is wrong with me assisting the organization in consolidating the fruits of reformation?”

“…” Bai Rumeng was completely dumbfounded.

Her mouth hung open like a fish out of water, unable to utter a single word.

She realized that her proud, ever-effective tactic of “political labeling” had become utterly ridiculous and fragile in the face of Xu Xiangsi’s watertight, politically orthodox reasoning.

The surrounding murmurs had evolved from hushed whispers to open discussions.

“My, listen to how eloquently Little Xu speaks!”

“Indeed, both red and expert—her political consciousness is leagues above Bai Rumeng’s!”

“Bai Rumeng has kicked an iron plate this time!”

These words pierced Bai Rumeng’s ears like red-hot needles.

Her face flushed the color of liver, and overwhelming humiliation and resentment made her lose all reason.

“You’re lying!” she shrieked with all her might.

“You’re talking nonsense! You definitely didn’t say that back then! You’re just making excuses!”

Instead of getting angry, Xu Xiangsi responded with a light laugh.

To Bai Rumeng, that laughter was filled with mockery.

“Oh?” Xu Xiangsi raised an eyebrow.

“Comrade Bai Rumeng, since you state this with such certainty, I presume you were present at the scene and personally heard me say something else?”

“I…” Bai Rumeng instantly choked on her words.

“Since you weren’t there, how do you know I’m lying?” Xu Xiangsi pressed forward step by step, though her eyes remained calm.

“In our revolutionary ranks, we emphasize seeking truth from facts. The burden of proof lies with the accuser.”

“You claim I was improperly involved with them and said other things. Then, please present your evidence.”

“Provide witnesses or material proof.”

“If you can produce evidence, I will confess my guilt on the spot and accept any disciplinary action from the organization.”

“Can’t produce any?” The corners of Xu Xiangsi’s lips curved into a faint, cold smile.

“Then this is baseless slander, rumor-mongering, and malicious defamation of a revolutionary comrade!”

“What kind of problem does that constitute?”

“!!!” Bai Rumeng staggered as if struck by lightning.

Evidence?

Where could she possibly find evidence?!

The files in her possession only recorded that Xu Xiangsi had visited her relatives, with no documentation of their conversation!

She was completely speechless, her lips trembling as her face cycled from red to pale to ashen, a spectacular display of colors.

Just then, a familiar voice rang out from the crowd.

“I can testify! Comrade Xu Xiangsi is absolutely a good comrade!” Everyone turned to see Sister Yan pushing through the crowd, her face filled with agitation and indignation.

She stood beside Xu Xiangsi and pointed at Bai Rumeng: “How dare you slander Little Xu like this?”

“Not long ago, my Tiedan fell into the sea! It was Little Xu! She didn’t hesitate for a second before jumping in to save my son’s life!”

“How evil could someone’s heart be when they’d risk their own life to save another person’s child?!”

Before the words faded, another Military Wife holding a child stepped forward—it was Sister Li.

Her eyes were red-rimmed.

“Sister Yan is right! And me too! Back in Yuelin City, if it weren’t for Comrade Xu Xiangsi’s alertness—kicking over that human trafficker—my child… my child would have been snatched away!”

“She’s the great benefactor of our family!”

“Yes, yes! I know about Xiao Li’s incident! We all heard her story when we were on the boat!”

“And Xiao Jun’s case too! Didn’t Comrade Xu Xiangsi fall ill precisely because she was saving someone?”

“Exactly! Comrade Xu Xiangsi is a good comrade—cold on the outside but warm inside!”

For a moment, the crowd buzzed with chatter, and every voice surprisingly spoke in defense of Xu Xiangsi.

The tide of public opinion had completely reversed direction at this moment.

Gazes filled with gratitude, admiration, or guilt all turned toward Xu Xiangsi, whose figure was slender but who remained calm throughout.

On the other side, Bai Rumeng, the “plaintiff,” found herself completely isolated.

She stood there in a daze, watching this surreal scene unfold before her, her mind blank.

How could this happen?

How was this possible?

She had inquired thoroughly before: when Xu Xiangsi first arrived on the island, she was lazy, difficult, and antisocial. All the military families disliked her, and her reputation was terrible!

So why now…

had everyone stepped forward to speak up for her?!
