Chapter 11: You Don’t Remember Me?
Xu Xiangsi opened her mouth to retort but found herself unable to utter a single word.
It was true—from their fake marriage until now, this Long Peiye seemed… genuinely obedient to her.
Yet, the moment she remembered his identity as a “battalion commander,” an inexplicable discomfort tightened in her chest.
Xu Xiangsi’s background had instilled in her an innate wariness and aversion toward officials in uniform.
But then she reconsidered.
Wait—she had transmigrated. The current Xu Xiangsi was a law-abiding citizen.
Yet, upon further reflection about her current family background… it wasn’t exactly spotless either.
Still, deep down, she believed she was a good person!
At least, that’s what she told herself.
With that thought, the inexplicable knot in her heart loosened considerably.
However, she remained extremely, extremely displeased with Long Peiye’s deliberate concealment!
“Then why didn’t you explain it clearly earlier?”She puffed her cheeks, questioning indignantly.”
Long Peiye watched her pouting expression, the amusement in his eyes deepening, though his tone remained calm. “You never asked.”
“That’s not the point!” Xu Xiangsi felt her blood pressure rising again. “Shouldn’t you have corrected me immediately, right on the spot, when I first mistook your identity?!”
How could he be so nonchalant about it!
Seeing her genuinely ruffled, Long Peiye reined in his teasing and adopted a more serious demeanor.
“You’re right,” he nodded, his admission of fault surprisingly sincere. “It was my mistake. I apologize, and it won’t happen again.”
He paused, his voice softening as he explained, “It’s just that at the time, when I heard your name was Xu Xiangsi, I… was taken aback. Later, when I learned you needed help, I thought it wasn’t a big deal and agreed directly.”
His gaze settled on her face, profound and searching, carrying a complexity she couldn’t decipher.
“You don’t remember me?” he asked softly, his voice low.
Xu Xiangsi’s heart skipped a beat!
A sense of foreboding shot from the soles of her feet to the crown of her head!
Oh no, oh no!
Her inner self wailed in despair: Could the original host have left behind some romantic entanglement?!
Noticing her instantly terrified expression, Long Peiye was momentarily taken aback, then seemed to understand, a trace of resigned amusement flickering in his eyes.
He spoke slowly, his voice tinged with distant recollection. “When I was a child, I was fooling around and fell into a river, even though I couldn’t swim. It was you, passing by, who found a long bamboo pole and pulled me out of the water. You… have forgotten all about it?”
Xu Xiangsi frantically sifted through the blurred fragments of the “original host’s” memories.
It seemed… there was such an incident.
She vaguely recalled a summer long, long ago—she had gone to the river to catch fish or something—and indeed, there was a young boy who had fallen into the water.
No one else was around at the time, and she, too, was startled, hastily grabbing a long bamboo pole to extend toward him.
The thought flashed through her mind, and Xu Xiangsi abruptly looked up, her eyes filled with shock, doubt, and a trace of absurd speculation.
She stared suspiciously at Long Peiye, as if trying to detect some flaw in his handsome face.
“Wait a minute! You mean…”
Xu Xiangsi’s voice rose slightly, carrying a speculation that even she found unbelievable: “Could it be… I saved you when we were kids, so you fell in love with me at first sight—no, I mean, you’ve never forgotten me, seeing me as the White Moonlight, the cinnabar mole of your life?”
“And then, when you finally got the chance to meet me again, the gratitude for saving your life combined with your pure love for your White Moonlight made you so overwhelmed that you couldn’t wait to decide to marry me?!”
The more she spoke, the more she felt this plot development resembled those melodramatic novels she used to read!
Hearing this, several large question marks clearly surfaced in Long Peiye’s deep eyes.
He frowned slightly, his expression as if he had just heard some far-fetched fantasy.
“Comrade Xu Xiangsi,” he paused, his tone somewhat helpless, “what on earth are you thinking about all day long in that head of yours?”
“How old was I back then? Not even ten years old.”
Long Peiye shook his head, caught between laughter and tears. “What child under ten would understand anything about love? I admit, I did want to repay you for saving my life—that’s for sure.”
His expression turned more serious. “But it has nothing to do with… what you called White Moonlight or love.”
Xu Xiangsi had been anxiously worrying that she might have accidentally stolen the destined romance of the original owner, only to find out it was a misunderstanding.
Hearing his words, her unsettled heart instantly eased.
But immediately, new doubts arose.
She looked up again, her beautiful almond-shaped eyes filled with disbelief. “Then why did you agree to marry me? Apart from this incident, we have no other emotional foundation!”
She counted on her fingers, and the more she counted, the more something felt off.
Seeing her stubborn insistence on getting to the bottom of things, Long Peiye couldn’t help but let out a light laugh, then casually shrugged.
“Didn’t I tell you on the first day we met, at the state-run restaurant?” His tone was relaxed, as if discussing the most ordinary matter. “My family has been pressuring me to get married, and they’re quite insistent.”
Xu Xiangsi’s face instantly darkened.
She gritted her teeth, her voice carrying a suppressed anger. “So… it’s just for such a simple reason?”
She had thought there would be some earth-shattering, deeply moving justification!
Turns out, in his eyes, she really was just a tool to deal with his family’s marriage pressure?
And here she thought Long Peiye had some White Moonlight complex after hearing about their past…
Long Peiye watched her fuming, visibly angry but not daring to speak out, her cheeks puffed up, and the smile on his lips deepened.
“Yeah,” he nodded, his tone still casual. “Many things in this world are actually that simple.”
He seemed unwilling to dwell on the topic any longer and turned his gaze toward the courtyard.
“Alright,” he gently nudged Xu Xiangsi’s shoulder, signaling her to go inside. “Let’s go in and take a look first. Why don’t you carefully inspect whether there’s anything unsatisfactory or missing in our future home?”
Long Peiye’s voice softened slightly: “That way I can make other preparations and get everything furnished as soon as possible.”
Xu Xiangsi had originally been holding back a bellyful of anger, ready to thoroughly confront him about his deliberate concealment of his identity.
But upon hearing the words “home” and “furnish things,” her attention was successfully diverted.
After all, this was where she would be living for several years to come – she couldn’t afford to be careless!
She stepped into the courtyard.
The courtyard was indeed quite spacious, with cleanly swept cement flooring and a few half-withered crabapple trees planted in the corners.
“Hmm, not bad.” Xu Xiangsi nodded. At least it was much better than the desolate military family compound she had imagined.
