Chapter 109: This Guy, Really!

The courtyard suddenly fell silent, leaving only the rustling sound of wind passing through the fence.

But Xu Xiangsi didn’t let Long Peiye rest. She suddenly grabbed his arm, her almond-shaped eyes sparkling as if she had discovered some new continent.

“Wait!”

“Come take a look with me quickly!”

Without waiting for his response, she dragged Long Peiye to the fence wall in the corner of the courtyard.

Xu Xiangsi pointed at the patch of dark soil, her voice filled with barely contained excitement.

“Look! The seeds you scattered have sprouted!”

Long Peiye followed her finger and saw that indeed, several tender, barely visible green dots had emerged from the moist soil.

Xu Xiangsi crouched down, leaning in very close as if studying some rare treasure.

“I’ve been studying this for quite a while, going through all the Herbal Compendium in my mind, but I just can’t figure out what this is.”

She lifted her head, her face clearly written with “curiosity” and “tell me quickly,” gazing at him eagerly.

“Hurry up and tell me, what exactly is this?”

Seeing her like this, a faint trace of amusement flickered in Long Peiye’s eyes, but he deliberately didn’t give her what she wanted.

“No rush,” he said leisurely, his tone carrying a hint of deliberate mystery.

“You’ll know when the leaves grow a bit bigger.”

“You!” Seeing that he simply refused to tell her, Xu Xiangsi couldn’t help but puff up her cheeks angrily and roll her eyes at him dramatically.

This guy, really!

But Long Peiye seemed to have eyes in the back of his head, as the curve of his mouth deepened slightly.

He paid no more attention to the fuming Xu Xiangsi, turned around and fetched another small hoe from under the eaves.

Then, under her “resentful” gaze, he began unhurriedly tending to his two precious vegetable plots.

Xu Xiangsi glared at his broad back, grinding her molars.

This guy was such a silent gourd, and a silent gourd who loved keeping people in suspense at that!

Her gaze shifted from him to another vegetable plot of the same size nearby.

That plot also showed specks of green, looking much denser than the few mysterious sprouts by the fence.

Only…

She leaned in to take a closer look, her small nose wrinkling slightly before she pursed her lips.

They were just the most common sprouts of cabbage, radish, and chives.

She could recognize these things with her eyes closed—there was no challenge at all.

So boring.

Xu Xiangsi’s interest instantly vanished completely, and she remembered something else.

Last time, Li Hong was kicked flying by Long Peiye and landed straight in this vegetable plot, creating a large crater on impact.

She remembered how Long Peiye had looked at that crater afterward, his brows furrowed so deeply they could crush a fly, and he had let out a pained hiss.

The next day, she saw him with his small hoe, huffing and puffing as he turned over that patch of soil again and specifically reseeded it.

Thinking of this, Xu Xiangsi couldn’t help but let out a light hum and said quietly, “When I wasn’t here, this land lay fallow for so long, and I never saw you lift a single hoe.”

Long Peiye’s hoeing movements abruptly stopped.

He slowly straightened up, turned his head, and his deep black eyes looked directly at her.

That gaze was heavy, carrying an indescribable, inexplicable meaning.

Xu Xiangsi felt her heart inexplicably skip a beat under his stare.

Then, she heard his deep, magnetic voice drift over clearly, word by word.

“That depends on who the vegetables are being grown for.”

_Boom—_

Xu Xiangsi felt her cheeks instantly ignite, a wave of heat rushing straight to the top of her head.

Something seemed to hit her chest—not too hard, not too light.

It left her feeling both numb and itchy.

She opened her mouth, but her throat felt clogged with cotton, unable to utter a single word.

She could only watch helplessly as the man curled his lips into a faint, almost imperceptible smile, then turned around as if nothing had happened and went back to tending his vegetable patch.

Xu Xiangsi stood frozen in place for a long while before she finally stamped her foot, turned, and ran back into the house.

…

By dinnertime, the heat on Xu Xiangsi’s face had finally subsided completely.

Picking at the rice in her bowl, she suddenly spoke up as if remembering something.

“By the way, tomorrow’s another day we can go to Yue Lin City.”

“I plan to go again.”

Long Peiye, who had been in the middle of picking up food with his chopsticks, abruptly paused.

He looked up at her, somewhat surprised.

“You still haven’t given up?”

The moment those words left his mouth, Xu Xiangsi’s eyes widened instantly, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

“What do you mean, ‘I still haven’t given up’?”

“What’s wrong with me going to Yue Lin City to stroll around and buy a few things?!”

Her voice suddenly rose sharply, carrying a hint of defensiveness and wariness that she herself hadn’t noticed.

Long Peiye immediately realized he had said the wrong thing.

He quickly set down his chopsticks, his face instantly breaking into an apologetic smile, his tone as gentle as could be.

“No problem, of course there’s no problem.”

“What I meant was, you’re free to go if you want,” he raised his hands in a gesture of surrender, “absolutely no issue at all.”

Only then did Xu Xiangsi retract her sharp glare, lowering her head and letting out a heavy “hmph.”

Long Peiye looked at her pouting profile and smiled helplessly, though a trace of deep thought flickered in his eyes.

He saw the situation clearly in his heart.

All that talk about strolling around and buying things—it was just an excuse.

This girl still held in her heart the worry for her grandfather and uncles, who had been sent down to Storm Island.

She just wouldn’t give up, still hoping to go to Yue Lin City to try her luck, to see if she could find a boat heading to Storm Island.

The next day, as dawn barely broke and the world was still bathed in a grayish-blue hue, the aroma of rice porridge and the soft clinking of a spatula against a pot could already be heard from the kitchen.

Long Peiye had simmered a pot of Seafood Porridge until it was fragrant and creamy, and he had also pan-fried several savory Scallion Pancakes, arranging them neatly on a plate.

After finishing all this, he wiped his hands, and his tall figure moved to the front of Xu Xiangsi’s door.

He raised his hand and gently knocked on her door.

“Xiangsi, time to get up.”

“After breakfast, I’ll take you to the pier.”

The door creaked open.

Behind it, a small, tousled head peeked out.

Xu Xiangsi had clearly just been woken up; her beautiful almond-shaped eyes still carried a trace of sleepiness as she gazed at him in confusion.

Her hair was a mess, like a little bird’s nest, with a few unruly strands sticking up and swaying slightly with her movement.

She looked utterly dazed and innocent, like a little kitten that had just woken up.

Long Peiye’s heart instantly melted into a puddle.

He instinctively raised his hand, his fingertips itching intensely as a strong urge surged within him—to ruffle her messy hair or pinch her chubby, baby-faced cheeks.

Yet, halfway through the motion, he abruptly stopped himself.

He remembered how this girl would bristle like a provoked cat, baring her teeth and ready to scratch at any moment.

Forget it.
